I would go for KDE and Gnome as the main choices. Then XFCE and Fluxbox for 
the lighter WM options. Those are the most widely used for a reason ;)
Xpde - why would we want to look like an inferior OS?  Just my view of 
course ;)  Yes, it looks neat - but if people want XP, then they can dual 
boot with XP. You can customise KDE to resemble XP if you really must - to a 
degree anyway. KDE is miles neater than XP in my view - I am perhaps used to 
KDE so my view is slanted. XP is a confusing mess to me! I cannot use it or 
find anything on it - luckily I only ever see XP on repair jobs for other 
people.
