This could be a result of flagged messages.

Slow switching to the Calendar.

Possible culprit: flagged messages (flagged messages are now considered a
type of "to-do", by the way.) One user reports, At one point I had about
2000, and would get stuck for 5-6 minutes. I unflagged most of them, but I
still have a couple hundred, They now slow me down to about 30 seconds
switching to calendar and then flagging messages.

Yes, especially in Time Machine recovered database files.

If you export then select to delete after exporting then import back this
can clear up the issue. However, with Exchange it's generally fixed by
creating a new Identity. This is why I'm thinking something else like
flagged messages could be part of the process.
