My point is if we keep head as 3.2.x branch any additions will become API on the next minor release, which happen quite often. Having a real head branch allows us to further refine these new APIs to a level we are sure we can live with them for quite some time.

Getting the return value types right is not always that easy on first sight and they are in fact main point of criticism for the current API. So having some more time to tweak the new ones could help.
