Ah, OK.
Extending that to its logical conclusion, it sounds like there's a need
for a yum-options plugin that surfaces all the configuration directives
available in yum.conf. And I think I'll give that a miss for now!

It now works with multiple, comma-separated values, e.g.:
yum groupinstall --group-package-types=mandatory,optional ruby
