As with all things Frank, I think your answer lies in "all of the
above"...
Was FZ saying the Panther LP's were inferior to take a stab at WB?
Probably.
Were those LP's "sonically inferior" in his estimation? Well, have you ever
known FZ not to fuck around with a recording (for the advancement of his
Project/Object) to make it "better" - think "The Old Masters" boxes
here...
Were the LP's actually "sonically inferior" to what was eventually released
on disk - 'Crislu's Brilliance'? Probably not...
If you read much of what FZ had to say about sonic reproduction, you know
that really incredible things can be done, easier now in the digital age -
create a "room", where specific sounds occur in different places, etc. And he's
right of course. But there's a caveat.
All recorded sound, in it's reproduction, is controlled by the quality of
the equipment broadcasting it; i.e. you're not going to get much dynamic range
from a boom-box. This brings the point down to it's ridiculous roots, but the
point is valid. I'd wager the sound system that FZ listened to was a tad sight
better than mine... And I do have better than a boom-box. To my ears, I don't
hear an incredible sonic difference from my WB LP's and my Lather disks...
Checking this all out for yourself was work? Boring work?
"Say buddy, you need a hobby."
