Mike,
Howdy, again.
"Koolaid" makes me chuckle; years since I heard the word.
(Nah, switched to the bubbly long ago, here, BTW). ;-)
But I must say, though, my first two teachers, at least via their writings,
were Hindu:
Swami Muktananda;
Sri Ramana Maharshi (his practice was more like zen sitting);
then, The Sufi Order in the West (of Hazrat Inayat Khan);
then, years of intensive Hatha Yoga practice, with some sitting;
then, Ch'an Master Sheng Yen (Ch'an sitting, and physical practices).
A few other Zen teachers also, via short or long visitations, but with minor
involvement compared with my main teacher, Shifu Sheng Yen (deceased):
Maezumi Roshi (deceased);
Bernie Glassman Roshi;
John Daido Loori Roshi (deceased);
Robert Aitken Roshi (deceased);
Pat Hawk Roshi (deceased).
Strong practice!,
