Mike, well we're Dharma brothers, then.
Pat Hawk Roshi passed away a month ago. He had been the guiding teacher of the
sangha here since about 1988, and had been living in Tucson since about 1995.
His memorial service is in four days.
After many years I left that sangha to devote myself to founding a new group
centered on mostly the ways of Sheng Yen, but not exclusively (however, mostly
on Chinese teachers and teachings). I am not Chinese, but those original
teachings and ways are the ones that influenced me most, and the ones I feel at
home with. I especially respect Sheng Yen's way of including physical practice
as part of our communal practice, even (or especially) on lengthy retreat.
I might know your teacher, as over the years we've had many visits from other
teachers in the Diamond Sangha Teacher's Circle, and they had their big
periodic meeting here a few years ago. Maybe we've even sat (If you like, let
me know who that is. And what part of the world?).
