Thats why it's convenient to have a good monitoring system. (most use snmp to
check for error logs etc etc)
So even tho they ping back and everything else --> if there's a program error
you can get notified (same as warnings and alike).

Basically nagios and zenoss are both very capable monitoring systems - and with
4+ servers it's defenatly worth obtaining such a monitoring system.
(i'm guessing you got mail on ur mobile.. so just make it mail you on errors
and warnings --> then no matter where you are you will always be informed)

If you work in a team you can also set to inform on "cleared" (basically
problem solved) so on and so on..
monitors generally do not need high spec's.. (tho some recommend 4+ gb they run
stable with far less)

Regards,
Marco

Hi Nick,

I use nagios on a separate box, that I also use as my main access point to the
server farm (It use it as a "controller" workstation for awstats, nagios,
backup, update to the server web apps, etc)

very true point, the boxes can show all signs of "life", but something
unforseen or "mesaureable" has happened, can really turn your day ugly.
