Yes, zenagios captures stderr.
Run zenagios in debug mode:
$ zenagios run -v 10
This will give you a better idea of what is going on.
Make sure that the path to your zenagios plugins is set properly. The
default is /usr/local/nagios/libexec. If you are using the 0.22.3
VMWare image you need to set this to /usr/libexec. Select Devices ->
zProperties, modify zNagiosPath.

Gary, for general Nagios plugin clarification: if you give a bogus
address, the tool fails on a DNS lookup (exit code 2) and prints and
error message to stderr. If you give it a resolvable address, you will
get status written to stdout.
Eric, does Zenoss-Nagios code capture stderr? Do you think it should?
