Alright it looks like my plan worked.
I created a 16 GB drive in VMWare, mounted it at some generic location,
copied /srv/mysql onto it and then re mounted it on /srv/mysql. So far,
no space problems and all seems mostly right with the world.
The next thing I would like to try (since this VM server is installed on
the same physical server as the original installed-from-source Zenoss
instance that collected a good bit of data over its few of months in
operation) is to create a drive in VMWare that maps to a physical
partition (/var/lib/mysql) on the host machine. I will then mount that
drive in place of /srv/mysql on the virtual machine.
This should give me all of the data from the old system without any of
the broken install.
Does this sound like a big mistake? Should I just spend my time working
on upgrading / fixing the physical install?

Thanks;
James
