My apologies bdearlove, I misread your original post. I've also gotten network weathermap working using the zenoss rrds :)
I used the weathermap4rrd port (http://weathermap4rrd.tropicalex.net/changelog.php). Set up a 5 minute cronjob and exports to a png. Works great! Now all I need is a portlet... I was thinking I would hack together a portlet that just displayed an image file... that can't be too difficult, even for a scripting noob hack like myself.
