I have been looking into some monitoring solutions, I like the look of Zenoss, but am wondering if it will work for my needs. Everything I read talks about using Zenoss for 10-1000 devices.
I need to monitor approximately 6000 devices. I really only need 'ping' type monitoring on about 5000 of them that are running Windows XP. The other 1000 are running 2003 Server R2 on Dell servers and I could see a need to monitor more in depth information. These devices are spread across approximately 300 locations which are connected via a private WAN. The connections are about 400 Kbs to the locations. Would a single server be able to handle this kind of load? Is SNMP the only way to populate devices aside from doing it in a manual fashion? If I have another product with a database of all known devices, could I use that data to populate the list of manageable items? Any info would be appreciated.
