This is a work-around to deal with several known issues related to
layer-3 awareness in daemons still sending alerts even though a device
has been marked as down. There are several tickets opened related to
this and they're being addressed, but the device event suppression
works in the meantime. The other tip also works around if your
network topology is not understood by Zenoss or you wish to introduce
new layers of suppression to events not related to network topology.
Both tips were meant as reference points for customizing your own
event rules, as a commenter on the blog post noted they change the
severity instead of suppressing when certain devices are down.

Thanks,
Matt Ray
