VIJAYAWADA: The ruling Congress is facing an embarrassing situation due to
mishandling of sensitive issues by officials in politically conscious Krishna
and Guntur districts just before the civic polls.
In Krishna district, the Dalit farmer’s suicide issue was mishandled by local
revenue officials and led to a law and order problem. A police official’s
outbursts against former TDP minister Kodela Sivaprasad Rao led to a
controversy in Guntur district.
In both the cases, the main Opposition Telugu Desam got an issue in the
elections. Dalit farmer K Moshe’s suicide in Higher Education Minister
Pinnamaneni Venkateswara Rao’s constituency Mudinepalli just before the
starting of Government’s II phase land distribution programme at Gudivada has
led to a controversy causing a law and order problem in the district.
Moshe purchased 20 cents land in 1980 and he was paying cess since then in his
village Pedapalaparru.
But due to mischief committed by village secretary and mandal revenue officer
the land was proposed to distribute to someone else on August 23. Following
this, Moshe committed suicide.
Exploiting the situation, Gudivada MLA K.Venkateswara Rao alias Nani resorted
to agitation in front of Gudivada RDO office to expose the ruling party.
Ministers JC Diwakara Reddy and Venkateswara Rao, however, settled the issue by
ordering compensation to the victim’s kin. But the DSP’s overenthusiasm to
prevent the MLA from entering the town with the body led to tension.
Diwakara Reddy tried to defuse the situation by accepting the mistake of
revenue officials.
But the police registered as many as seven criminal cases against the MLA and
over 50 TDP workers with non-bailable sections which provoked the TDP
activists. District TDP secretary and Nandingama MLA D Umamaheswara Rao said
“the incident exposed that the Government’s lack of control over
administration.”
In Guntur district, police officer Bh Prudhvinarayana’s outburst against former
TDP’s home minister Kodela Siva Prasada Rao has led to tension in the
faction-ridden Narasaraopet region.
The police official have reportedly said that cases pending against the Kodela
were sufficient enough to open a ‘rowdy-sheet’ against the former minister.
However, this incident came in handy for Kodela. His arch political rivals in
the district TDP and former ministers Dr M Pedarathaiah and Alapati Rajendra
Prasad forgetting their differences came to his resuce.
Diwakar Reddy tried to defuse the situation by accepting the mistake of revenue
officials. But the police registered seven criminal cases against the MLA.
