'Wrong accounts to blame for delay'

TNN, Jun 27, 2010, 05.41am IST

HYDERABAD: State ministers on Saturday called upon the political
parties not to play with the careers of 30 lakh students for the sake
of narrow political gains.

At a press conference, minister for social welfare P Subhash Chandra
Bose, BC welfare minister M Mukesh Goud, panchayat raj minister B
Satyanarayana, irrigation minister P Lakshmaiah and law minister M
Venkataramana Rao said that the government had already released Rs 522
crore towards scholarship and the fee reimbursement scheme and it
would be deposited in the bank accounts of the students in two weeks
time. They said another Rs 500 crore would be released soon.

Panchayat raj minister Satyanarayana criticised the opposition parties
for raising a hue and cry over the scholarship issue. He alleged that
the opposition parties, particularly the TDP, was trying to gain
political mileage out of it. He alleged that the TDP had given its
support to BC leader R Krishnaiah only for that purpose. The ministers
claimed that the main reason for the delay in the fee reimbursement of
the BC students was due to the invalid bank accounts. Of 22,79,671
students eligible for scholarship, only 13,23,286 had valid bank
accounts.

Giving bank-wise break up, Subhash Chandra Bose said that of the total
9,56,385 invalid bank accounts over 3.97 lakh were in SBH, 3.45 lakh
in Andhra Bank, 1.02 lakh in Syndicate Bank and over 11,000 in Indian
Bank. “The students did not follow the guidelines and opened the
accounts in the name of their family members and friends,” the
minister added. He said that the government would soon release
advertisements containing the guidelines for the students. Soon there
would be a simplified online system for smooth transfer of fee
reimbursement money to the bank accounts, he said.
