Introduction

Services constitute of numerous and heterogeneous activities. Today 
services have surpassed sectors such as Agriculture to become prime 
contributor amounting to 51% to India's GDP. Services cover wide 
range of activities such as management, banking, insurance, 
hospitality, administration, communication, entertainment, wholesale 
distribution, engineering services as well as Research & Development 
activities and many more. As Service sector is fast becoming the 
imperative component of the Indian economy, the development of 
service sector would lead to advancement of the economy.

For promoting services within India, it is imperative to understand 
the taxation dynamics in the country and address the open-ended 
issues. In this scenario, service tax is an important component of 
Government earnings. As an important component of Government 
earnings, services must be given attention. Currently, there are 85 
services that are covered under Service tax.
 

Objective

The conference would bring government & industry at a common platform 
to address the critical issues faced by them and thereby streamline & 
simplify the structure & rules of service tax, in order to strengthen 
the service tax administration. We have partnered with 
PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) who would bring in their domain 
expertise in this area.

The conference would highlight the following: 

� The importance of service tax levied by the Government.

� The Impact of imposing service tax of 10.2% on the service 
providers.

� New services covered under Service Tax and extension of the scope 
of certain existing services after the Budget.

� Need to resolve misinterpretation, disputes & litigation due to 
Service Tax on selected services.

� List out policy imperatives, and get senior representatives from 
the government to answer questions raised by delegates.

� Discuss the challenges before the service tax administration.

� Impact of service tax on the consumers (especially the Middle class)

� To devise a structure to streamline the structure and rules of 
service tax.

� Define a roadmap for the implementation of Service Tax.

scope of 12 of the existing services has been widened in coverage.

o         Rationalization of duty structures, simplification of tax 
procedures and strengthening of the tax administration.

 

�        Session I: Industry wise impact of Service Tax in 
                   Industry:  Issues & Recommendations 

This session would focus on the impact of the service tax on various 
sectors like Telecom Services, Banking & Financial services, 
Construction services and Manufacturing and the leaders from the 
respective sectors would present their views on the impact of Service 
Tax on their industry and thereby provide recommendations to 
streamline & simplify the structure and rules of Service Tax.
