As someone pointed out much has been said about the Indian "middle class". Most of what has been written has been done so with the "market" in mind and I think it is information and insight that is good to know- even if it is to acknowledge ourselves and the way we lead our own lives. But having said that, it is also to be said that most of what is written is either gung ho about India and how this population is driving India to the echelons of economic super-stardom and the like. Much of the press is international and again driven by the "corporate" considerations. As an Indian and as a middle class Indian, I dont think I want to say the government has to alleviate the poor and leave it at that. I think we elect our government and we are responsible for the structure of our society and if we can claim to be the segment with the power to make a change, we also should acknowledge that we are frightfully irresponsible in this regard. In more ways than one, much of India's middle class today has the means to bypass the system and hence contributes significantly to the degeneration of India. It is this middle class that is becoming increasingly disengaged with governance and fosters the same with the younger generation through example. I strongly believe it is the middle class with its education and considerably higher resources who can and who should contribute to improving our living space and our lives. The next time we find an article as the one I am responding to , or one that speaks of Utopian times ahead, we the middle class should be worried as to what are we doing that shouldn't hinder that dream. And yes, I dont speak from a soap box or a platform, I am genuinely concerned.
