GATE
I want to call all of you home.
Yes, you must come
all of you all
makes it so difficult today
perhaps next semester if you can.
Next semester came but she didn't
want us over. Said her brother
had come down from the U.S
so we avoided.
Then she said she had changed house
an independent house with a gate.
They had to paint the old gate
but the blemish stood out.
So I will call you over when the paint
is evenly done, she proffered.
We began to wonder if there was a house
a new one and if it did have a gate.
I thought of this gate that shut us out
painted or unpainted that hardly
opened into the sesame block.
It is either she wants us, or wants us not.
Wonder whether it is she or the gate
that cringes at our footsteps!
