Disks in the 2540 are expensive. The hot spare does not need to be in the 2540. You also use a suitably large disk (1TB) installed in your server as the hot spare. This assumes that disks in the server are cheaper than in the 2540. With this approach you can then use all 12 disks in your 2540 and configure them as two raidz2 vdevs in one pool.
