When it comes to dumping and restoring filesystems, there is still no official replacement for the ufsdump and ufsrestore. The discussion has been had before, but to my knowledge, there is no consensus on the best method for backing up zfs filesystems. Personally, I like to use variations on zfs send and zfs receive, but others will tell a different story. Still, don't let this put you off using zfs as the root filesystem.
