The general answer is "if it ain't broken, don't fix it". See http://www.solarisinternals.com/wiki/index.php/ZFS_Troubleshooting_Guide#Complete_Solaris_ZFS_Root_Pool_Recovery for example of bare metal rpool recovery example using nfs + zfs send/receive.
