So we have tracked it down now!

And the winner (or better culprit) is ...

... the scanner.o kernel module!

Yes, your device stopped working as soon as you loaded the scanner module. As
you unloaded it, scanning worked again. The problem of printing still not
working in that moment is a problem of the CUPS architecture: If you send a
print job to CUPS and the printer is somehow not reachable (in your case when
the scanner module was loaded) CUPS stops the print queue (but does not remove
it). You can recognize stopped queues in /etc/cups/printers.conf. When you fix
the printer (in your case by unloading the scanner module) CUPS does not take
note of it. You must restart the stopped queue manually, either by running the
command

   /usr/bin/enable <queue name>

as root, by entering the web interface of CUPS (http://localhost:631/) with a
browser, choose "Printer Management", and click on the green "Start Printer"
button of your printer's entry. You will be asked for a login and a password,
use root and the root password here. In printerdrake you can re-enable a printer
by clicking on the "Edit" button, choosing "Printer options" and in the options
dialog simply clicking OK (option changes are not needed for this).

So the remaining bug is to make the scanner module not claiming the HP PSC 1xxx
multi-function devices. Nicolas is working on this.

description:
I just added a HP PSC 1210 muti-funtion printer to my system. Every time I run
printerdrake, it adds another instance of that model to the list of printers.
So if I run it three times, I get a list of three HP PSC 1210's connected to my
system.
