2002-01-09 Thread Sotonyi Attila

Hi,

Try to go through these steps, I think it will help.

ANR8840E Unable to open device device name with error error number.

Explanation: The library was inaccessible, thus causing a open request to
fail. This will inturn cause the pending request to fail.

System Action: A drive is marked inaccessible and the server starts polling
the drive to determine if the library and drive are inaccessable. In most
case, the libary had a temporary failure and recovers. When the server
determines that the library is available, the drive will be brought back
online.

User Response: Verify the library is online. Verify cable connections
between the library and the server. If the problem persists contact your
service representative.

 Hi all,

 We have a -:
3584 Fibre attached library with 3 LTO drives in it.
TSM server is NT4 SP6a, TSM Version 4.2.1.6.
Server has been running for three weeks at this level

The server crashed today with Dr Watson error.
Library and Server were shut down and restarted.

The library has come up and all tape drives / diagnostics run fine.
The Server has come up and it can see the Library and Tape drives from operating
system level.

Q drive and Q server respond saying drives and library are online.

Sessions are connecting to the server, I can do incremental database backups etc..

When I try to do a check out / or check in of a tape (or load on into tape drive) I
get error -:

ANR8840E Unable to open device LB1.1.0.3 with error -1
 ANR8826E No Entry/Exit found on library LB1.1.0.3

Basically - Server can not send commands to tape library.

Has anybody run across this problem before, have any helpful hints ?

Thanks for any ideas you have.

backup to disk stg vs tape stg.

Title: ssignetscape

Hi All,

I am running TSM 4.1 on aix server and DLT scallar 1000 library.
I have a critical client that I would like to backup directly to the tape
stgpool.
The performance in that method are 8M/S network and 70K/S aggregated transfer
rate.
I would like to improve that performance to be at list 3M/S aggregated.
I tried to work with the following performance parameters.

SELFTUNETXNSIZE
SELFTUNEBUFPOOLSIZE

but with no success.

I tried to backup the same client to a disk storage pool and the aggregated
ware something like 4M/S.
it's look like a performance problem but I don't know what parameter to change.

Thanksin advance.

Re: Client Compression question

2002-01-09 Thread Michael Bartl

Hi Kelly,
you're right. In todays networks client compression doesn't make too
much sense.

When we did backups within a 4 mbit TR LAN (and also later with 16mbit
TR) we really got an improvement using client compression. Today with at
least 100 mbit client compression is near useless, it just saves some
space in your disk storage pools.
For mobile users that use 64kbit lines to backup you won't want to miss
client compression...

 Hi.

I have been testing Novell backups and restores using a Compaq proliant 8500 as
 the client
 box.
We have been seeing ok performance of approx 10 gb an hour for backups and
 restores,
 of 1 million objects.
This applies both to Netware compressed and Netware uncompressed volumes.
However when I try TSM client compression on a backup of a netware uncompressed
volume, the performance drops to 1 gb. an hour.
It is not a resource problem the compaq cpu is hardly stirring, but it is
definitely the TSM compression that is taking up the time (TSM tracing shows it
as 89% of the total time)
I always believed in the past that slow performance with client compression was
 down to
lack of cpu on the client box, but there is cpu to spare with this
 configuration.
 My question is :-
Is 1 gb an hour the best performance I that I can expect using TSM compression
or can anyone think of reasons why that is all I am achieving ?

 thanks

Currently i have problems to backup a fileserver with many large pst files

The incremental has to save nearly 25% of the whole data every night over a

Does anyone has experience doing subfilebackup for fileservers?

There're additional parameters which you should try first:

In your client dsm.sys file set these parameters with their values:

Tcpbuffsize
Tcpwindowsize
Tcpnodelay
Largecommbuffers
Txnbytelimit

If it's not help, then you have to check the AIX network parameters

We are using client compression for backup of a 1,5 TByte NAS system.(F760)
(reason is to have apparently larger disk storage pools)
Backup is done using 5 different nodes on the same machine (Dual 1 GHz P3)
to have the opportiunity to restore with 5 sessions.
During backup i can see about 3-4 MByte per second on the network to the
TSM-server on MVS.
Restoretests for the netapp system seem to have a limit with this compressed
data at 8-9 MB per second. (only if tapes 3590-B a filled well)
At this speed (can be observed over a longer period) TSM client and NAS
system have nearly 100% CPU load.
The data a typical userdata - many small and some large

You can connect a library on a SCSI bus between the two systems and share
the library the same way as you would in a SAN. I've never tried it
between
Solaris and Windows, but it should work fine as long as the controllers
don't interfere with each other electrically (they will typically be
different brands).

The controllers must have different SCSI target addresses - I usually use
the default of 7 on one and 6 on the other.

If you just want to get some experience with shared libraries within TSM,
the simplest method is to create a second TSM server instance on the same
system. Then you can define a shared library between the two. I use this
method for training classes.

Re: library sharing without SAN

2002-01-09 Thread Bill Smoldt

No special support with all the SCSI adapters that I've dealt with - mostly
Adaptec and QLogic. The hardware has been capable of this for years and
I've used this on many OpenVMS clusters and NT clusters. The initiators
don't talk to each other, and the devices have to be capable of doing a SCSI
disconnect. All arbitration and locking for the robot and drives takes
place in the TSM Server.

Might ease your library movement, but I've never tried crossing the data
tapes between platforms. It's certainly unsupported so you'd want to
rewrite the tapes even if it worked. Is that what you're thinking?

Subject: DIRMC

I am still not clear where or when the use of DIRMC may have changed from what I
understood from the red book Getting Started with TSM. In the red book example, a
separate management class pointed to by DIRMC in dsmopt of the client was created to
send directory structures to a disk storage pool. This would allow rapid restoration
of the directory structures during recovery. During testing, I discovered (Win2K
server and Win2K client TSM 4.1):

1. Even if you use DIRMC to define the management class of directories, the
directories would still default to the management class with the highest retention
value. Only after coding NOLIMIT on the management class pointed to by DIRMC, did the
directories get bond to the management class coded for DIRMC.

2. After the directories where bonded to the correct management class ( a MC that had
a backup copy group with a destination of a disk storage pool defined exclusively for
my directories), I discovered that the directories did not go to that storage pool.

3. I discovered that it did not matter what MC the directories where bond to. The
directory structures are saved in the TSM data base.

So, can anyone enlighten me on when this change occurred? The red book obviously does
not indicate this behavior for the management of directory structures. Am I missing
something here? Are there any considerations for TSM DB sizing because the directory
structures are stored in the DB? Where is this documented?

Thanks for your input,
Al

Re: library sharing without SAN

2002-01-09 Thread Bill Smoldt

You can connect a library on a SCSI bus between the two systems and share
the library the same way as you would in a SAN. I've never tried it between
Solaris and Windows, but it should work fine as long as the controllers
don't interfere with each other electrically (they will typically be
different brands).

Can you please specify clearly what are the problems, incompatibilities,

If non-support from the vendor, lack of system object and unicode
support, as well as lack of newer server features such as backupsets,
subfile differencing and journaling are not issues of importance for
you, I have seen no problem (using client v3.1.0.8 or 4.2.1.18) on a
V3.1 server. I do however wish for a summary table and a serviceable

If you mean V3.1 client, then I'd be less positive (that was
positive?). The V4.2.1.18 client scheduler seems more reliable (the
V3.1 scheduler was prone to permanent sleep when the network blipped or
backup server was restarted) and many find the restore functions easier
to use than with the older client.

(We're not a big Windows client user, but have a few servers and a few

Hi All,

We are recently beginning to backup some Linux boxes, and have run
into the limitation whereby the EXT3 filesystems are not supported by TSM
V4.2. The doc claims that they can be backed up in compatibility mode,
but it does not explain how to accomplish this. Does anyone here know how
to backup these filesystems? Here is what they look like in /etc/fstab:

LABEL=//   ext3defaults1 1
LABEL=/boot/boot   ext3defaults1 2
LABEL=/boot2   /boot2  ext3defaults1 2
LABEL=/root2   /root2  ext3defaults1 2

And of course, the followup question to Tivoli, if they are listening, is
if support for ext3 is planned? For now, it would be nice to enable
backups of these filesystems in this so called compatibility mode.

Re: library sharing without SAN

2002-01-09 Thread Robin Sharpe

Now that I think about it, I'm not sure what advantage we would gain, if
any. Our goal is to eventually move the P3000 and f50 to another location
anyway.
Wait a minute, I just thought of a benefit... the reason we got the new
library was because we overflowed the old one. It's still a problem
juggling tapes just to do reclaims on the old system.

Anyway, I was just curious how it would all work... I didn't think you
could define SCSI libraries to TSM as SHARED (or don't you have to?). How
do you physically cable it? Just replace the SCSI terminator(s) with a
cable(s) to the other system?

I guess I would want to something like this (please excuse rudimentory
non-graphics):

HP L2000 (TSM2) -scsi- HP 20/700 -scsi IBM F50
(TSM1) -scsi- ATL P3000

Then I would want to check some tapes into the 20/700 to allow TSM1 to do
reclaims. 20/700 has 553 available slots; P3000 has none.

No special support with all the SCSI adapters that I've dealt with - mostly
Adaptec and QLogic. The hardware has been capable of this for years and
I've used this on many OpenVMS clusters and NT clusters. The initiators
don't talk to each other, and the devices have to be capable of doing a
SCSI
disconnect. All arbitration and locking for the robot and drives takes
place in the TSM Server.

Might ease your library movement, but I've never tried crossing the data
tapes between platforms. It's certainly unsupported so you'd want to
rewrite the tapes even if it worked. Is that what you're thinking?

Just a quick question out there for all of you. I am currently
receiving tape drive failures when trying to check in and out tapes, also
during our nightly archive. They have been increasing during the last few
months. My environment is Magstar 3570, 2 drives. I am currently running
TSM 4.1.2.0 on AIX 4.3.3. I have been cleaning the drives regularly, but

that when the drive gets the error, the drive does not reset. It could be
the tapes causing the problems, but the drives are still not resetting.
Just yesterday someone was checking in tapes and loaded the wrong one, but
the drive failed due wrong tape being mounted. Then the drive did not reset

Do as Kelly suggests...

When we moved a server out of one 3494 with 3590 B1A drives into a different
3494 with 3590 E1A drives,
basically the same sort of action...
we just
set up the new library
set the next pool of all our diskpools to nothing...
took the old storage pools and renamed them to blah_old
defined the old name storage pools again (you will use your new device
class name)
set the next pool of all our diskpools back to the proper storage pool name
and you're good to go...
we waited for a majority of the data to natrually expire out of the old
library, then set the next pool of the blah_old names to point to the
new/same/you_get_the_idea name and set the migration value down low and let
TSM move the remaining data.

was really really smooth
we just had to have both devices attached for about 6 weeks because most
data bases are archived daily with a 35 day retention...

No, I don't think you will able to do that. But you can create a new pool
in the new library, move the data or migrate it and then rename the pool
when that is done (rename stgpool). Or better yet, rename the old pool and
create the new one with the old name.

I will have to migrate all my data to the new library, but I don't want to

My current tapepool is using deviceclass 3590, what happens when I change

all diskpool migrations go to the new 3580 devices.

HELP me with DIR backup

2002-01-09 Thread Doherty, John (ANFIS)

I am currently running TSM 4.1.2.0 on an IBM ESA system. I currently have
an incremental backup schedule for a node called LDMZDC01which is backed up
daily and retained for 45 days.

I now have a further requirement to back up a web directory assoc sub-dirs
once per week of server LDMZDC01 and retain this for 6 years. I know I can
achieve this by using the command function and archiving the directory and
all sub directories to a different management class and storage pools. The
downside of this being that I will retain a full archive copy of this data
for every week for 6 years, approx. 312 copies. This would take up
considerable cartridge and/or disk space.

Does anyone know of a way to weekly incrementally backup this data? Without
impacting my daily incremental backup of the disk

The library has come up and all tape drives / diagnostics run fine.
The Server has come up and it can see the Library and Tape drives from

Q drive and Q server respond saying drives and library are online.

Sessions are connecting to the server, I can do incremental database backups

When I try to do a check out / or check in of a tape (or load on into tape

A few things to try... make sure you are at the latest TSM API.
I have seen some protocol errors caused by the TSM API level.

I have also seen this when there is no data to back up.
And if the TSM API and TDP for SQL did not change, and it
just started happening yesterday with no other system changes,
it is probably the nature of the data that is causing the problem.
Is it ALL databases or just a certain database?
What does the TDP SQL log report as a problem?

If it continues to happen, I would recommend calling IBM Service.
A TDP and API trace would help diagose the problem.

Re: Can't access TDP SQL /fileinfo metadata

2002-01-09 Thread Bill Smoldt

Del,

MOUNTWAITFORDATA is set to yes and shows so in the query.

The SQL name is correct.

We have the DESTINATION set to tapepool in preparation for SAN backups. I'm
running a test to see if going to a diskpool makes a difference, because
that's what my test servers do.

Ah, now it works. I can see the container files in the RELOCATE screen.
This is temporarily not a problem because I'll set up an include to send the
metadata to a non-migrating diskpool. Once we go to a SAN backup, is this
going to be a problem? According to the Storage Agent documentation, I
can't have a disk storage pool as a destination, but the new pool isn't a
destination for the data. Naturally, I know you thought of that and it will
work, Del.

Conclusion - with this version of TDP SQL 2.2 I must have the metadata in a
diskpool in order to RELOCATE the data during a restore. The query of the
fileinfo will fail with an ACO0151E. The GUI RELOCATE will simply yield a
blank window with no container files showing, and therefore, you will be
unable to do the relocate.

Thanks for the help!

Bill,

I have one idea. If you enter the command:

   tdpsqlc query tdp

Do you have:

MOUNTWaitfordata .. Yes

This must be Yes in order for meta data that has migrated to
tape to be accessed. If that's not it... read on...

Try Joel's suggestion...
If Joel's ideas do not resolve the situation, please
place a call with IBM/Tivoli support. A trace will
help explain what is going wrong. Service will
have you add the following options to the
tdpsqlc command:

-tracefile=tdpsqlc.trc -traceflag=all,api

That will produce data that will help diagnose
what is going wrong with the TSM query.

Re: Subfile Backup Experience

2002-01-09 Thread Prather, Wanda

One of our TSM servers backs up approx. 350 Wintel desktops nightly, plus
about 30 Windows UNIX servers.

Our users keep their .pst files on their desktops, rather than on the
fileserver. Our daily load has been growing steadily, doubling every year,
and I determined that the biggest chunk of the growth was those .pst files.

I turned on subfile backup last Nov. 1 for all our desktops via a client
option set. I let it grab everything, not just the .pst files, and it has
dropped my daily load by about 30%!

Haven't had ANY problem with it. I tested extensively on .pst files of my
own, and I haven't been able to break it. And we have successfully done 4
bare-metal restores since implementing it. I'm a happy camper!

Hello *SMers,

Just a quick question out there for all of you. I am currently
receiving tape drive failures when trying to check in and out tapes, also
during our nightly archive. They have been increasing during the last few
months. My environment is Magstar 3570, 2 drives. I am currently running
TSM 4.1.2.0 on AIX 4.3.3. I have been cleaning the drives regularly, but
am not sure if I should be IBM involved or not. One of the main problems
is
that when the drive gets the error, the drive does not reset. It could be
the tapes causing the problems, but the drives are still not resetting.
Just yesterday someone was checking in tapes and loaded the wrong one, but
the drive failed due wrong tape being mounted. Then the drive did not
reset
itself. Is there anything that I can do without calling IBM to see if I
can get this fixed?

Lanfree backup problem with multiple management classes

2002-01-09 Thread Radoslav Bendik

Hello,

I have problem with lanfree backups (they are not completly lanfree in
some cases). I submited it as PMR 12204 in Tivoli.

When I have multiple management classes in active policy set and size of
first file to back up was smaller than TXNBYTELIMIT (default is 2000k),
then this buffer was written trough LAN. Rest of files were written trough
SAN (to the same storage pool). This in not a case when only one
management class is defined.

Problem is that in this behavior backup process needs one more mountpoint
than I would expect... Could somebody please test/confirm/disprove
described behavior?

In following example I have lowered TXNBYTELIMIT to 300. You can see

there is an open apar that addresses your situation.
This is apar PQ55669. The problem is that there may be
orphan entries in a TSM table in the db that prevents
the volume from being acessed again until the server

You are correct in that most directories are stored in the TSM data base.
They are stored there as long as they can be described in less than some
number of bytes, which I think is 256. If the name plus the access control
information exceeds the number of bytes, then its written to the dirmc.

Re: TDP for R3 uses two tapes in each session.

2002-01-09 Thread Cook, Dwight E (SAIC)

How many different management classes are defined for use within your TDP/R3
configuration file ?
(are all the management classes the same one ? )
For example, we have a different management class used for the logs because
they are more important than the db files themselves... that is, if you have
the redo logs, you can restore a table space from a backup other than the
most recent and bring it back to current by applying redo logs BUT if you
don't have the redo logs, you can't even get current from your most recent
copy of a table space.
So with that said, we push our logs into a management class using a storage
pool that has a copy pool associated with it (to protect against data loss
due to media failure) and all the .dbf's go into a management class using a
storage pool that is only one tape copy. (we have more data than could be
copied in a day... TB's of compressed data daily)

just a thought...

Re: Reuse the tapes.

2002-01-09 Thread Cook, Dwight E (SAIC)

generally, normal data expiration allows for the tapes to ~roll~ scratch
again.
files will expire based on associated management class copy group settings.
(and having expire inventory run, expireinterval of 0 says don't
automatically run expiration and you need an admin schedule to run expire
inventory or you just need to manually run it.)

OK, if all that is hap'n a full tape with a low % utilized might need to
have reclamation run against it.
it is best if you have at least two tape drives for reclamation but
it is possible with just one.
(see the user's guide for misc info on running reclamation)

hope this helps
later,
Dwight

I have been working with TSM to make backups of my servers.
The TSM server is on Windows NT and It is working with tapes too.
The TSM makes backups and keep it in hard disk, after sends the data to
tapes.
But I want to reuse the tapes again.
What can I do?

Re: Client Compression question

2002-01-09 Thread Kevin

Hi Stefan,

Using compression will really slow down the backup - mostly in backup
mode, but in restore as well. If you set the format parameter in the
device class to drive (instead of a fixed number) you will get both the
benefit of a dynamic device class with regard to number of drives (for
additional drive installations and drive failure(s)) and you will enable
automatic hardware compression. This compression is better than the
software based compression, however when the system is queried, the
number returned will reflect raw data sizes, not compressed data sizes.
Client side (software based) compression or server side (software based
compression) will work in conjunction with library based hardware
compression however you will not receive any compression benefit by
running both and the numbers returned upon query will not reflect the
actual size of data on the tape. In some cases an already compressed
file has taken 15 minutes while software based compression tried to
re-compress it. The impact is not small.

Remember, this is based on the device class specification of
format=drive, and may not be applicable to all drives, but only those
with compression capabilities. We currently use LTO based native fiber
drives.

Choosing one method of compression over the other will improve
performance and specifying hardware compression while forcing off
software compression should really improve performance.

Another neat performance tuning trick (as I'm sure you already know) is
to backup to a hard drive initially, and then force migration (set the
pool to migrate hi=0 lo=0 in a script, and then set it back to normal
again after an hour or so) to de-stage the data off the hard disk and
onto tape. This allows multiple sessions (sessions are not limited to
number of available tape drives) and hard disk is generally faster as a
storage pool.

Let me know if this helps,

Kevin.

We are using client compression for backup of a 1,5 TByte NAS

(reason is to have apparently larger disk storage pools)
Backup is done using 5 different nodes on the same machine (Dual 1 GHz
P3)
to have the opportiunity to restore with 5 sessions.
During backup i can see about 3-4 MByte per second on the network to the
TSM-server on MVS.
Restoretests for the netapp system seem to have a limit with this
compressed
data at 8-9 MB per second. (only if tapes 3590-B a filled well)
At this speed (can be observed over a longer period) TSM client and NAS
system have nearly 100% CPU load.
The data a typical userdata - many small and some large

With many small files this performance is not quite bad, but I think
you should tuning you system. What kind of library you're using? Is

 Hi.

I have been testing Novell backups and restores using a Compaq
proliant
8500 as
 the client
 box.
We have been seeing ok performance of approx 10 gb an hour for backups
and
 restores,
 of 1 million objects.
This applies both to Netware compressed and Netware uncompressed
volumes.
However when I try TSM client compression on a backup of a netware
uncompressed
volume, the performance drops to 1 gb. an hour.
It is not a resource problem the compaq cpu is hardly stirring, but it
is
definitely the TSM compression that is taking up the time (TSM tracing
shows it
as 89% of the total time)
I always believed in the past that slow performance with client
compression was
 down to
lack of cpu on the client box, but there is cpu to spare with this
 configuration.
 My question is :-
Is 1 gb an hour the best performance I that I can expect using TSM
compression
or can anyone think of reasons why that is all I am achieving ?

 thanks

Bill,

I would get IBM involved. We have 3575s and recently retired a 3570. Over
the years we've seen drive heads wear out, analog cards fail, picker
hardware wear out, etc. When those things occur, the symptoms are exactly
what you describe. Operations slowly get worse.

Re: Subfile Backup Experience

2002-01-09 Thread Kevin

Hi again Stefan.

With subfiles you will need to do a reconciliatory backup (full backup)
each week. If your LAN can support this, then subfiles will really help
reduce the differential percentage based on automatically selecting
block, byte or file level adaptive differencing.

Be careful that the cache file is not touched by an operator, and make
sure to run a full backup once a week, and you'll be fine.

Kevin.

GenericTape Device Type Problems

2002-01-09 Thread Hamilton, Brice

Currently I am running ADSM V3 AIX server using STK 9840 Drives. The
Device class I am using uses a DEVTYPE of GENERICTAPE. This was
required years ago by the 3rd party vender OMI (Now known as Gresham
Technologies) when using their Advantape Device driver for AIX. Well
the problem I am running into now is I am attempting to convert to my
new TSM V4.2 server on another physical machine. The conversion and
UPGRADE DB works like a champ, the problem is when I try and access my
data on my 9840 tapes I get an I/O error reading the Tape labels. The
only way to correct this is to use a DEVCLASS that has a DEVTYPE of
ECARTRIDGE. This works I know because I was able to test it. The BIG
problem comes in where TSM gives you no way to update the DEVTYPE in a
Device class definition. I am currently working with TSM Level 2
support on this issue with no real progress as of yet. TSM support is
telling me that I need to create a new Tape Primary storage pool on my
ADSM V3.1 that is using a DEVCLASS of ECART. Tried this also and I get
similar errors when trying to write to this new Devtype on the old
server. So I am stuck right now with my conversion. Has anyone out
there run into this problem before, and if so, what did you do to get
around it.

Thanks for your input.

Re: Tape Drive Failures

2002-01-09 Thread Robin Sharpe

Looks to me like you need to do an AUDIT LIBRARY libname CHECKL=BARCODE.
TSM keeps its own library inventory. If someone opens the library and
removes a tape or moves them around, TSM's inventory will be out of sync
with what's really in there. This can also happen on some libraries if the
library auto-loads tapes through the entry-exit ports while tapes are in
drives... the new tapes may go into the home slot of a mounted tape...
happened to us on our ATL P3000, so we turned off auto-load.

Re: Return code=4 on scheduled backap

2002-01-09 Thread George Lesho

I have two TSM servers Win2K at 4.1.5 and AIX 433 at 4.1.4.5 with clients
at 4.1.3 across the board. I get this error for the Windows clients
consistantly but not the AIX clients. I have reported this to Tivoli but
their first line support person is insisting that there is a comms loss
which will be relfected in the tsm error log (but isn't). This error occurs
when doing the FIRST incremental or an archive and doesn't appear to occur
in subsequent incrementals. If anyone has an apar or reference that I can
pass back to the Tivoli support person, I would appreciate it.

Re: Can't access TDP SQL /fileinfo metadata

2002-01-09 Thread Del Hoobler

Conclusion - with this version of TDP SQL 2.2 I must have the metadata in
a
diskpool in order to RELOCATE the data during a restore. The query of
the
fileinfo will fail with an ACO0151E. The GUI RELOCATE will simply yield
a
blank window with no container files showing, and therefore, you will be
 unable to do the relocate.

Bill,

Directing meta data to always accessible disk storage
is a good idea anyway. And your technique with the
INCLUDE statement is how we recommend customers do that.
(See Chapter 3 of the User's Guide.)

Butsomething still doesn't seem right here...

Even if the meta data is on tape... it should work...
It just may take a little while for the meta data to be
retrieved and filled in on those screens... but it should work.

I would open a call with IBM support.

Thanks,

Del

Re: Return code=4 on scheduled backup

2002-01-09 Thread Andrew Raibeck

Archives are not considered successful unless every file in your file spec
is backed up successfully. If one or more files fail, then the archive
will be flagged as failed.

The idea behind this is that archives are for long-term storage, and that
if you are looking to store the files for an extended period of time, it
is important that they *all* get archived. Thus anything other than 100%
of the files being archived will result in the failed event.

For the next release, we are planning on handling this a little
differently:

- Scheduled backup-archive client operations where all the files are
processed successfully will have a status of Success and a return code
of 0 (zero). If the operation was invoked from the command line (or
script), dsmc will return '0' to the caller.

- Scheduled backup-archive client operations where the *only* problems are
skipped files will have a status of Success and a return code of 4. If
the operation was invoked from the command line (or script), dsmc will
return '4' to the caller.

Thus the return code can be used to determine which events had skipped
files (and thus require further investigation) and which did not.

Standard caveat: This information is being provided on an informal basis,
and does not constitute any formal announcement or commitment.

The problem to which you refer, APAR IC31844, is indeed fixed in 4.2.1.15
(and up).

If you are running 4.2.1.15 and are encountering return code = 4, there
is some other reason. Check your dsmsched.log and dsmerror.log files to
see if there is some explanation therein. For example, if you have DOMAIN
C: E: F: but there is no E: drive, then that could cause the rc 4. That
isn't the only reason, just an example.

My understanding is that if you expire the password you have to initiate
a client session and type in the new password so that the scheduled
session will run properly later that evening. The alternative is that
the client / server session will have a TCP/IP communications failure as
the password will not be recognized. This of course is providing you
have password access set to generate in the client options file, and
registration set to closed.

Has this changed? I believe this is true as of version 3.1 of ADSM, but
since installing and running TSM 4.2.1.7 I haven't tried it.

How reliable are your 3590 K media

We have recently installed two 3494 libraries utilising 3590 K media.

I am experiencing media failures (I/O errors) for about 1 in 10 media

initialize on the second or third attempt but this does not fill me with
confidence.

I have even had a situation were a tape was torn then wrapped itself
around the internals of the drive when the mechanism snagged on a very
poor splice on the tape.

My question ... is anyone else noticing problems with K media. Yes
or No, either way I am interested to know so I can see if there is a
correlation between the media vendor (IE IBM, Immation BASF etc).

Re: How reliable are your 3590 K media

2002-01-09 Thread Seay, Paul

Imation builds the tapes for IBM.

We had early problems with K tapes because they had to change the packing,
but nothing like what has been talked about here. We were an early user of
K-Tapes. Typically, it is a whole case that is bad because of shipping
damage to the tapes. The tapes must be packed in special packaging that
should be there, but check. The tapes are shrink-wrapped with plastic in
groups of 10. In a case of 30 there should be an egg-like packing around
the tapes in the inner box. Then the inner box should be packed in an outer
box with foam around it. If that is not the way you got them, then that is
your problem.

If you are having a number of tapes bad it still may be the microcode. I
will have to check the level we are running, but I think it is the current
GA.

Recently, we purchased a lot of Imation tapes (the first ones were IBM). So
far there have been no problems.

Do the drives that you are using the tapes in have the green 2x sticker on
them and a few internal green parts. If not that is your problem. You
cannot use K tapes in a non-K drive. I do not know that it will prevent you
from mounting them in the drive, though I thought that it would. The other
piece we occasionally get is pressure errors FID 4.

The next piece is handling of the tapes. You drop a K tape and it is
probably dead. If you are doing offsite movements, make sure you purchase
the turtle cases recommended by IBM and Imation or explain to your vendor to
handle the cases gently. The next piece is the tapes should be shipped in a
vertical position (on edge).

Hope you get to the source of the problem.

is never on the same tapes as the logs are. That way you can take any
backup of the database and roll forward with the logs. You apparently have
2 different management classes or storage pools. What you have implemented
is the way to do it probably, but you should see the same tape remounted for
the next backup cycle unless you have used collation to somehow separate the
data.

Subject: TDP for R3 uses two tapes in each session.

Hi All...

I4m using TSM 4.2, TDP for R3 3.2.0.6 in a SAN environment. When the backup
with TDP begins, TSM mounts a tape and all the database data is backed up,
after the DB backup TSM dismounts the tape and mounts another one to backup
control data (logs, aff).

The second 100 GB LTO tape just have 500 KB of occupancy. It occurrs in the
same backup session. The backup is using two tapes in the same session.

Thanks for the help...

2002-01-09 Thread Boireau, Eric (MED)

It seems that there is an Path Issue. Does TSM working fine except this
error. Do you have the dsmameng.txt in the \...\Tivoli\TSM\Server directory
?

Do you have different version of ADSM/TSM Installed on the same box ?

I already have this message (on client side = reinstall the client). For the
server side ?

Eric

If you used the adsmscsi.sys you have to disable DLT Drive and Library from
NT/2K Drivers. If it is an TSM 4.2 on WinTel platform.

Eric

Subject: Quantum DLT 8000

Hi... every one..!!!
I have a TSM Server version 4.2.0.0 and y 4 DLT Quantum 8000. The problem is
when the server startup. I suppose that I have a conflict whit the device
driver of TSM (adsmscsi.sys) and the native driver of tape drivers
(qntmdlt.sys). When it is running the adsmscsi.sys, the drivers of quantum
doesn't work and can't startup. And when I want try a media labeling
operation, I receive a message error unsupported operation Anybody know
what is the problem or is the adsmscsi.sys support the quantum dlt 8000 ?
Thank you very much for your help Best regards.
