Re: Client Compression question
Hi Kelly, you're right. In todays networks client compression doesn't make too much sense. When we did backups within a 4 mbit TR LAN (and also later with 16mbit TR) we really got an improvement using client compression. Today with at least 100 mbit client compression is near useless, it just saves some space in your disk storage pools. For mobile users that use 64kbit lines to backup you won't want to miss client compression... Greetings from Munich, Michael Kelly Lipp wrote: Probably. Re: library sharing without SAN
Does a configuration such as that need special support by the library? What happens if both systems send commands to the robot? Also, what about the drives? Most SCSI libraries I know of have the drives cabled directly on their own SCSI channels. Definitely the two I have... an ATL P3000 and an HP 20/700. This sounds very interesting, and I'm wondering if I can use it while we migrate from the P3000 to the 20/700. Currently they are attached to two different servers - the P3000 to an F50 and the 20/700 to an HP L2000. As far as I know, the method of recording data on DLT tapes differs on those two OSes, and they cannot read each others' tapes. Re: library sharing without SAN
No special support with all the SCSI adapters that I've dealt with - mostly Adaptec and QLogic. The hardware has been capable of this for years and I've used this on many OpenVMS clusters and NT clusters. The initiators don't talk to each other, and the devices have to be capable of doing a SCSI disconnect. All arbitration and locking for the robot and drives takes place in the TSM Server. Might ease your library movement, but I've never tried crossing the data tapes between platforms. It's certainly unsupported so you'd want to rewrite the tapes even if it worked. Is that what you're thinking? Fw: DIRMC
TSM'ers, I am resending. Does anybody know what the story is on directories? Thanks, Al - Original Message - From: Al Narzisi To: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager Sent: Monday, January 07, 2002 9:57 AM Subject: DIRMC I am still not clear where or when the use of DIRMC may have changed from what I understood from the red book Getting Started with TSM. In the red book example, a separate management class pointed to by DIRMC in dsmopt of the client was created to send directory structures to a disk storage pool. This would allow rapid restoration of the directory structures during recovery. During testing, I discovered (Win2K server and Win2K client TSM 4.1): 1. Even if you use DIRMC to define the management class of directories, the directories would still default to the management class with the highest retention value. Only after coding NOLIMIT on the management class pointed to by DIRMC, did the directories get bond to the management class coded for DIRMC. 2. After the directories where bonded to the correct management class ( a MC that had a backup copy group with a destination of a disk storage pool defined exclusively for my directories), I discovered that the directories did not go to that storage pool. 3. I discovered that it did not matter what MC the directories where bond to. The directory structures are saved in the TSM data base. So, can anyone enlighten me on when this change occurred? The red book obviously does not indicate this behavior for the management of directory structures. Am I missing something here? Are there any considerations for TSM DB sizing because the directory structures are stored in the DB? Where is this documented? Thanks for your input, Al

Wait a minute, I just thought of a benefit... the reason we got the new library was because we overflowed the old one. It's still a problem juggling tapes just to do reclaims on the old system. Anyway, I was just curious how it would all work... I didn't think you could define SCSI libraries to TSM as SHARED (or don't you have to?). How do you physically cable it? Just replace the SCSI terminator(s) with a cable(s) to the other system? I guess I would want to something like this (please excuse rudimentory non-graphics): HP L2000 (TSM2) -scsi- HP 20/700 -scsi IBM F50 (TSM1) -scsi- ATL P3000 Then I would want to check some tapes into the 20/700 to allow TSM1 to do reclaims. 20/700 has 553 available slots; P3000 has none. Tape Drive Failures
Hello *SMers, Just a quick question out there for all of you. I am currently receiving tape drive failures when trying to check in and out tapes, also during our nightly archive. They have been increasing during the last few months. My environment is Magstar 3570, 2 drives. I am currently running TSM 4.1.2.0 on AIX 4.3.3. I have been cleaning the drives regularly, but am not sure if I should be IBM involved or not. One of the main problems is that when the drive gets the error, the drive does not reset. It could be the tapes causing the problems, but the drives are still not resetting. Just yesterday someone was checking in tapes and loaded the wrong one, but the drive failed due wrong tape being mounted. Then the drive did not reset itself. Is there anything that I can do without calling IBM to see if I can get this fixed? Thanks in advance, Bill Wheeler PDM Administrator La-Z-Boy Incorporated (734) 242-1444 x 6170

HELP me with DIR backup
I am currently running TSM 4.1.2.0 on an IBM ESA system. I currently have an incremental backup schedule for a node called LDMZDC01which is backed up daily and retained for 45 days. I now have a further requirement to back up a web directory assoc sub-dirs once per week of server LDMZDC01 and retain this for 6 years. I know I can achieve this by using the command function and archiving the directory and all sub directories to a different management class and storage pools. The downside of this being that I will retain a full archive copy of this data for every week for 6 years, approx. 312 copies. This would take up considerable cartridge and/or disk space. Does anyone know of a way to weekly incrementally backup this data? And if the TSM API and TDP for SQL did not change, and it just started happening yesterday with no other system changes, it is probably the nature of the data that is causing the problem. Is it ALL databases or just a certain database? What does the TDP SQL log report as a problem? If it continues to happen, I would recommend calling IBM Service. Re: Can't access TDP SQL /fileinfo metadata
Del, MOUNTWAITFORDATA is set to yes and shows so in the query. The SQL name is correct. We have the DESTINATION set to tapepool in preparation for SAN backups. I'm running a test to see if going to a diskpool makes a difference, because that's what my test servers do. Ah, now it works. I can see the container files in the RELOCATE screen. This is temporarily not a problem because I'll set up an include to send the metadata to a non-migrating diskpool. Once we go to a SAN backup, is this going to be a problem? According to the Storage Agent documentation, I can't have a disk storage pool as a destination, but the new pool isn't a destination for the data. Naturally, I know you thought of that and it will work, Del. Conclusion - with this version of TDP SQL 2.2 I must have the metadata in a diskpool in order to RELOCATE the data during a restore. The query of the fileinfo will fail with an ACO0151E. The GUI RELOCATE will simply yield a blank window with no container files showing, and therefore, you will be unable to do the relocate. If you enter the command: tdpsqlc query tdp Do you have: MOUNTWaitfordata .. Yes This must be Yes in order for meta data that has migrated to tape to be accessed. If that's not it... read on... Try Joel's suggestion... If Joel's ideas do not resolve the situation, please place a call with IBM/Tivoli support. A trace will help explain what is going wrong. Service will have you add the following options to the tdpsqlc command: -tracefile=tdpsqlc.trc -traceflag=all,api That will produce data that will help diagnose what is going wrong with the TSM query. Re: Subfile Backup Experience
One of our TSM servers backs up approx. 350 Wintel desktops nightly, plus about 30 Windows UNIX servers. Our users keep their .pst files on their desktops, rather than on the fileserver. Our daily load has been growing steadily, doubling every year, and I determined that the biggest chunk of the growth was those .pst files. I turned on subfile backup last Nov. 1 for all our desktops via a client option set. I let it grab everything, not just the .pst files, and it has dropped my daily load by about 30%! Haven't had ANY problem with it. I tested extensively on .pst files of my own, and I haven't been able to break it. And we have successfully done 4 bare-metal restores since implementing it. I'm a happy camper! TSM 4.1.3 for AIX; all TSM clients are 4.2.0; desktops are WIn2K PRO SP1 SP2. Lanfree backup problem with multiple management classes

When I have multiple management classes in active policy set and size of first file to back up was smaller than TXNBYTELIMIT (default is 2000k), then this buffer was written trough LAN. Rest of files were written trough SAN (to the same storage pool). This in not a case when only one management class is defined. 3. I discovered that it did not matter what MC the directories where bond to. The directory structures are saved in the TSM data base. You are correct in that most directories are stored in the TSM data base. They are stored there as long as they can be described in less than some number of bytes, which I think is 256. Re: TDP for R3 uses two tapes in each session.
How many different management classes are defined for use within your TDP/R3 configuration file ? (are all the management classes the same one ? ) For example, we have a different management class used for the logs because they are more important than the db files themselves... that is, if you have the redo logs, you can restore a table space from a backup other than the most recent and bring it back to current by applying redo logs BUT if you don't have the redo logs, you can't even get current from your most recent copy of a table space. So with that said, we push our logs into a management class using a storage pool that has a copy pool associated with it (to protect against data loss due to media failure) and all the .dbf's go into a management class using a storage pool that is only one tape copy. (we have more data than could be copied in a day... TB's of compressed data daily) just a thought... Re: Reuse the tapes.
generally, normal data expiration allows for the tapes to ~roll~ scratch again. files will expire based on associated management class copy group settings. (and having expire inventory run, expireinterval of 0 says don't automatically run expiration and you need an admin schedule to run expire inventory or you just need to manually run it.) OK, if all that is hap'n a full tape with a low % utilized might need to have reclamation run against it. it is best if you have at least two tape drives for reclamation but it is possible with just one. (see the user's guide for misc info on running reclamation) hope this helps later, Dwight -Original Message- From: Nazir [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, January 09, 2002 12:29 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Reuse the tapes. Re: Client Compression question
Hi Stefan, Using compression will really slow down the backup - mostly in backup mode, but in restore as well. If you set the format parameter in the device class to drive (instead of a fixed number) you will get both the benefit of a dynamic device class with regard to number of drives (for additional drive installations and drive failure(s)) and you will enable automatic hardware compression. This compression is better than the software based compression, however when the system is queried, the number returned will reflect raw data sizes, not compressed data sizes. Client side (software based) compression or server side (software based compression) will work in conjunction with library based hardware compression however you will not receive any compression benefit by running both and the numbers returned upon query will not reflect the actual size of data on the tape. In some cases an already compressed file has taken 15 minutes while software based compression tried to re-compress it. The impact is not small. Remember, this is based on the device class specification of format=drive, and may not be applicable to all drives, but only those with compression capabilities. We currently use LTO based native fiber drives. Choosing one method of compression over the other will improve performance and specifying hardware compression while forcing off software compression should really improve performance. Another neat performance tuning trick (as I'm sure you already know) is to backup to a hard drive initially, and then force migration (set the pool to migrate hi=0 lo=0 in a script, and then set it back to normal again after an hour or so) to de-stage the data off the hard disk and onto tape. This allows multiple sessions (sessions are not limited to number of available tape drives) and hard disk is generally faster as a storage pool. Let me know if this helps, Kevin. -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Stefan Holzwarth Sent: Wednesday, January 09, 2002 6:56 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: AW: Client Compression question We are using client compression for backup of a 1,5 TByte NAS system.(F760) (reason is to have apparently larger disk storage pools) Backup is done using 5 different nodes on the same machine (Dual 1 GHz P3) to have the opportiunity to restore with 5 sessions. However when I try TSM client compression on a backup of a netware uncompressed volume, the performance drops to 1 gb. an hour. It is not a resource problem the compaq cpu is hardly stirring, but it is definitely the TSM compression that is taking up the time (TSM tracing shows it as 89% of the total time) I always believed in the past that slow performance with client compression was down to lack of cpu on the client box, but there is cpu to spare with this configuration. Hi again Stefan. With subfiles you will need to do a reconciliatory backup (full backup) each week. If your LAN can support this, then subfiles will really help reduce the differential percentage based on automatically selecting block, byte or file level adaptive differencing. Be careful that the cache file is not touched by an operator, and make sure to run a full backup once a week, and you'll be fine. GenericTape Device Type Problems
Currently I am running ADSM V3 AIX server using STK 9840 Drives. The Device class I am using uses a DEVTYPE of GENERICTAPE. This was required years ago by the 3rd party vender OMI (Now known as Gresham Technologies) when using their Advantape Device driver for AIX. Well the problem I am running into now is I am attempting to convert to my new TSM V4.2 server on another physical machine. The conversion and UPGRADE DB works like a champ, the problem is when I try and access my data on my 9840 tapes I get an I/O error reading the Tape labels. The only way to correct this is to use a DEVCLASS that has a DEVTYPE of ECARTRIDGE. This works I know because I was able to test it. The BIG problem comes in where TSM gives you no way to update the DEVTYPE in a Device class definition. I am currently working with TSM Level 2 support on this issue with no real progress as of yet. TSM support is telling me that I need to create a new Tape Primary storage pool on my ADSM V3.1 that is using a DEVCLASS of ECART. Tried this also and I get similar errors when trying to write to this new Devtype on the old server. So I am stuck right now with my conversion. Has anyone out there run into this problem before, and if so, what did you do to get around it. Thanks for your input. Brice Hamilton Sr. Systems Engineer Provider HealthNet Services, Inc. Re: Tape Drive Failures
Looks to me like you need to do an AUDIT LIBRARY libname CHECKL=BARCODE. TSM keeps its own library inventory. If someone opens the library and removes a tape or moves them around, TSM's inventory will be out of sync with what's really in there. This can also happen on some libraries if the library auto-loads tapes through the entry-exit ports while tapes are in drives... the new tapes may go into the home slot of a mounted tape... happened to us on our ATL P3000, so we turned off auto-load.

Re: Can't access TDP SQL /fileinfo metadata
Conclusion - with this version of TDP SQL 2.2 I must have the metadata in a diskpool in order to RELOCATE the data during a restore. The query of the fileinfo will fail with an ACO0151E. The GUI RELOCATE will simply yield a blank window with no container files showing, and therefore, you will be unable to do the relocate. Bill, Directing meta data to always accessible disk storage is a good idea anyway. And your technique with the INCLUDE statement is how we recommend customers do that. (See Chapter 3 of the User's Guide.) Butsomething still doesn't seem right here... Even if the meta data is on tape... it should work... It just may take a little while for the meta data to be retrieved and filled in on those screens... but it should work. I would open a call with IBM support. Re: Return code=4 on scheduled backup
Archives are not considered successful unless every file in your file spec is backed up successfully. If one or more files fail, then the archive will be flagged as failed. The idea behind this is that archives are for long-term storage, and that if you are looking to store the files for an extended period of time, it is important that they *all* get archived. Thus anything other than 100% of the files being archived will result in the failed event. For the next release, we are planning on handling this a little differently: - Scheduled backup-archive client operations where all the files are processed successfully will have a status of Success and a return code of 0 (zero). If the operation was invoked from the command line (or script), dsmc will return '0' to the caller. - Scheduled backup-archive client operations where the *only* problems are skipped files will have a status of Success and a return code of 4. If the operation was invoked from the command line (or script), dsmc will return '4' to the caller. Thus the return code can be used to determine which events had skipped files (and thus require further investigation) and which did not. Re: Return code=4 on scheduled backup
The problem to which you refer, APAR IC31844, is indeed fixed in 4.2.1.15 (and up). If you are running 4.2.1.15 and are encountering return code = 4, there is some other reason. Check your dsmsched.log and dsmerror.log files to see if there is some explanation therein. For example, if you have DOMAIN C: E: F: but there is no E: drive, then that could cause the rc 4. That isn't the only reason, just an example. This of course is providing you have password access set to generate in the client options file, and registration set to closed. Has this changed? How reliable are your 3590 K media
We have recently installed two 3494 libraries utilising 3590 K media. I am experiencing media failures (I/O errors) for about 1 in 10 media when initializing with label libv. Some of the media does successfully initialize on the second or third attempt but this does not fill me with confidence. I have even had a situation were a tape was torn then wrapped itself around the internals of the drive when the mechanism snagged on a very poor splice on the tape. My question ... is anyone else noticing problems with K media. Yes or No, either way I am interested to know so I can see if there is a correlation between the media vendor (IE IBM, Immation BASF etc). Likewise. Imation. We've upgraded uCode twice to no avail. Quit ordering them. Edward(Ed) J. Finnell, III Enterprise Systems/Proj. Mgr. url:www.ua.edu
Re: How reliable are your 3590 K media
Imation builds the tapes for IBM. We had early problems with K tapes because they had to change the packing, but nothing like what has been talked about here. We were an early user of K-Tapes. Typically, it is a whole case that is bad because of shipping damage to the tapes. The tapes must be packed in special packaging that should be there, but check. The tapes are shrink-wrapped with plastic in groups of 10. In a case of 30 there should be an egg-like packing around the tapes in the inner box. Then the inner box should be packed in an outer box with foam around it. If that is not the way you got them, then that is your problem. If you are having a number of tapes bad it still may be the microcode. I will have to check the level we are running, but I think it is the current GA. Recently, we purchased a lot of Imation tapes (the first ones were IBM). So far there have been no problems. Do the drives that you are using the tapes in have the green 2x sticker on them and a few internal green parts. If not that is your problem. You cannot use K tapes in a non-K drive. I do not know that it will prevent you from mounting them in the drive, though I thought that it would. The other piece we occasionally get is pressure errors FID 4. The next piece is handling of the tapes. You drop a K tape and it is probably dead. If you are doing offsite movements, make sure you purchase the turtle cases recommended by IBM and Imation or explain to your vendor to handle the cases gently. The next piece is the tapes should be shipped in a vertical position (on edge). Hope you get to the source of the problem. -Original Message- From: Edward(Ed) J. Re: TDP for R3 uses two tapes in each session.
This gets into integrity and recovery issues. Typically, a database backup is never on the same tapes as the logs are. That way you can take any backup of the database and roll forward with the logs. You apparently have 2 different management classes or storage pools. What you have implemented is the way to do it probably, but you should see the same tape remounted for the next backup cycle unless you have used collation to somehow separate the data. -Original Message- From: Jorge Rodriguez [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, January 09, 2002 2:14 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: TDP for R3 uses two tapes in each session. Hi All... I4m using TSM 4.2, TDP for R3 3.2.0.6 in a SAN environment. When the backup with TDP begins, TSM mounts a tape and all the database data is backed up, after the DB backup TSM dismounts the tape and mounts another one to backup control data (logs, aff). The second 100 GB LTO tape just have 500 KB of occupancy. It occurrs in the same backup session. The backup is using two tapes in the same session. Thanks for the help... Re: Quantum DLT 8000
It seems that there is an Path Issue. Does TSM working fine except this error. Do you have the dsmameng.txt in the \...\Tivoli\TSM\Server directory ? Do you have different version of ADSM/TSM Installed on the same box ? I already have this message (on client side = reinstall the client). For the server side ? I have a TSM Server version 4.2.0.0 and y 4 DLT Quantum 8000. The problem is when the server startup. I suppose that I have a conflict whit the device driver of TSM (adsmscsi.sys) and the native driver of tape drivers (qntmdlt.sys). When it is running the adsmscsi.sys, the drivers of quantum doesn't work and can't startup. And when I want try a media labeling operation, I receive a message error unsupported operation Anybody know what is the problem or is the adsmscsi.sys support the quantum dlt 8000 ?
