Anti-depressants

2005-07-02 Thread David Friedman
I was just wondering what the right attitude towards anti-depressants should
be in light of the passages from the Writings which say that
hardships/suffering are a good thing. By taking anti-depressants when
depressed one is obviously making things easier for themself. If one
doesn't take anti-depressants they would have more hardship, which is said
to lead to more character development. So what to do? Let yourself suffer?
In the Writings it says that God never burdens a soul beyond their
capacity. Does this mean with or without medical assistance?

So far as I know. The only restriction I am familiar with is a
request that Baha'is should take problems with other Baha'is to the
Spiritual Assembly.

In the case of malpractice, just remember that it has to be proven
that the illness must was a direct result of the treatment and that
the physician was negligent in his application of the treatment.
This can be difficult and expensive to prove.

This is a complex topic.

I don't think there is any doubt that mood altering drugs are
over-prescribed. However they have a role to play, especially in
crisis intervention. The problem arises when a doctor finds it
easier (and more profitaable?) to prescribe a pill for extended
periods rather than help the patient deal with the problem that
caused the depression.

At the same time, there are a lot of people who feel they should not
have to put up with occasional 'down' spells. They immediately go to
their doctor and insist on a pill to make them feel 'normal'.

Re: Anti-depressants

Was this question prompted by the ridiculous rant of Tom Cruise?

David Friedman wrote:

There are two ways of healing sickness, material means and spiritual
means. The first is by the use of remedies, of medicines; the second
consists in praying to God and in turning to Him. Both means should be
used and practiced (Abdu'l-Baha, Baha'i World Faith - Abdu'l-Baha
Section, p. 375).

By taking anti-depressants when depressed one is obviously making
things easier for themself.

Nothing could be farther from the truth. Anti-depressants are rarely
the cure-all that most people imagine; for some they are ineffective or
only minimally efficacious. There are certainly different degrees and
etiologies of depression, but for severe depression anti-depressants are
usually necessary and may not make things easier, only bearable.

If one doesn't take anti-depressants they would have more hardship,
which is said to lead to more character development. So what to do?
Let yourself suffer?

Depression can be bad enough without doing nothing, which could
needlessly compound suffering and make things even worse.

In the Writings it says that God never burdens a soul beyond their
capacity. Does this mean with or without medical assistance?

With medical assistance. Why else would Baha'u'llah recommend
consulting competent medical professionals when ill?

To consult competent physicians when ill (Baha'u'llah, The
Kitab-i-Aqdas, p. 161).

First, physicians can generate higher fees for the time involved with
therapy versus the few minutes it takes to write a prescription. Other
than psychiatrists, most physicians have little or no training in
therapy and cannot make time for it in a busy practice. Second, some
depressions are caused by neurochemical or hormone imbalances and not
external problems.

At the same time, there are a lot of people who feel they should not

Antidepressants do not work that way; it may be weeks before the patient
notices any beneficial effect.

I think there are a variety of ways in which suffering may be a positive,
and because suffering is both such a universal experience and at the same
time such an obstacle to clear-thinking when we're going through it, most
holy Writings make a point of assuring us that we may well rejoice at
suffering.

An analogy from the Old Testament is that of the crucible, where rough ore
is melted and prepared for the anvil, which ultimately leads to a product of
great utility or beauty. If the rock was told beforehand to rejoice because
of the suffering he must undergo in the hands of the smith in order to
become an object of great value, he might or might not remain philosophical
during the process; but in retrospect, from his new perspective as a piece
of jewelry or sword blade or whatever, he might indeed see it as a positive
experience.

Having said that, it makes perfect sense to seek whatever legitimate help
works best in treating conditions which may actually be biochemical in
origin. I don't think the point of the passages on suffering is that it is
improper to seek to alleviate suffering either in others or in ourselves. I
think the point is to understand that suffering in one form or another is a
constant on the material plane and that it is challenging.

As I understand it, and having tried them, anti-depressants work so slowly
they don't qualify to be classed as mood altering.

I don't think there is any doubt that mood altering drugs are

Re: Anti-depressants

2005-07-02 Thread smaneck

Dear David,

We need to make a distinction between grief or sadness and clinical depression. The latter is a medical condition which can rarely be remedied without treatment. In those cases we are not only permitted but required to seek the best medical treatment available. I recall a letter written on behalf of the Guardian where he urged a Baha'i to continue with what appears to be electro-shock therapy as the best treatment then available even though he admitted it was far from ideal.

warmest, Susan
