Hi Gloria! We are doing just fine. Thanks for asking! Been pretty busy.
Finals are coming up so I've been studying. Also, been going through and
getting rid of stuff and organizing since my fiancé and I broke up and he
moved
all his stuff into the other bedroom. We are doing well as friends and
roommates. I've also been going to physical therapy for my shoulder because of
the car accident I had in February. I'm also getting ready to have surgery
on my wrist on 12/9. I've had problems with it off and on for about 11
years and the car accident made it a lot worse. Also, my computer crashed and
I had to wait to get a new one... And are internet was out for a while too.
And after my surgery I won't be able to use that wrist for some time so I
probably won't be texting or emailing for a while but as soon as I can or
if I feel like taking forever using one hand, I will let yall know how I'm
doing. As for Monster, he is running around and playing and whines at me a
lot when I'm studying and not playing with him. He is doing great though.

[Chihuahuas] Opinon: what to do with a very old Chihuahua

2011-12-04 Thread Rida MORWA Y
Hello there,

My older dog, a Chihuahua, has been with me for over 13 years. He is very
old and has been unable to stand up or walk for over a year now. He stays
sitting the whole day. We bring him his food and drink. He does dirty
himself when he needs to do it.

We are happy to continue like this, because he is still aware of everything
around him, and wags his tail when we are around, and his appetite is very
good. However our friends and neighbors keep telling us we are cruel and we
should put him to sleep. However we have no evidence that he is suffering.

Do any of you have this experience? Do you think he is suffering because he
cannot walk? Are we being cruel?

Any help in this matter is appreciated.

Thank you

Is he happy? Is he in pain? Is his bottom raw from the accidents and are
you using diapers?

Are you keeping him around for you? Or is is quality of life...still good?

There are many handicapped dogs that are living full enriched lives. Late
into their senior years.

If you dog is happy, alert, pain free and still shows a will to live, and
you are prepared to continued to provide him with your time, care, food,
water, clean his bottom and love. Then I see nothing wrong with allowing
him to live.

I know someone who has a handicapped doxie, they need to express his

If it were me, I would ask the vet. If he doesn't walk, he could have some
spinal problems that may have actually caused some paralysis. If he is
paralyzed it could be that he has no pain; but if he just has something
terribly wrong with his spine he could be in a lot of pain. Dogs don't
always outwardly show their pain.it is their natural instinct to protect
themselves against being killed by other animals.

When was the last time he was to the vet, and did the vet tell you why he
would be like this?

RE: [Chihuahuas] Opinon: what to do with a very old Chihuahua

2011-12-04 Thread Joan Croft
It sounds like you just leave him in his area and you don't pick him up to
sit by you, or carry him from one place to another. That would be very
boring for him. When Dolly had her knee surgery, I had to make sure that
Desi didn't get to her food and water and also I didn't want her to be in
the bedroom and I would be around the house doing things. I put her food
bowl and a little water in the stroller and zipped up the netting around
her. When I was in the living room, she was rolled to where I was, if I
then went to the kitchen, she was there with me also. She was happy because
she was with me and she had what she needed. Puppy strollers are really not
that expensive and if you got one, just put some soft blankets on the bottom
so that he would be comfortable and roll him around with you. It would be
very lonely if he just sits in one place all day and night. He is happy to
see you because he wags his tail, so he would like to be by you.
Additionally, if he were in a stroller it would be easier for you to play
with him. You get a few squeaky toys and squeak them and kind of get him
interested as far as chewing on them, etc. Sometimes I take the squeaky
toys and push them in with the little hole towards Dolly Desi and they get
a little burst of air.they love that.

Hi Raven,

We try as much as we can to move him around, but he is not very comfortable
with that. I think it could be well a spinal problem.

We do take him in a basket and walk and drive around, whenever we can. We do
keep him next to us when we move from room to room. The following are the

This such an individual decision. Painful always and always fraught with strong emotions. Is it too soon or am I waiting too long?? Only you and your vet truly know his quality of life. If you are at peace with your decision that this is the best course for him, then I would say the focus would be in making his life as emotionally fulfilling as possible. As helpless and dependent as he is, he needs your emotional support to make his remaining time as happy as possible. I have been through this many times, and I always know the moment has arrived by looking into my pet's eyes. If you put away your needs, and can open up and listen to them, they will let you know when they need this last _expression_ of love from you..when they need
 peace.

[Chihuahuas] OT: Smelly Litter Box

2011-12-04 Thread Susanne Defoe
Hello,
This is off-topic but thanks for any input. I have never owned cats so do
not know much about them. I am babysitting our son's cats this week.
Their litter box stinks to high heavens. He uses clumping the World's
Best Kitty Litter. I thought if I empty out all of the litter and wash
the boxes and start with all fresh litter it might help? Does anyone have
suggestions in what to do that won't make them not use their box? He feeds
them Evo. Could their food be making their poo really smelly? They are
very healthy looking and their bodies do not smell, just the box.

How often does he change the litter? Yes, I would use fresh litter!! You
have to clean it every day. Pick poop up, a few times a day. How many
cats?

A cat will not use a box if it is dirty. Cats are very clean and want clean
boxes. Where else are they going?

We pour Tidy Cats litter deodorizer in ours. It works nicely. You can also use
baking soda but we've never tried that.

Do you have one box for multiple cats?  We always had one box per cat, and
scooped them every day or two.  We used clumping litter too, but ours did not
have much of an odor.  I can't say anything about the food causing the smell,
but that is always a possibility.

2011-12-04 Thread Jan Oxendine
We have two cats and have found that odors from the litter box comes due to
dried urine stuck to the litter box's bottom and sides.  It is best to empty
the litter all out of the box once a week and wash out the box with bleach and
rinse very well if a liner is not used.  This will kill bacteria and the
odors.

We use the clumping litter and works very well when we use the litter box
liners.  We simply scoop out the clumps twice a day and put in fresh litter in
after we put in a fresh liner.

We are getting snow. It has been snowing since around midnight (it’s now

for the afternoon. Cold. High 36F. Winds WSW at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of

Boy are they nuts! We already have nearly 3” of snow. It’s only 30
 degrees now (7:30 a.m.)

My Chihuahuas won’t be going outside today. Two of the mixes with longer
coats will have fun playing in the snow.

My cats, including the new cats, Ruth and Esther, have been looking out
the windows in amazement. Maybe the young ones have never seen snow. I
know Dark Angel, Peter and Paul have seen a lot of snow. Still they seem
mesmerized by the falling white stuff.

I personally don’t really care a lot. I’m retired and I will just stay
home and watch it snow. I did do a laundry this morning. I use indoor
drying racks (dryers are too expensive). I put fresh sheets on my bed.
They have use purple Iris blooms all over them. Very cheering. I put the
“Thunder run” comforter on. It is the one with horses dashing thru some
water. It is beautiful and also very warm.
