Package: apt Version: 0.7.20.2+lenny2 Severity: wishlist If a package is in a half-configured state, apt tries to finish setting it up, it would be a nice improvement this was warned about. That would be okay, apt does in fact mention it, however it's easy to miss it in the output (1 not fully installed or removed). A nice improvement would be to list the package in question and also to mention that the service will be configured. Hi, Michael - I'm trying to install Debian on an Acer Aspire 5250 as a Christmas gift for my sister, and have encountered all sorts of problems in the process which no one seems to have solutions for, probably all hardware related. I finally decided to do a dist-upgrade from Squeeze to Wheezy to see if that might help anything - and ran into the: E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'libgstreamer0.10-0'. Please see man 5 apt.conf under APT::Immediate-Configure for details. (2) ...error, and have no idea how to get myself out of this fix other than by redoing a full netinstall of Squeeze, which will put me right back where I started. Given my situation, I'd consider this a serious bug. Thanks, -- -- Jeff -- There's nothing left in the world to prove. Bug#650536: [new check] test for missing hardening build flags
Hi! As you fellow backporter I took a quick glance at the hardening-wrapper package, and didn't spotted any problems so far (as in: I could create a backport, install it, and can still compile stuff). However, as I'm not very familiar with it, I'll ping the maintainers for their opinion. Also note that for Lenny there has already been a backport by Ulises Vitulli der...@debian.org, whom I'll have to ping before hijacking his former backport, too. Best regards, Alexander Am 03.12.2011 11:20, schrieb Niels Thykier: On 2011-12-02 01:33, Kees Cook wrote: Hi! Hey, Kees, Jakub and I had a chat about this yesterday in #d-devel. Also, I have CC'ed Alexander due to your/his role as our backporter and as ftp team member (Alexander, you may want to fast-foward to Backporting concerns below). Attached is a first-pass at the lintian support for hardening-check. There are two more things to do, which I'd like some direction on: 1) With these build tests added, all the other internal lintian tests need to either: a) add the new warnings to their tags file, or b) have all their builds adjusted to bring in the dpkg-buildflag defaults. It looks like a pretty large change, but it should be relatively mechanical to accomplish. I would think that b above is the better of the two options. I suspect this is mostly about updating the template rules file + correct a few extra tests. As an added benefit it should be fairly trivial (if we ignore architecture specificness for a moment). 2) In reality, the tests are arch-dependent. For example, relro doesn't exist at all on ia64 hppa avr32, and stackprotector doesn't exist on ia64 alpha mips mipsel hppa arm. I think this expectation needs to be built into lintian's invocation of hardening-check, but that means that the tags file in the internal lintian tests suddenly needs to be generated instead of being static. (i.e. on ia64 and hppa, no-relro shouldn't show up because it can never happen.) I proposed the use of the post_test sed script here, which hopefully should do for the actual test. The question is if we will need it only for the hardening test or we need it for all the tests with C-binaries. The latter would be very inconvient. Alternatively we can mark the tests architecture dependent. Though in that case I would prefer being able to determine the architecture list at test time. If we have to manually update the architecture list of these tests, they will most likely end up being outdated and even inconsistent. Thoughts? -Kees Accuracy of the checks: === In the previous versions of hardening-check, the hardening function check were prone to false-positives. If a binary was not using protectable-functions at all it would have been tagged as unproected (because there no protected functions in the binary). I am very pleased to see that appears to have been fixed in the new version. As I understand the code, this check should no longer have false-positives. However it may have some false-negatives - particuarly if protected and unprotected functions are mixed, it will assume the binary is protected (in its Lintian output at least). This check is not architecture dependent and should be fairly trivial to include. The stack-protector is architecture dependent (as mentioned above). Protected binaries will have a certain symbol (__stack_chk_fail), but not all binaries need it[1]. In this case the symbol will be absent without the binary is vulnerable, which currently leads to false-positives. As I understand [1], the protection is only needed if the binaries have an array on the stack. Can we detect the presence (or absence) of stack arrays (beyond relying on __stack_chk_fail or analysing the binary code)? If we can, we should be able to reduce the false-positives. Finally the relro. This is also architecture dependent, but I do not know anything about false-positives or false-negatives here. Kees, your patch marks it certain so I presume we have a low false-positive rating here (if we ignore architecture for a moment)? There was some talk about including an filter (either in Lintian or in hardening-check) based on architecture to avoid false-positives in relro and stack-protector for architectures that do not support them. Backporting concerns and output stability: == Both the FTP-masters and Lintian.d.o needs everything in stable (or stable-backports). The hardening-wrapper package appears to be small and trivial enough to backport in itself. But there might be a concern in terms of the hardening-includes that (if changed) may affect backport builds. If we can get a reliable backporter for hardening-wrapper as well, most of my concerns here covered. On the lintian.d.o side, it means we may have to nag DSA for
Bug#651370: libgl1-mesa-glx: need close on exec for dri device
On Mit, 2011-12-07 at 23:43 -0600, David Fries wrote: Package: libgl1-mesa-glx Version: 7.11-6 Severity: normal Tags: patch When dri is used the character device /dev/dri/card0 is opened. That file descriptor should be set with the close on exec file as currently those resources are not released until it is closed, and exec causes those resources to be leaked until the process terminates. This was an extra problem for the program I'm working with as it will exec itself to start fresh and change modes, but will tie up additional OpenGL resources each time it does so. Here's a patch that will open it with O_CLOEXEC if available or set the FD_CLOEXEC flag otherwise. It almost seems like there should be a common function such as open_wr_cloexec that will make sure and set the flag, but I didn't see an appropriate header file to put it in. Bug#633060: tiger: /run transition: Please switch use of /lib/init/rw to /run

Please update your package to use /run/ with a versioned dependency on initscripts, as detailed below. Hi there, I'm afraid this is a false positive: the Tiger package is *not* actually using /lib/init/rw/ in any way for running. It is referenced in a script to be used by some of the scripts that look for dangerous files in writable directories. I can add '/run' to the list of writable directories. Just so Tiger checks in that location too but I hardly see how this Tiger check inhibits the transition to /run. Since, Tiger only uses that location for a variable I will add just /run there too alongside /lib/init/rw but will keep both. I suggest you refine your scripts since this is clearly a false positive as Tiger does not use /lib/init/rw in any of its init scripts. Yes, I found this yesterday while writing all the patches. Bug#634060: binutils-z80 -- Should this package be removed?
Hi! * Joost Yervante Damad and...@debian.org [110716 16:02]: Popcon shows some usage. No longer use it myself. I skimmed over RC bugs open against orphaned packages, and stumbled over this one. On a first glance it seems trivial to fix (just update build-depends, and build-with, the symlink in the orig.tar.gz and the filename in debian/rules, and that's it), however I retain from uploading my fix, as I've no way to test it. Looking at popcon, there seems be a handfull of users, but most seem to just have it installed but not in active use. I might be a bit fast, given that the package was orphaned in July and RC buggy just since August, but I'm honestly wondering, if it wouldn't be better to just remove it. Bug#639590: binutils-z80: unbuildable in unstable
tags 639590 +patch thanks Hi! * Adam D. Barratt a...@adam-barratt.org.uk [110828 14:22]: binutils-z80 build-depends on binutils-source ( 2.21.53), but unstable now has 2.21.53.20110823-3 thus rendering -z80 unbuildable. Attached is a patch for an qa upload to fix this bug (and do some package cleanup). The fix itself is trivial, but one has also to update the symlink in the orig.tar.gz itself (which isn't really shown by debdiff or nmudiff). However, I can't test the resulting package, so I'm not going to upload. Please also see #634060 for considerations, if the package shouldn't be removed. Bug#651393: debhelper: Add a script to expand multi-arch variables within executable config files
Package: debhelper Version: 8.9.12 Severity: wishlist With the recent introduction of executable config files, there's a fear that we could end up with a lot of very different implementations that essentially accomplish the same thing. To get ahead of that, I'm proposing a different option: a script (or a set of scripts) that expand various kinds of variables within an executable file. One would use this script as the interpreter for the script, the running script would slurp in its own source, do the substitutions, and echo the results back. This way, the easy things would remain easy, just a #!/usr/lib/debhelper/dh_subst away, and harder things would still be possible. Everybody wins! I was thinking of multiple scripts, all residing under /usr/lib/debhelper/dh_subst_*, and a wrapper script, dh_subst, that would run all of the dh_subst_* scripts. We could have dh_subst_multiarch, dh_subst_env and similar scripts, all doing one thing only. The end result would become something like the following .install file: , | #!/usr/lib/debhelper/dh_subst | debian/tmp/usr/lib/${DEB_HOST_MULTIARCH}/libfoo.so.* | debian/${VARIANT}/foo.conf /etc/foo/ ` I have a half-baked implementation too, but documentation and tests are missing, and as such, I'm not comfortable showing it just yet. I'd like to hear your opinion about this suggestion before I go further. -- System Information: Debian Release: wheezy/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 3.1.0-1-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.utf8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages debhelper depends on: ii binutils2.22-1 ii dpkg-dev1.16.1.2 ii file5.09-2 ii html2text 1.3.2a-15 ii man-db 2.6.0.2-3 ii perl5.14.2-6 ii po-debconf 1.0.16+nmu1 debhelper recommends no packages. Bug#651399: xdmx crashes on GLX requests
Package: xdmx Version: 2:1.11.2.901-1 Severity: important Dear Maintainer, running any glx app, even glxinfo, or glxgears makes whole xdmx crash. Also trying running mplayer with -vo xv, or -vo gl make xdmx crash. (mplayer -vo x11 works, but extremally slowly) I have standard X server running on 10.0.2.5 and 10.0.2.5, with gdm3 config change to make X listen on TCP. After logging on two machines, and disabling authirozation by xhost + on both, I started from one of machine (10.0.2.5): startx `which twm` -- \ /usr/bin/Xdmx :1 \ -display 10.0.2.5:0 \ -display 10.0.2.8:0 \ -ignorebadfontpaths \ +xinerama Then running glxinfo, make xdmx crash. 10.0.2.5 have nvidia geforce 8600 GT, with nvidia 290 drivers (GLX and XV works on Xorg without xdmx). Bug#650536: [new check] test for missing hardening build flags
* Niels Thykier ni...@thykier.net, 2011-12-08, 12:06: I was informed (and have verified) that hardening-check uses ldd(1). Unfortunately, ldd(1) appears to be (semi-)executing the binaries it is run on[1]. This smells like a CVE in the making, AFAIUI, ldd in our libc is not vulnerable to arbitrary code execution since 2.10.1-7. The other problem with using ldd is that it won't work for binaries of foreign architecture. so would it be possible for you to update hardening-check to use readelf instead[2]? Currently ldd is used to discover which libc the binaries is linked to, in order to read symbol from the libc library. But this won't work, even when using readelf, for foreign architecture binaries, for the simple reason that such libc might not exist on the user's system. -- Jakub Wilk -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#651391: wicd-daemon: Unable to connect/configure
What template did you use there? I don't remember any template being renamed, this bug sounds weird to me :) I am using a custom template, attaching. Does it happen with wicd-gtk too? no, it connects to the encrypted one but seems to fail to connect to the open one (which works with the older version of wicd). Anyway upgrading deletes my configuration so i need to re-select the wanted template, username, password, connect to all with same ssid and so on. So to make it connect on the new version i must configure it before, old settings disappear. (wicd-kde is not yet up-to-date with the new DBus API) After reconfiguring the encrypted network (and turning into string what seemed python lists that were as default values), it connects to the encrypted one from wicd-kde too. When i tried to connect to the open network with the curses, i got a glimpse of a python error, but the shell wouldn't allow me to select and i wasn't fast enough to take a screenshot. Bug#611135: gvfs-gdu-volume-monitor (and gvfs-afc-volume-monitor) are respawned continuously, proc goes 100%
Hi, I'm hit by this bug as well on a squeeze system. It happens either when opening my gnome-session (in this case I restart gdm and next login is OK) or after some time when opening a GTK file requester. In this case, the application opening the requester hangs and CPU usage goes to 100%, not by the application itself, but by dbus-daemon, udisks-daemon and gvfs-gdu-volume-monitor (the latter continously respawning itself). The only way out I found (apart from exiting the gnome session entirely and logging in again) is restarting dbus from a root console (but then gnome-screensaver and the notification icons don't work anymore). I found some reference on Google claiming it may be caused by unmounted disk partitions (I have a few unmounted partitions for alternate system and backups) but this shouldn't break your desktop like this. -- Etienne Vogt (etienne.v...@obspm.fr) Observatoire de Paris-Meudon Service Informatique -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#594800: embedded libraries
Now that enet is taken care of, I believe the only remaining embedded library is libmozjs/spidermonkey. In current SVN (will be in 0ad alpha 8) there is support for building against libmozjs185 (tested on Ubuntu). Dunno however if it will works with Debian libmozjs. 0ad also provides a custom embedded copy of FCollada. There was some work on setting up a FCollada project, but it looks like it is abandoned now: http://www.wildfiregames.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=14539 https://github.com/fcolladaCE/fcolladaCE Then it is also using its patched version of premake4: http://www.wildfiregames.com/forum/index.php? showtopic=14173st=100p=226306#entry226306 Lastly, also have a look at the Ubuntu packages available at: https://launchpad.net/~wfg/+archive/0ad.dev -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. A simple reinstall of the 1.7.0+ds1-9 packages won't work since it appears the configuration format of 1.7.1~b3-1 differs from the previous one, and running 1.7.1~b3-1 appears to transition your config files to that new format. For example, simply downgrading to 1.7.0 and trying to connect to a network that needs username/password credentials fails, since after the downgrade, 1.7.0 tries to connect with username ['user'] and password ['password'], instead of trying to connect with user and password as it used to. Bug#607267: /usr/bin/scp: fails to notice close() errors
FWIW this is unreproducible as of kernel 3.2 rc2 so I guess this is squeeze only for cifs shares (as can be verified by running the test on a squeeze live CD). If there are other filesystems that might produce the same behaviour under some circumstances in current kernel I don't know. However, the close() man page clearly states that only doing fsync() you can be sure your file was closed successfully. There is little risk of introducing a new bug with such a change: if(enableLog.isLoggable(PlatformLogger.FINEST) { // existing code } However, it saves serializing all X11 resources to a string representation by a hidden call to XEvent.toString (which invokes XEvent.getFieldsAsString) A patch is available here: http://mail.openjdk.java.net/pipermail/awt-dev/attachments/20111021/0377d133/XComponentPeer.patch -- System Information: Debian Release: wheezy/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 3.1.0-1-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=de_DE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages openjdk-7-jre depends on: ii libaccess-bridge-java-jni 1.26.2-8 ii libasound2 1.0.24.1-4 ii libatk1.0-02.2.0-2 ii libc6 2.13-21 ii libcairo2 1.10.2-6.1 ii libcups2 1.5.0-13 ii libfontconfig1 2.8.0-3 ii libfreetype6 2.4.8-1 ii libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0 2.24.0-1 ii libgif44.1.6-9 ii libglib2.0-0 2.30.2-4 ii libgtk2.0-02.24.8-2 ii libjpeg8 8c-2 ii libpango1.0-0 1.29.4-2 ii libpng12-0 1.2.46-3 ii libpulse0 1.1-2 ii libx11-6 2:1.4.4-4 ii libxext6 2:1.3.0-3 ii libxi6 2:1.4.3-3 ii libxrender11:0.9.6-2 ii libxtst6 2:1.2.0-4 ii openjdk-7-jre-headless 7~b147-2.0-1 ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.4.dfsg-3 Versions of packages openjdk-7-jre recommends: ii ttf-dejavu-extra 2.33-2 Versions of packages openjdk-7-jre suggests: ii icedtea-plugin [icedtea6-plugin] 1.1.4-1 -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#651316: a suggestion to this bug
in my case X freezes and i'm not dropped to the login manager. i have antiX sid with slim login manager all up to date. i have read this on phoronix some time ago http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_itempx=MTAyMTA it talks about the 965g driver being dropped from the mainline mesa. maybe that is the problem that we are experiencing. my video card is: Graphics: Card: Intel Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary) X.Org: 1.11.2.901 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev, vesa) Resolution: 1280x800@60.0hz GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel 965GM x86/MMX/SSE2 GLX Version: 2.1 Mesa 7.11.1 downgrading to the testing version of libdrm-intel1 solves the problem for me as well. -- Make less, buy less, use less, throw away less. Bug#651318: xserver-xorg: EQ overflowing -- probably stuck in an infinite loop
Thank you for your quick response. At 20:02h, on Wednesday, December 07, 2011, in message 20111207190214.gi1...@radis.cristau.org, on the subject of Re: Bug#651318: xserver-xorg: EQ overflowing -- probably stuck in an infinite loop, you wrote - Crashes how? The screen goes totally black, the monitor hardware out of range popup appears, and the machine becomes totally blocked not responding to keyboard input (even caps lock on /off) pressing the power button to signify shutdown unless held in for the four second hard power down). [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop. This is just a symptom of some problem. Yes a rather fatal bug reminiscent of Windoze blue screen of death. At a minimum we'll need the corresponding log Which log? Please send details and I will comply. and some description of what you're doing when that happens. Usually clicking the mouse, so it could be an interaction problem between imwheel and the Xorg server. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#651424: mailscanner: Aptitude full-upgrade ask to remove mailscanner
Package: mailscanner Version: 4.79.11-2.2 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, *** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate *** * What led up to the situation? I was trying to do a full-upgrade of the system. * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? aptitude update followed by: aptitude full-upgrade * What was the outcome of this action? I copy directly the aptitude messages: The following packages will be upgraded: libcrypt-openssl-random-perl libdbd-sqlite3-perl libdbi-perl libfilesys-df-perl libhtml-parser-perl liblocale-gettext-perl libnet-dns-perl libnet-libidn-perl libnet-ssleay-perl libnetaddr-ip-perl libsocket6-perl libterm-readline-gnu-perl libtext-charwidth-perl libtext-iconv-perl libunicode-string-perl libuuid-perl libxml-parser-perl perl perl-base perl-modules razor 21 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 11.2 MB of archives. After unpacking 17.0 MB will be freed. The following packages have unmet dependencies: libdigest-sha1-perl: Depends: perlapi-5.12.3 which is a virtual package. The following actions will resolve these dependencies: Remove the following packages: 1) libdigest-sha1-perl 2) mailscanner I'm not sure if it's a problem if libdigest-sha1-perl, perlapi-5.12.3 or mailscanner itsef, but aptitude insist on removing mailscanner. The package libdigest-sha1-perl is available in sid, but seems to have disappeared from wheezy. * What outcome did you expect instead? Usual system upgrade. I didn't include configuration files because I think it isn't a configuration issue, but I might supply them if needed. Thanks in advance, and keep up with excellent work! *** End of the template - remove these lines *** -- System Information: Debian Release: wheezy/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 3.1.0-1-686-pae (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages mailscanner depends on: ii debconf [debconf-2.0]1.5.41 ii libarchive-zip-perl 1.30-4 ii libconvert-tnef-perl 0.17-11 ii libdbd-sqlite3-perl 1.33-1 ii libdbi-perl 1.616-1+b1 ii libdigest-sha1-perl 2.13-2 ii libfilesys-df-perl 0.92-3+b2 ii libhtml-parser-perl 3.68-1+b1 ii libmailtools-perl2.08-1 ii libmime-tools-perl [libmime-perl]5.502-1 ii libnet-cidr-perl 0.14-1 ii libnet-dns-perl 0.66-2+b1 ii libnet-ip-perl 1.25-3 ii libole-storage-lite-perl 0.19-1 ii libsys-hostname-long-perl1.4-2 ii perl 5.12.4-4 ii sendmail-bin [mail-transport-agent] 8.14.4-2+b1 ii spamassassin 3.3.2-2 ii ucf 3.0025+nmu2 ii unzip6.0-5 Versions of packages mailscanner recommends: ii clamav 0.97.3+dfsg-1 ii clamav-daemon 0.97.3+dfsg-1 ii libnet-cidr-lite-perl 0.21-1 ii tnef 1.4.8-1 ii wget 1.13.4-1 Versions of packages mailscanner suggests: pn libmail-spf-query-perl none pn libnet-ldap-perlnone pn unrar-nonfree none -- Configuration Files: /etc/MailScanner/MailScanner.conf changed [not included] /etc/MailScanner/rules/spam.whitelist.rules changed [not included] /etc/MailScanner/spam.assassin.prefs.conf changed [not included] /etc/default/mailscanner changed [not included] -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
