RE: [IMail Forum] Mail from web server

2004-09-15 Thread imailtech
Kevin,

Then you email cleints should be using SMTP auth! If they are already
using SMTP auth then there is not problem with turning on relay for
addresses. If you do not have relay for address or no mail relay set then
you are prpbabpy an open relay.

That's the problem. I do use SMTP auth. This is in addition to either No
Mail Relay or Relay Mail for Addresses. So, all forms on the web pages fail
because they do not have SMTP auth. The fact that they are local makes no
difference.

 For instance,
as John showed, querying directly for the MX record seems to work, but
not
when you try to follow the logical path from the root servers you can't
get
 there. How does that work?

I didn't check his results -- but no matter how he did it, he does not get
a valid MX record back. An MX record that has an IP address in it is
invalid (it's OK if the DNS server returns an MX record with a hostname in
it *and* another record that gives the IP of the hostname, but it is
illegal for the MX record to have an IP in it).

DNSExpert by Mice and Men. (Blast shields up.)

I was in a hurry at the time and did not post a comment. While a MX record
was found, as Scott pointed out, it was not a valid one as it was a IP and
not a host record with an associated A record.

You just do not get it do you?

Please separate the two issues.

1. Your e-mail clients must use SMTP Authentication. By doing so, they are
proving who they are to the server and are then allowed to send e-mail
through it. Relay settings do not matter, as SMTP Authentication takes
precedence.

2. Your web server process is unable to do SMTP Authentication, and
therefore you must configure Relay for Addresses for THAT WEB SERVER! You
must enter the IP ADDRESS OF THAT WEB SERVER in the relay for addresses box.

Now, quit mixing up the two and read what we have been telling you.

How many times can we go around on this?

You enter your web servers' source addresses (as seen by IMail) in the
'Relay for Addresses' list. This method has been used for many, many
years by many, many admins.

Ive also seen this twice on 8.12 and
only with Outlook and its Junk e-mail box.  It was amazing how fast the file would
grow.  First time it crashed SMTP because
the file filled the hard drive (the quota is ignored as has been noted earlier).
Ended up stopping the IMAP service in
order to delete the file the second time before it got out of hand.

We have tried to convince Outlook users
to keep the Personal Folders off the server, it tends to avoid headaches.  For instance, Outlook occasionally insists on
placing an Inbox folder on the server.  The
result is that the user can no longer see her incoming messages because mail
doesnt go to an inbox folder but to main.mbx.

IMail 8.12, new install. One of the users all of a sudden ended up
with a mailbox called IMIP and there are two messages in it that were addressed
to the user. There were no rules setup to process incoming mail for any
user, nor are the users themselves knowledgeable enough to have done this
themselves. They are using POP, so it is not an IMAP folder.

In the Info Manager tab, the sub area is defaulting to this IMIP box, where
everyone else is defaulting to main. It will not allow me to change the

To remove sysmmdd.txt files from spool you need a hex editor,
then stop smtpd32.exe service, open it with hexeditor, then find string
sys%
replace it (for example) as s\s%. Then create a subdirectory in spool
called s.

Seems to be works fine.

Old file not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update

I got the same error. As Tamara said, contact support (took me all day
yesterdayliterally! I emailed them at 7am and finally called at 2pm.
Only to be put on hold for an hour.

I have to say though after I called back (after holding for an hour and
slamming the phone down) Tamara was quick to call me back.

Did the full install last night everything seems fine now.

It used to be you could call the 781-676-5700 number and get customer
service, tell them that support had instructed you to call to get a
password for the full install, and they would give it to you.
***Usually*** customer service isn't as backed up as tech support is.
There are only around 5-7 tech's, and one supervisor in support, so when
something goes wrong, they are slammed.

it does, but with a different session id than the lines (From, to, ...)
so, for a particular spool file D.smd there is no way, by just looking

That info can only be obtained by looking inside the Qxxx.smd while it is

Yep, trying to thread together IMail SMTP sessions from all the log lines
has always sucked.

another logging sucks point is that when the SMTPD server sends a 250 for
a msg as received (written to disk), SMTPD does not give the Msg ID to the
SMTP client, which can log it.

250 Message queued
when
250 Message queued as 473577D622
... would simplify other mail administrators lives (like IMGate admins
trying to trace msg from IMGate to IMail).

Also, the (g|l|r)deliver lines do not contain the msg ID. quite incredible
Another one is the SMTP delivery failure reasons are not fully logged.
On tiny volume mailservers, physical adjacency in the log file helps, but
with any kind of volume, it's hopeless.

[IMail Forum] Getting kicked out of IMAIL

2004-09-15 Thread Kathy Lees
I have a client that keeps getting kicked out of her IMAIL when she accesses
it remotely. Three things have happened...

1) She is composing a message and clicks on send. She gets logged out and
has to log back in. Not sure if message is sent.
2) She tries to attach a message and when she clicks on attach, it kicks her
out. (Attachments are 49kb)
3) She deletes some messages from her inbox, and gets a message telling her
to refresh the screen. When she does, it kicks her out.

Any suggestions?

[IMail Forum] Killer WebMail @ Mac/Netscape

2004-09-15 Thread Barry Bahrami
I received a trouble ticket from a user on a Mac/Netscrape combo. He said
the Killer WebMail interface was not showing up properly. After going to
his location to see it for myself, I've confirmed - this combo only shows
two text boxes with no button or text or anything.

Is this a known issue? Is there a fix?

Re[2]: [IMail Forum] Remove logs from spool directory...

2004-09-15 Thread Sanford Whiteman
To remove sysmmdd.txt files from spool you need a hex editor,

This is easier than using the syslog facility to easily (and
_supportably_) put them anywhere you want, including separate log
paths for each service?

I don't think binary hacking is at all justified in this situation.

It's simple -- check the log files. :)
The log files should show almost exactly where the delay is.

it remotely.

Stop the Web Server. Delete all the orphaned files out of the spool/web
folder. Restart the web service - problem solved.

Can you get there from the IMail server itself? Can you get there just
using the IP?
