RE: [IMail Forum] Attachments Safari

2007-05-16 Thread Andy Ognenoff
I don't know if your issue is the same as mine but I know that all of my
8.22 webmail clients get that gibberish issue when attachments are sent from
Outlook with UUENCODING on. The fix is to just turn that off on the sending
side.

In Outlook:
Tools Options Mail Format Internet Format, then turn off UUENCODE
format attachments.

We are running Imail 8.22. I have very few mac users who use webmail.  One
is complaining that attachments are not being downloaded properly from
webmail with his Safari browser.  They download as gibberish... is there
some known issues with Safari on this version of webmail?

RE: [IMail Forum] Attachments in Email Body

2006-10-19 Thread Bruce Barnes

Another question, along the same line:

Is there a way to set a domain so the users who use the web interface can
ONLY send e-mail in PLAIN TEXT?

One of my customers has a groups of day surgery centers and their new
e-mail policy prohibits the sending or receiving of anything other than PLAIN
TEXT messages.

Several Chicago area hospitals have adopted this same policy and the
management offices of at least 2 major universities in Illinois have adopted the
policy of plain text only messages as well. If this is not already capable
in 2006.1, it should certainly be considered in a VERY CLOSE future
release!

I have two email accounts (General Manager Sales Manager) that says
attachments are coming through.

The Log files are indicating a status =1.

No mentioned of files being stripped by receiver or sender email.

All exe, scr, pif, and .vbs files are going to QUARANTINE ( mailbox not a
submail box.)
No getting caught in spam.

You probably need to use a program alias for

Look at the dates of the files. If they are more then 60 minutes old, they
are orphaned.

 Hi,

we've been having problems with attachments coming through web
messaging recently. Many users report that when they click on the
 binary attachment
links (save target as..) in a message, the gathering file information
 box just hangs there indefinitely.

 Anyone else been through this?
 We're running web messaging v8.05

 Best regards,
 Eric Carr

Look at the dates of the files. If they are more then 60 minutes old, they
are orphaned.

We have two (or more) customers who can't upload attachments. After
indicating what file you want to upload, and pressing attach, the screens
refreshes with 'no files attached' in the attachment list.

 Has anyone experienced this?

I have also seen this. I can watch the file being created in the spool/web

I have not been able to figure out why it refreshes with out the filename

2004-07-26 Thread Panda Consulting S.A. Luis Alberto Arango

I got exactly the same problem last week..
I still dont know if it was solved or not my customer is out of
town and hasnt been able to test the account again-.

1. I make sure to follow this
instructions:

IMail
- Web Messaging Attachments Problems and various Browsers

http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IM-19981110-DD03.htm

I also read

http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IM-19990118-EM03.htm

2. I asked the user for permission to
change the password and try it out my self. I send an email with the attachment
and it didnt make it. I restarted services (after making sure I applied
the KB mentioned above) and try again. Attachments started to work again with that
username for me. I have no idea what happened. No .tmp files in the users
mailbox folder.

I am still waiting for the customer to
come back and try again to make sure everything works fine now.

By the way, just to make sure the
attachments are being uploaded go to IMAIL\SPOOL\WEB. That folder receives the attachments
temporarily, while they are sent. When they are not sent this case- the
attachment remains there forever. You can monitor the web folder while talking
to your customer and doing some tests. That way you can make sure the
attachment is being properly attached to the message by your customer.

everything in a mailbox is in the, duh, .mbx file. It's ASCII text, put on

(old) attachments of delivered msgs can't be left in the spool since they

RE: [IMail Forum] Attachments

Judging by the error message, are the Excel documents password protected?

If a file is password protected, anti-virus scanning usually has trouble
scanning the file, and by default they will not allow the file through.

Have you tried getting the external users to send you attachments that are
not password protected? Or how about other types of files? Is it only excel
documents that are not coming through?

I would send them an attachment, which you know is not password protected
(just make up a dummy spreadsheet), and email it to them. Then have them
FORWARD the email back to you. See if that comes through. If it does, I
would say they are password protecting their attachments.

I'd try that first.

RE: [IMail Forum] Attachments

2004-05-11 Thread Chris Jones
It shouldn't do, but could you test by setting up one email client? You
could even set it up as an IMAP account, that way you won't lose anything
from your Webmail.

Is it only files from a particular source? (ie the same sender) Or is it all
Microsoft Word attachments?

As I said earlier, but substitute a Word doc instead...I'd send a few tests
to an external address, and then forward it back. Make sure it's fine when
it gets to the external account, and then if it is still fine when it comes
back.

If so, then that almost rules out the problem being with your setup. It
would point to the files themselves being malformed or something. Many
gateways won't scan malformed file types, and thus reject the file.

Re: [IMail Forum] Attachments

2004-05-11 Thread R. Scott Perry

We are currently having problems with attachments in emails. We have an
outside agency which emails us teachers CVs for teaching positions at the
school. When we recieve these emails the subject is changed to
undetermind message and has the following added.
...
What can be causing this problem?
It is almost certainly something on their end -- some sort of oddball AV or
content management software.

To prove it, you can have the agency send the same file to you through
another mailserver.

It might help to be even a bit more descriptive than that. Maybe post
the logs for the session, check the spool. Also try a test of sending
an attachment from Web Messaging by using a browser on the IMail server
in order to mitigate outside influences (like MTU settings in a router).

I just had this problem. I found a file in the user folder, that was

the file started with UT~. I had to reboot the server delete the files
and then the users could send attachments.

Re: [IMail Forum] Attachments orhapned in SPOOL folder

2003-12-13 Thread R. Scott Perry

I am running Imail Server 6 (last version, with all patches) on an IIS 5 /
W2K server.

Each week I am seeing more and more orphaned JPG, PDF, EPS files in my
\spool folder (where the Imail logxxx.txt files reside). Why are these
attachments being left in the \spool folder?

(Note: These files are not viruses/scripts posing as other file types.)
That's normal. That will occur when someone tries uploading an attachment
in web messaging, but it is aborted for some reason. IMail v6 won't clean
up the files, so they get left there.

We have been running Imail now for about 8 months and so far have only one
issue we can't seem to solve.

We are looking for a way to remove specific attachments (.jpg, .gif) from
messages without deleting the entire message. I have been through
everything I can find and all I come up with is that we can write a
rule/filter to move the message or delete it but no way to simply remove the
attachment and deliver the message. Moving the message does not solve the
problem and deleting is not practical since the message may contain needed
information.

Currently we strip all image attachments at the firewall and a notice is
added to the message that a file was stripped and why. We would like to
open this up so we can allow the attachments through the firewall and set
Imail to allow specific users only to receive the image attachments.

Is this possible with Imail?

Thanks for any input,
J

Could anyone with version 8.x check something for me?

In web messaging, enable forwarding of attachments. Then, try to forward a
mail with a binary attachment (.jpg, .ocx, anything like that). When you
click forward, does the attachment show up in the attachment list before
 you click send?

Any suggestions why it doesn't on my installation, would be appreciated

I just realized this right now- MS Internet Exploder doesn't know or
care about attachments when we're using Webmail. It's the IMail server
that see's that 'forward attachments' is set in user preferences, and
therefore display the attachment in the Compose Mail window.

OBTW- I'm using the KWM templates..

Subject: [IMail Forum] Attachments in web messaging

 Hi,

we've been having problems both in versions 6.x and 8.x with attachments
in
web messaging. A user's preferences has been set to include attachments
when
forwarding, but appearantly forwarded mails only include their attachments
if the attachment is any kind of textfile. Binary files (.ocx, .jpg, etc)
are not included as attachments in forwarded mails, while documents (.doc
 etc) works fine.

Any ideas why this is happening?

 Thanks,
 Eric

I've had this basic rule setup right from the Imail knowledge base, for
months now and all of sudden after upgrading to 8.02, it's catching emails
that have no attachments at all.

 X-IMail-Rule:
 B~name=.*\.scr!OR!B~name=.*\.exe!OR!B~name=.*\.com!OR!B~name=.*\.bat!OR!
 B~na
 me=.*\.reg!OR!F~name=.*\pif:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Data- .com]

I have it implemented as one rule in Imail with OR's separating each
extension. Just today I started seeing various emails that showed in the
header that they were tripping my attachment rules yet the email has zero
attachments. Some of them are HTML emails and one is just plain text. It
looks like the rule is all right, and it certainly never caught
 non-attachment emails before 8.02.

Anybody else seen this kind of thing?

I´m using Imail 7.04. From yesterday on the SMTP server doesn´t send mails
with attachments. There were no changes, (configuration, kill file, declude,
etc.). I thought it could be a virus problem but the antivirus program found
nothing. I couldn´t find anything in the logs. Any idea?

Does it send the E-mail (stripping the attachment), or not send the E-mail
at all?

If it is stripping the attachment, it's almost certainly being done on the
mail client, not the mail server. Neither IMail nor Declude will alter
attachments in any way.

If it is stopping the E-mail from being delivered, you should check the
IMail and Declude log files to see if they report anything unusual (for
example, if your virus scanner's definitions started detecting a virus in
all files, the Declude Virus log file would let you see that).

The mail client doesn´t send the mail at all. It starts sending the mail and
then it says the smtp server didn´t answer in xxx seconds. Do you want to
wait . and stops. But if I send the mail without the attachment, it
sends it normally.

I was wondering if anybody could tell me how an image is attached to an
email
when it is sent with an html email. It looks to me that it isn't even
attached
because there is no paperclip in the email summary.

The image is still attached to the email just as any other attachment. When
Outlook or the express version sees the attachment is referenced in the HTML
portion, it does not show it as a paperclip attacment.

When i look at the email body
the image is referenced in a wierd img tage that looks like this:

IMG alt= hspace=0
SRC=/X9cdf9fc8939892939bead8aca9/attach/Main/1/0/37351/cid:016d01c1dc42$e8
907ca0$9600a8c0@adam
align=baseline border=0

Is this image actually sent with the email in binary or is it saved in the
spool directory or something like that?

This IMG tag is a reference to the Mime segment in the email that contains
the image.

when it is sent with an html email. It looks to me that it isn't even

A paperclip, I believe, is just a Microsoft icon indicating something (I
think they have an animated one that indicates that the computer is
listening to you for Word, and a static one indicating an attachment).

A true attachment would have some type of link you could click (a paperclip
icon, the file name, whatever) to download the file.

With HTML, however, it is likely set up as an inline attachment -- one
that is supposed to appear within the body of the E-mail, rather than as an
attachment.

When i look at the email body
the image is referenced in a wierd img tage that looks like this:

IMG alt= hspace=0
SRC=/X9cdf9fc8939892939bead8aca9/attach/Main/1/0/37351/cid:016d01c1dc42$e8907ca0$9600a8c0@adam;

align=baseline border=0

Is this image actually sent with the email in binary or is it saved in the
spool directory or something like that?

It's an image within the original E-mail. If you were using a POP3 or IMAP
client, the whole E-mail would be downloaded (the message body in text,
HTML, and the picture). With web messaging, just the message body is sent,
but there is a link to the attachment (which IMail's web messaging will
handle).

With web messaging yes. Handling all of the different
possibilities of forwarded MIME-types from OE, OL and AOL is
difficult. With IMAP no. We just return what the client asks
for. I know that AOL doesn't always use boundaries within
its forwarded messages which means that they become plain text.

Re: [IMail Forum] Attachments

2002-01-30 Thread Alan Shepro

FWIW..

I, too, had problems opening attachments from web messaging. I was testing with .pdf
files. I was able to open the attachments by saving them and opening them directly
with Acrobat Reader, but they would not open directly from IE/Web Messaging. If I
clicked on the file, Acrobat would start and the the file would open. So I knew my
file associations were or seemed correct. I even called Ipswitch and got connected to
a senior tech in a surprisingly short amount of time. I was then put on speakerphone
and other techs got involved. No resolution, though.

For the heck of it, I continued looking into it when I got home and the same
messages/attachments that gave me problems at work were fine at home.

I ended up reinstalling Acrobat Reader and all is well. I guess with all of the stuff
that I install and uninstall on my workstation...anything goes. I've now built a
workstation that I can rebuild to a clean and known good configuration that I can use
for testing.

Have Version 7.05 and HF-2 installed.
If I send an attachment from Excel .xls, then check account with WebMail
the attachment does not show. Log out and then check that account with
Outlook any version, the attachment shows and I can get it. Help Please
___

Michael,

I just sent an Excel file from Outlook 2000 (set on plain-text) to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] You can log in to http://killerwebmail.com/
(running 7.05 and HF-2) with demo and blue to see the result. The file
came through fine.

Next I sent one with RTF format, and webmail predictably choked on the
attachment, showing it as winmail.dat. This is typical of any
non-Microsoft email client, trying to deal with a very MS-centric message
format. But it still tried to show the attachment.

So, I would suggest you try different email clients / different settings
on the sending side, to see what might be causing the problem, as it
doesn't seem to be caused by 7.05 and HF-2.

ps. Note that you'll get more people to read and respond to your messages
in this forum if you send them in plain-text format.

One possible cause is that there was a break in the user's connection during

Did you update your web templates to the latest version from the template

 Hi,

In our highschool all students use webmail to read their e-mails.
Sometimes
saving attachments from webmail isn't possible because they get two kinds
of
 errors.

One is that the attachment exist but is 0Kb big, allthough they shouldn't
be. e.g. when the attachment is a powerpoint or word document you can open
 it but it is empty

Second they get an error saying that there isn't enough space on disk to
save the attachment. Allthough they've got 1 Gb of space on disk free...

We've installed all necessary patches for version 6 till v6.06. (unlimited
 users)
We don't want to upgrade to v.7 because I must be shure the problem must
be
solved with this. If this won't solve the problem the IT staff wan't to
change mailserver to Exchange and I try to hold this but If I can't solve
 this.

 Things to know:

 - The mailserver is dedicated and connected directly to Internet without
firewall or proxy, just a router
 - The clients where behind a MS Proxy but I changed this with a router
because I found that article in kb about problems with MS Proxy and
 attachments - problem not solved
 - On the mailserver was an antivirus software installed but I removed this
because I thought it was the antivirus who destroyed these attachments -
 problem not solved...

Todd,

Okay, I did it for you even though you didn't write back! A bit
of penance for participating in all that OT activity.

To do this, you will need a copy of bcwmail, a command-line SMTP
sender that's exremely easy to use and cheap shareware. Download a
copy from www.bcwaresystems.com before you start (I have no
affiliation with them). It used to be called sendmail.exe, but
Sendmail got mad. Its purpose is just that, to create a Win32
equivalent to running Sendmail from the *nix command line that has
lots of features, like HTML (blah) and attachment support. These
features make it better than Imail's command line by far. It has a nag
at the bottom of every message if you don't register it--maybe that's
even okay in your environment.

Okay, now that you've got it, put it in the Imail directory. Create a
Program Alias that you want to be handle the attachment feedback. (If
you want different attachments to be linked to a user's sub-areas, you
can also use rules and Info Manager's After responding, forward mail
to: feature to filter the mail and forward it to the appropriate
Program Alias.) To start, though, just create the PA. Have it point
to:

c:\winnt\system32\cscript.exe c:\imail\attachmentresponder.vbs

Yes, this uses a WSH shell script. If you're concerned about security,
disable the association of VBS files with WSH and name your script
someting else, like ATTACHMENTRESPONDER.NOHACK. You're passing the
name on the command line, so it will work with whatever name you want.
The text file attached to this message is the framework for the
ATTACHMENTRESPONDER script (you will have to adapt for your domain
name and the actual binary file you want to send, but I think it's
commented well enough to work that out easily). The script's main
function is to parse out the original sender, then launch bcwmail to
send a message back to the sender with the desired file attached.

Write back if you have any difficulties.

Sandy

Todd,

You can use Rules with Program Aliases to do this kind of work by
passing the eligible e-mails to them and parsing the text to extract
the sender and return a preset attachment.

Did I say *I* have done this exact thing? Nope, not yet. I'll work up
a demo tomorrow if I can grab a minute. Without a doubt, though, it
can be done.

Actually, why don't you write back if you want to go ahead with this

Hi all. I got a bat file and a pif file as attachments today. I've noticed
that everyone here uses quotes in the filename=.*\.extension and
name=.*\.extension rules.

That's because most mail clients use the quotes, which allows for long file
names to be used.

By the way, my wife also got a pif and her's didn't have the quotes in
them either.

That could well be because the Sircam virus uses its own SMTP functions to
send out the E-mail. It likely uses a plain vanilla method of creating
the E-mail and sending it.

in them either.

That could well be because the Sircam virus uses its own SMTP
functions to send out the E-mail. It likely uses a plain vanilla
method of creating the E-mail and sending it.

So, it's probably best to do what I've done and duplicate all my
rules without the quotes, eh?

Re: [IMail Forum] Attachments getting past my rules

2001-07-21 Thread R. Scott Perry

Hi all. I got a bat file and a pif file as attachments today. I've
noticed that everyone here uses quotes in the filename=.*\.extension
and name=.*\.extension rules.

That's because most mail clients use the quotes, which allows for long
file names to be used.

So, it's probably best to do what I've done and duplicate all my rules
without the quotes, eh?

That's what I would recommend. That way, you are covered either way. And,
make sure to use name= and not filename= (since name= will catch
both), as both formats are sometimes used. If you want to get carried
away, you can also do uuencoded attachments (searching the archive of this
list will bring up how to do it).

Just tested this and found that the message came through with no problems,
although why someone would want to email an mp3 vs actual file transfer is
beyond me.

My guess is that either you have a delivery rule problem or the message in
question is larger than what is permitted by the mailbox in question. The
latter is the most likely cause of your problem.

Have you checked to see if you have a filter set up that might account for

I've never heard of IMail deleting any E-mail.

That isn't the fault of either the local or remote mail server. It's a fault of
either the sending mail client (incorrectly formatting the MIME headers) or receiving
mail client (incorrectly interpreting the MIME headers). If you are using web
messaging as your mail client, it can often get confused with the MIME headers in
complex MIME messages.

I have one user who has tried to use the Web interface to IMail (6.06) while
working at home. If someone using plain-text format email sends him an
attachment, no problem. But if they are using HTML format mail, whatever
attachment they send is not visible. He is using IE 5.5 on Windows. I
couldn't find this in the knowledgebase or documentation. I am not able to

Re: [IMail Forum] attachments left in spool

2001-03-23 Thread Scott Perry

Why am I getting attached files left in my /spool?

Attached files (.exe and such) should only appear in the spool when uploaded with web
messaging. These attachments will normally be deleted when the E-mail is sent.
However, they seem to stick around if the user aborts the upload. Often, this will
happen with a large upload (say a meg or two), and you will see several copies in
there of varying lengths -- they keep trying to upload, but stop halfway through.

From my experience, you can delete these files as soon as you see them, but to be
safe you might want to wait at least a couple of days.

David,

Web MSG could leave the attachment there, if it cannot be delivered to all

cause IMail to not accept the message, so there should not be any

Are you using IE 5 or 5.5 for your browser?

If the attachment is binary, I have been able to get the following
to work. Open the file from its location instead of saving it, and
THEN save it to a file.

I have had to do a work around using yahoo! with 5.5 as well.
You have to do the same thing. If you try to just save the
attachment, it tries to save it as some html file.

Hi all,

We went live this morning and I have discovered problems with
attachments. The problem seems to be mail clients are set to MIME
but if I use webmessaging, the attachment is a binary type and it
garbage. If I send the attachment via webmessaging, all is well.

Is there a solution for this?

Re: [IMail Forum] attachments being corrupted

2001-01-15 Thread Scott Perry

Occasionally when I send out emails with Word 97 attachments, they
are not recognizable by the recipient as valid Word document types.
Mail client being used is (OE5 - sender) and (OE4 - recipient),
 both running Win '98.

It's highly unlikely that IMail would be doing anything that would cause this
behavior. If the message was sent using web messaging, it's possible that it could
have been encoded incorrectly. But, for messages passing through IMail, it shouldn't
be touching the body of the message.

I searched the KB but was unable to find any reference to this rather
bizarre problem.

I would search the KB -- Microsoft's. http://msdn.microsoft.com. I'm guessing that
the recipient's computer needs some tweaking (or un-doing of some tweaking that had
been done before!). Although, if this only happens occasionally to the same
recipient, you're probably dealing with a more elusive problem.

If it doesn't appear to be the recipient's computer that is at fault, you could have
IMail copy E-mail for that user, and then take a look at the .MBX file to see if there
is anything unusual in the E-mail.

Re: [IMail Forum] attachments with every mail I send ????

There are a couple ways to do it. The least expensive (dollar wise), but
usually least reliable, is to keep updating your filters for the latest
virus attachment names. The second option is to buy an SMTP-based virus
scanner. Finally,
you can look into our Declude Virus product for IMail

Just an FYI - I believe are also some ASP-type companies who will do
virus/content scanning for you. Basically, outsourcing MimeSweeper and AV.
For smaller shops, maybe an option.

Does IMail WebMail not handle certain attachments right? Or is this another

Re: [IMail Forum] attachments appearing on every message

2000-08-23 Thread scott.perry

Sounds like an Outlook issue. It would be really, really difficult for IMail to
accidentally do that.

It may be some sort of HTML issue, where it is sending an HTML (or RTF or whatever)
copy of the message, and then adding a text version for good measure? Usually, E-mail
clients send out a text version as a MIME attachment (although the receiving E-mail
client should know that it is the same as the HTML, and should display one or the
other and not display either as an attachment).

I've got a weird situation where attachments are now appearing on all my
outgoing messages. The text attachment is a duplicate of the message which
I am sending. I am using Outlook 2000 and have not touched the settings for
over 4 months.

The weird thing is I have not touched the setting on my IMail Server
either?? I have applied the latest update last week but I had no problems
afterward.

Anyone ever had my problem?

RE: [IMail Forum] Attachments

2000-07-04 Thread ron

I have a small problem, I have loaded Dusty Carden's
 webtemplates onto my
Imail 6 server, all is ok except that when we try and open an
 attachment it
opens a page saying attachment not found ??

If I download it via eudora etc the attachments are fine ??
 Thanks
 Gary

Gary,

This from Dusty's site (http://www.lynndust.com/imail/templates.asp):

"Currently there are two styles of Templates available on this site.
Both are for Imail 5.x. These will not work as-is with Imail version
6.x."

You can see the various flavors v6 templates at
http://www.ipswitch.com/Products/IMail_Server/template.html, and demo
ours at http://mail.hksi.net.

Ron

Re: [IMail Forum] Attachments error

2000-06-29 Thread Peter Coe

Well... Lets see, have the user upgrade to Netscape, or a MS Outlook. If they are
using AOL they some mimes may work and others
not. Of course if they were using AOL they probably would not get the notice they
would just get garbage. There is nothing
that can be done on the server end. The user is using a plain text email application.
Tell the user to get a different email
program.

 Hi guys,

One of our user have a problem when he receives some mails with pictures attached.
The message that appears on the mail it:

 ---
This mail message contains standard MIME attachments. If you see this
note, your e-mail program does not support MIME. You may need a MIME-
compliant mail reader to read any non-text attachments in this message.
 ---

What this can be solved? Do I need to implement something in Imail Server?

 Thanks for your help

This
is important... HOW did they read the message, with the web client, OE, or
O2K?
