[LincolnTalk] Tennis lessons

2023-05-18 Thread Christi Damico
Looking for tennis lessons for my rising 8th grader, July - Mid August
timeframe. If you are an advanced high schooler looking to make $, and could do
lessons on courts on Lincoln, that would be ideal!

Re: [LincolnTalk] Upcoming Family Drag Show

2023-05-18 Thread Velvet Vision
Hi all,

as the person that sparked this conversation I thought I’d quickly discuss
this. In the current climate that I, a young queer person, am faced with I
feel the need to not only put first the customs of drag culture first but
also my personal safety. It is drag culture to have a drag name and have
that name be the main or only name used when referring to you in drag or
your drag career as a whole. I personally keep my boy (out of drag) name
private because I want that to be reserved for my private, out of drag
life. Not only that, but the world that we are living in currently isn’t
safe for people like me. Drag gives me the confidence to act up against the
hatred towards my community in a way that my boy self can’t most times. My
community is not safe right now and using my drag persona for public events
is my security blanket in this very scary time. I appreciate those in this
discussion standing up for or understanding me and my situation. If you
have issues with me or my show I understand it isn’t for everyone but i ask
you to be considerate of me and my community. It is your choice whether to
attend my show or not, it is totally up to you. It doesn’t matter to me if
you don’t like me and what I do but I ask you to be respectful of it as I
am to you. Don’t like drag? Don’t come! It’s as simple as that. If you
don’t like something that is your prerogative, but please let those who
enjoy it do so. Thank you all for the positive feedback and support and I
am so excited for the show.

Yours,
Velvet

I love this response, *and* I think it's important to protect the anonymity

Re: [LincolnTalk] Upcoming Family Drag Show

2023-05-18 Thread Michelle Barnes via Lincoln
 Dear Claire and LincolntTalk,
Someone privately, and respectfully, engaged with me about my below post and
made me realize that in essence I may have been overprotective of the 16 year
old and/or may have assumed the worst about Claire’s intent with her post. As a
result, I want to formally apologize to both Claire and the LT community for
that. I certainly don’t want to pile on anybody on LT, as I firmly believe that
we need to hold each other up in our community, regardless of who we are and
what our differences may be. I also should have known better than to
effectively assume the worst. For civil, supportive and progressive discourse,
I believe we need to assume good intent until proven otherwise. I’d like to
contribute to and perpetrate civil discourse, and not galvanize anyone to pile
on somebody, and it seems my post may have had the latter impact which I regret.
Thank you,Michelle BarnesSGR

Re: [LincolnTalk] Getting to Zero: #6 The Builder's Perspective - Green Building and Restoration

2023-05-18 Thread Scott L. Rodman
Tonight's discussion with Mark Doughty and Colin Flavin is a great
opportunity for anyone interested in renovating their home, addressing air
sealing and insulation issues, and gaining a better understanding of the
many issues that are being addressed today to make homes more efficient,
reduce the carbon footprint, and have better air quality. Colin's
expertise as an architect who has unique experience with mid-century modern
homes and a great sense of the need for preservation and Mark Doughty's
amazing history of work in this area leading his renowned contracting firm
provides a wonderful opportunity to hear from two leading experts. We are
lucky to be able to have this event as a part of the series that the Green
Energy Committee and its CFREE sub-committee have been working on for a
while.

The zoom meeting will start at 7:00pm tonight. You can register at the

[LincolnTalk] Radon detectors - now available at the library

2023-05-18 Thread Scott L. Rodman
A number of electronic radon detectors/monitors are now at the Lincoln
Library and available to be borrowed. These are the AirtThings
Correntium models and are quite simple to use.

The EPA suggests that people without a radon mitigation system in their
homes check their radon levels every year and people with a system check
every two years. Other than those who have previously found that they have
a radon problem, there seem to be very few people I have talked with who
are doing this.

What has been clear with my loans of quite a few of these devices before
the library took this on was that the vast majority of the people who
borrowed them found levels of radon in their homes, largely in basement
areas, that were well above the level of 4 where the EPA strongly
recommends mitigation. We have seen levels of 10-20 quite often and up to
325. Even that very high number was successfully mitigated with the
addition of a system that pulls the radon through a fan, out of the house,
and into the air. Radon levels also vary based on the weather, season,
whether you have windows open, and other factors.

I only learned about radon and the concerns that it presents when there was
a comment from a former owner of the house we bought in Lincoln that the
house had a radon problem. We tested, put in monitors, and became alarmed
at the level of 16 that we saw. New homes in Middlesex County are required
to have passive radon systems that allow a fan to be added quite easily to
remove the radon from the home if it is ever high. It is simple to test!
The monitors I like best for ongoing monitoring are the ones that connect
over wifi and provide continuous readings and the data is provided and
charted.

If anyone sees a high level and wants to confirm the readings from the
electronic monitors with the older carbon tests, they are free from the
state. I added a number of links below to information about radon, these
monitors, some FAQs, and how to get the free tests from the state.

[LincolnTalk] INF: Agricultural Commission Newsletter is Fantastic!

2023-05-18 Thread Lynne Smith
I just spent a few minutes reading the Farming News, delivered to all
residents. It is a compendium of information on farms in Lincoln. We are
fortunate to live in a place where the land and its bounty is valued. Thank
you to all the members of the Ag Commission for finding time between farm
chores to send us the professional and informative update, complete with photos
of veggies and livestock.
