It’s not Christmas, but I work at First Parish in Cambridge, and we offer
dinner every Tuesday, if she wants to volunteer there. It’s much needed for
folks in Harvard Square to get a good meal. You can reach out to me if you want
more info.

Hi LT,

See below for a list of things these immigrants need. If you have something to

Re: [LincolnTalk] the Rural land foundation and the Housing Choice Act

2023-11-01 Thread Jennifer Goodman
I agree with the most recent post on Civico. I live at Oriole Landing and have
since they first developed. It was pretty disgusting how they flipped the place
immediately, and I would like to know what the profit was on that $32M sale.
They really cut corners in developing the units; maintenance is always
commenting on that, and I’ve had one problem after another from the original
development (the property manager has been generous in fixing everything). And
if left to their own devices, without the town weighing in, they would have
built 120 units, not the 60 that are currently here with the lovely
landscaping. Please do not allow them to develop another one without going
through town meeting and all the other approvals we used the first time around.
They need a lot of supervision. Also, 10% affordable housing is ridiculously
low. (And remember, “affordable” still means the units are $2000+ per month.)
Gatekeep this one for sure.

Re: [LincolnTalk] story on the housing crisis, affordable housing & zoning

2023-10-18 Thread Jennifer Goodman
A clarification. Affordable housing excludes low income renters. “Affordable”
housing denotes middle income, 80% of average, which is well above “low
income.” For affordable housing, there is a window with a lower limit to
qualify, as well as an upper limit. The range for one person is approximately
between 60k and 80k annually. It is NOT the same as “low income” housing. For
example, someone making 40k per year wouldn’t qualify for “affordable” because
they would be earning too little. So Lincoln might think about creating some
low income housing also.

Re: [LincolnTalk] To the cyclist who was almost hit on Lincoln Road by a School Van

2023-08-31 Thread Jennifer Goodman
It was a tufts medical professor who died in Newton. My friend saw the
accident. A UPS truck hit him.

It’s awful, and no one feels okay about it. I don’t think the drivers are
horrible drivers; it’s just very hard to manage narrow roads with no shoulder
and severe curves, with cyclists. No one wants to hit a cyclist. It’s not a
perfectly safe thing to do, riding a bike on the roads around here, sadly, and
as a conscientious driver, I hate a day when all the cyclists are out - I pray
my way through Lincoln and Concord. I wish they had dedicated bike lanes. How
awful for the drivers also; that UPS driver who killed the Tufts professor must
be incredibly distraught right now. I have compassion for the whole situation.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Snail Mail in Lincoln

2023-07-26 Thread Jennifer Goodman
Now that we’re on the topic of Lincoln mail, I've had several letters, some
with checks, not delivered at all. About 5 in all since the beginning of the
year that I can be certain were sent to me and I never received. I’m sure there
were more I didn’t receive but wouldn’t have been waiting for. I also routinely
receive mail for random other people in Lincoln. This has been going on since I
first moved here in 2003. They are so bad at delivering the mail to the right
people in this town, which seems like a basic requirement for a postal service?
What’s the best way to address this with the PO? I find it hard to imagine a
scenario where they address such a systemic problem. I looked into renting a PO
Box in Concord, where they actually deliver all the mail to addresses
correctly, consistently, but it’s about $300 per year, so that’s not worth it.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Bike instructor

2023-07-24 Thread Jennifer Goodman
I just heard about this place in a parent group, Bicycle Riding School, in
Somerville. Apparently they’re so good that it only takes one or two lessons to
teach a five year old. Non-profit, lots of experience, sounds really cool. And
they teach adults also.

Hello,

I teach children at the Medfield Unitarian Church, and we’re in need of a child

they’re trying to get rid of, please let me know! (I gave one away myself 3

Re: [LincolnTalk] Help with Rosemary plant

2022-12-14 Thread Jennifer Goodman
My rosemary stays green when I bring it in for the winter. But it doesn’t like
temperature shocks. It’s a Mediterranean plant, which has a temperate climate.
So if I wait too late in the fall to bring it in, it doesn’t do well. It also
doesn’t like over/under watering. I let it dry out so it doesn’t get moldy then
water it fairly well. It loves the sun. Also plant food would probably be good
for it, but be careful what you give it if you’re going to cook with it,
toxicity-wise. The whiteness could either be fungus or a dying plant. Usually
you can see the fungus; it looks furry or bumpy. If it’s fungus, I would toss
it before it spreads to other plants, but others might have techniques for
soaking it in something to get rid of the fungus. You could try tea tree oil in
water and spray it on aggressively. It should be non-toxic to the plant, and it
kills microbes. Good luck! I love rosemary...

Re: [LincolnTalk] Corrected - Trail Use Proposal - not too late to postpone and impact on walkers and nature

2022-06-01 Thread Jennifer Goodman
No one’s arguing whether bikes should exist in our town. But Amsterdam is a
city. Mt Misery is the woods. Let’s keep bikes on sidewalks and roads, as they
are in Boston. It does feel dangerous to me to have them on the trails. When
I’m walking with bikes around, I hear the ‘on your left’ about a nanosecond
before they are on top of me, and it's impossible to react in time. In what way
is this an improvement? And will all the dogs at Mt Misery react fast enough,
or in the right direction to get out of the way? Sounds like a mess waiting to
happen. Especially if it’s “mostly kids." And I thought the ticks were the
biggest challenge about a walk at Mt Misery. Well, maybe it’s aptly named after
all?

Re: [LincolnTalk] Seeking Violin Teacher for Adult Beginner

My daughter loves her teacher, Andrea Lieberherr Douglass, 617-818-5906. She’s
been going to her since she was 8; she’s 23 now. Andrea is very skilled, and
she's a lovely person. She teaches through encouragement and enthusiasm. Some
of the other options were a bit scary… Andrea is in Cambridge on the Arlington
line, so convenient to Route 2 for Lincoln people.

And I support extending incompetence of all kinds, if it makes you happy!

Re: [LincolnTalk] movers

2022-01-13 Thread Jennifer Goodman
Piece by Piece also really disappointed me. In the estimate they said they were
going to wrap my furniture, but they didn’t, and they scratched it up. Then
they said I hadn’t gotten insurance to cover any damage by the movers. They
sent a much too small truck and then took tons of time trying to puzzle
everything in. They broke mirrors, they scratched hand-made woodwork, they
dropped a piece of sculpture after I had told them how to lift it. Their claims
process was long, and I was refused. I fought it out with them, and eventually
they refunded me for some of the extra time they had charged, but not the
damage.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Where to find Binax

Thanks for trying, but neither of these has any tests available, except an $85
one for one test from Amazon. The site from Louis looks like it does, but when
you click through, Walgreens is out of them. The site from David is also out.

[LincolnTalk] Seamstress needed!

2021-10-25 Thread Jennifer Goodman
I’m looking for recommendations for a seamstress. Currently, I have several
curtains I need hemmed, and down the road I also have clothes I need altered.
The dry cleaners charge a fortune for hemming. Any ideas? Thanks!

Re: [LincolnTalk] Black mold

2021-10-21 Thread Jennifer Goodman
I had the same problem, discovered in September. Yuck. It was on everything.
Tea tree oil diluted in water in a spray bottle kills mold and fungus, and so
does white vinegar. (Unless you like the smell of bleach.) I scrubbed and
sprayed all of my coats, clothes, and shoes before washing, and I sprayed the
tea tree oil on the carpets and the bottoms of all of my upholstered furniture
preventatively. And in the closets and dresser drawers, kitchen cabinets, etc.
What a project. Good luck!

Re: [LincolnTalk] Remedy for Browning Pine Needles?

2021-10-14 Thread Jennifer Goodman
It may be due to the extreme rain we’ve had this season. Mold and all kinds of
things are growing, and the trees don’t have the chance to dry out and clear
the parasites. They may do better when the other leaves in the woods fall and
the sun can really get to them finally.

Re: [LincolnTalk] concern for the diversity of our town, but economic and racially

2021-07-27 Thread Jennifer Goodman
Developers are usually required to set aside a certain number of units as
“affordable” in order to be approved by the towns. At Oriole Landing, an
“affordable” 2-bedroom unit is about $2000/month (market rate is much higher).
Very different from low-income. An individual earning $30,000 per year would be
about $35,000 short of qualifying for “affordable," as they must earn at least
approximately $65,000 to qualify and ensure that they would be able to meet the
rent.
