(again, from some search there seems to be some compilers C → java bytecode),
and then create a native BBOS client to libpurple (because Pidgin per se is GTK
based, and this one you sure not gonna run on BBOS). Not sure anybody have done
that though.

Re: Help with Wox Pidgin plugin

2022-12-11 Thread Eion Robb
Hi Jakub,

I've not used wox before, but looking at the source code for that wox
module it looks like you create a hard-coded list of XMPP contacts in a
contact.json file which looks like [{"name":"internal name", "alias":
"friendly name", "email": "xmpp address"}...] and then it calls an xmpp:
URI handler to send the message, assuming that Pidgin is installed as the
system XMPP handler?

Not the greatest workflow to be honest, and won't work with your Telegram
use-case. Something that used the Pidgin Dbus API to lookup current
contacts, and handled more than just XMPP would be cooler :)

Cheers,
Eion

SaaS/digital marketing channels like SaaSHub, AppSumo, ProductHunt,
Google/Facebook Ads and so on.

Re: How to log out and create new Pidgin account

2022-08-20 Thread Eion Robb
Hi there,

You can add multiple accounts for pidgin to use at the same time through
the Accounts->Manage Accounts screen. Then click the Add button to add the
new account. This also lets you merge buddies from two different accounts
in your buddy list. Eg you might have a buddy on both Facebook and Discord,
if you merge them together then the conversation history will also be merged

If you're still getting notifications that you aren't expecting to see, it
might be because you're closing pidgin instead of quitting it. The easiest
way to do so is to right click on the Pidgin system tray icon (you might
have to expand the system tray as windows likes to collapse it by default)
and choose Quit. There's also a Quit option from the Buddies menu from the
buddy list, but you'd need the system tray to open the buddy list

Eion

When I open Pidgin and click on Join a Chat, it only shows my original

Also, after I close Pidgin, it often keeps reopening to show me a

Hello,

If you mean the Pidgin website then I would have thought you could cite
it in the same away as any other website. I presume that your
educational establishment has a formal citation standard which should
cover web citations.

If you mean a message you have received via Pidgin then personally I'd
cite this in the same way as one would cite a private letter or personal
phone call.

What branch are you on? Bitbucket removed mercurial support multiple years
ago.. Or more specifically, where did you clone pidgin from? The canonical
repository is at https://keep.imfreedom.org/pidgin/pidgin/ and the default
branch is up to date and pointing to the proper talkatu repository at

Re: Problem building pidgin (talkatu)

2022-04-03 Thread Konstantin Kharlamov
Regarding the error: it is trying to fetch talkatu repo, but the repo was
deleted, which is why you're getting a 404. This really should be reported to
the developers. It is trivial to fix: just replace (I presume in meson.build,
but am not sure, you might want to grep for the string over the sources) the

https://bitbucket.com/pidgin/talkatu

with

https://keep.imfreedom.org/talkatu/talkatu/

that's the new URL of the repo.

With that said: I am not sure you're really doing the correct thing. You see,
you're trying to build a 3.0 version of Pidgin, that's the development version,
which AFAIK has major changes to plugin API. Latest stable Pidgin release is
2.14.8.

Is there any particular reason you're trying to build Pidgin from sources? It is
usually in repositories of all distros, so there should be no reason in doing
that other than wanting to do the Pidgin development (not even a plugin
development, that one doesn't require building Pidgin from sources).

What's the run-time dependency trying to be resolved here?

All I had to do so far, was install gtk3 and the meson build environment.

Can you transfer a file using IRC ?

I tried sending a word file via irc using Pidgin and could not send the
file. I was able to attach the file and the recipient received a
notification and was able to accept and set the download location but the
file would not start to upload. Here is what I saw in debug window:

Sending:

Network:Listening on port 0

Network:skipping external port mapping.

Any help would be appreciated.

As far as I can tell, all the Twitter plugins are third party, so you
should seek support from whoever provided the plugins you are using.
The message will be from a plugin, not from Pidgin itself.

I was hoping someone more familiar with this aspect of Pidgin was going
to answer, but really you need help from someone you trust, as this
relates to the mechanisms that are used to ensure you are really talking
to the server, not to an impostor who is then forwarding things to the
server.

It appears that only IRC and XMPP use this. I'm guessing that you are
trying to access an IRC server run by voxi.ru, but if it is actually an
XMPP one, please let us know.

The could mean:

1) someone is pretending to be the server and hoping you won't check
properly or will override security warnings;

2) Pidgin never had the CA certificate needed to verify the server - was
it working before;

3) The server has updated its server certificate which is now signed by
a new CA certificate (you may want to check you have the latest Pidgin
and have current security updates for your OS - this might be the case
if they were using a Lets Encrypt certificate, as there was a recent,
relatively chaotic, retirement of one of their CA certificates;

4) The server has a certificate that is signed by an intermediate
certificate, which they haven't sent to you, and which you didn't
already have.

There will be differences in how to add a missing CA certificate on your
side, depending on the OS, so you should tell us what that is, and as
you shouldn't take information from lightly used mailing lists at face
value, you really need someone you can trust to make sure that you don't
compromise your machine by adding a certificate that you shouldn't trust
to the extent necessary for your personal security needs.

For background on the concepts referred to above,
<https://support.dnsimple.com/articles/what-is-ssl-certificate-chain/>

Notifications Are Not Working - Pidgin 2.13

2021-10-22 Thread Mark Whittaker
My company uses Pidgin in a Citrix environment. I recently got a new laptop
running Windows 10 Pro. My previous laptop was also Windows 10. Pidgin is not
on my laptop but is in our Citrix environment which runs Windows Server 2019.
I am logging into the same CItrix environment with my new laptop as with my old
laptop. With my old laptop in Citrix, the Pidgin sounds worked fine. But
since getting my new laptop, my Pidgin sounds don't work when I receive or send
a message. Other audible messages work in Citrix, such as the notification
when I get an email or a meeting invitation, and the sound works when playing
videos in Citrix, but Pidgin remains silent. One strange thing I have noticed
is that if I send or receive a Pidgin message at the same time as an email
coming in, the Pidgin "badonk" sound plays on top of the email notification
sound. If I immediately send another message right after that, silence again.
I have ensured that the Sounds When Converstion Has Focus is checked, Enable
Sounds = Always, Play is checked for Message Received, Message Received Begins
Conversation, Message Sent, You Talk In Chat, Others Talk In Chat are all
checked. At the bottom of the Sound Events screen, the word (default) is in
the box. If I hit Preview, it plays a sound that is like a dull tone that
fades in and out over a couple of seconds. It doesn't play the "badonk" sound
that I am used to. When I click Browse to look for other sounds, I don't see
anything in the folder that comes up. I'm missing messages fairly often and
have not had any luck working with our local IT who setup the laptop. Any
ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark Whittaker

Pidgin for JMP.Chat VoIP on PinePhone

2021-10-12 Thread rherr
Attn: Pidgin Support

I installed Pidgin on my PinePhone (Mobian Bookworm OS) and it looks good. I
had to scale it in the Gnome Settings panel to see everything and I have a
mouse and keyboard hub, too. I could probably use it just fine without mouse
and keyboard with some practice.

I have a JMP.Chat VoIP account (XMPP) and all my telephone contacts loaded
successfully. I made a call to a local department store to test and was able to
use the DTMF pad as well. The call was successful. JMP.Chat has a configuration
account that can make a call back to the phone. I tried it, but there was no
reaction or notification. I saw just the text message in the chat box that a
call would be made.

I'm excited where all of this technology could be going and I will leave Pidgin
installed on my PinePhone. Do you know of anyone that has been able to receive
calls using JMP.Chat on a PinePhone or have suggestions for settings?

Thanks,

Rodger Herrington

You are missing rather important information, which makes me think you
don't really understand what Pidgin is. Most users of Pidgin do not use
services for which a phone number has any meaning at all. You need to

I assume by free, you mean except for what you are already paying to
access the internet, and the references to extra stuff and configuration
refer to stuff not included by your OS supplier and configuration you
wouldn't have to do to use the internet in the first place, which are
somewhat variable items. What services you get as part of the standard
bundle, with the OS, depends on what the OS developer things the market
wants, as moderated, by any commercial interests they may have in
operating infrastructure.

The biggest obstacle to point to point operation is actually that most
people don't have a first class connection to the internet, but rather
go through network address translation with an unstable public address.

In the early days of the internet, email would have provided this, and
some early mass market ISPs (e.g. Demon in the UK) worked in a way where
their customers had a first class connection to the internet, including
for email. However, with the mass market, came a move to storing
mailboxes centrally and consumer mail programs only having second class
access, using a single relay for all outbound traffic, and sucking
incoming traffic from centralised mailboxes, rather than sending
outgoing mail directly to the recipient's system, and accepting pushes
of incoming mail direct from the sender. The advent of spam supported
this trend, as people started not to trust point to point routed email.

SIP, as used for VoIP, and also capable of text messaging, is similar.
The protocol is quite capable of working point to point, but nearly
everyone uses it via an internet telephony service provider, and uses
phone numbers for addressing, not full user@domain addresses. SIP
implementations do tend to have some support for address translation,
but can have trouble if the public address isn't stable.

Im not sure that your ignorance is excusable. Its right on the front page

to communicate
from computer to computer - but you do need some basic skills.

Re: Pidgin crashes. OTR session with xabber client!

2021-07-08 Thread Eion Robb
Hi there,

Unfortunately this looks like 2 different crashes in libraries that Pidgin
uses but doesn't support:

   1. There's a crash in Pango (text rendering library) trying to double
free some memory. You might want to try running Pidgin through valgrind to
see where the memory is being free'd twice. You'll need to send this one
up to the Pango guys to try fix.
   2. There's a crash in the OTR plugin, something to do with an error when
reallocating memory. Unfortunately Pidgin doesn't support this 3rd party
library, so you'll need to send this one to them.

To help with both of these issues, you might want to recompile all
libraries in the backtrace with debug symbols, (libpango and libgcrypt in
particular), and maybe refer to
https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/GetABacktrace about how to extract a more
meaningful backtrace that can reveal a bit more about what's happening
behind the scenes to cause those crashes.

Cheers,
Eion

Pidgin 2.14.5 has been released!

2021-06-04 Thread Gary Kramlich
Whoops we missed May, but hopefully you all enjoy this kind of rushed
release!

Why was it rushed? Well a certain unnamed broker of software
vulnerabilities posted a bounty for vulnerabilities in Pidgin. Thus we
quickly ran a bunch of static analysis tools and patched everything we
could find.

We have no reason to believe that 2.14.5 is any safer than 2.14.4 as the
issues the static analysis found should not be exploitable. However, we
didn’t want to take a chance and leave them in.

We also changed the default value of the Enable automatic router port
forwarding preference from on to off. We suggest you disable this
setting as well if you’re upgrading and you don’t typically send files
directly to other users.

For the first time in a long time we updated our bundled TLS
Certificates. This should hopefully avoid some certificate warnings for
some users but there’s a good chance some third party protocol plugins
users might still see them.

Finally, with all the events regarding the Freenode and Libera IRC
networks, we decided to change the default IRC server from
irc.freenode.net to irc.libera.chat. We will maintain a presence on both
networks for as long as we have users there.

The complete changelog for this release is the following:

General:
* Updated our bundled certificates to the latest version from Mozilla.
  (RR #722) (PIDGIN-17535) (Gary Kramlich)
* Made the project scan-build clean. (RR #692-705, #707-714, #716-#719)
  (Gary Kramlich)
* Fixed some of Gary's scan-build fixes that were a bit verbose. (RR #715)
  (Elliott Sales de Andrade)
* Disabled UPnP and NAT-PMP by default for new user. (RR #706) (Gary
  Kramlich)

IRC:
* Changed the default server to irc.libera.chat. (RR #675) (Gary Kramlich)

Windows Specific Changes:
* Fixed the installer not running when Mandatory ASLR was turned on.
  (RR #721) (PIDGIN-17524) (Gary Kramlich)

Thanks,

RE: Pidgin WIBNI or option I'm just not finding

This still isn't working. Is there a secret to configuring it?

As usual, Eion is my hero! Thank you sir. It's installed and configured, I
think--the "Apply hiding rules to buddies" is what I want, I assume?

Of course I'll know that it's working only because I won't see messages that
might have otherwise seen--sorta trying to prove a negative...

Sorry about that. Behind the scenes there's two different buddy lists on
Hangouts and they end up fighting with each other when the account reconnects

As a workaround, you can use
https://github.com/EionRobb/pidgin-ignore-nickchange which suppresses those
messages

There really isn't anything super appealing in 2.14.2, 2.14.3, or
2.14.4, so not upgrading is probably fine. That said, we won't be
supporting Windows XP anymore as it's been out of support from it's
manufacture for users and we do not have the resources to make sure it
continues to function properly.

Thanks,

You need a win32-dev directory that contains all of our dependencies.
The easiest way to get that right now is from
https://data.imfreedom.org/pidgin/win32-dev.7z

Pidgin 2 on windows doesn't use autotools. You build it using `make -f
Makefile.mingw` in the root of the source code.

There's a bunch of nonsense in pidgin2 that makes this work, serious you
don't want to dig into it and we replaced most if not all of it in
pidgin 3 already.

Pidgin3 under msys2 currently requires msys2 packages and will not be
distribute-able outside of msys2. We're working on a solution for that,
but limited resources makes that difficult.

Re: Problem building Pidgin.

2021-05-05 Thread DAVID MAY
I also tried building Pidgin 2.14.4 with MSYS2. Documentation, such as
it is, assumes a Cygwin environment but suggests MSYS (not MSYS2) can be
used with "tweaks" to the build scripts.

Anyway running configure results in the following error:

...
checking for inet_aton... no
checking for inet_aton in -lresolv... no
configure: error: inet_aton not found

Looking at the Pidgin 2.14.4 source code there are multiple bare
inet_aton() calls - with no #ifdefs nor macro magic to substitute a
Win32 alternative.

Which suggests there is no way this thing is going to build with MSYS2.

The reason I tried building Pidgin 3.0 is that the documentation, such
as it is, claims to build with MSYS2 - and indeed a talkatu standalone
project does build cleanly out of the box even though the Pidgin project
fails to build a talkatu sub-project.

Btw, it might help if you say what exactly are you trying to achieve. You see,
if for example you just want to work on some Pidgin plugin, then I don't think
you need to compile libpurple either. Simply installing Pidgin from installation
binaries for your system should give you libpurple.

Re: Problem building Pidgin.

2021-05-05 Thread Konstantin Kharlamov
Disclaimer: just a random user here.

So, before anything else: I suspect you don't want the latest upstream Pidgin.
You see, latest released version is 2.14.4, and if you want to develop a
libpurple plugin, you better use that one. The 3.0 version was never released,
and devs thinking about releasing it for a long time already. I also think it
might have introduced some incompatibilities (since it is a new major version),
so, anyway, I don't think you currently want it.

---

With that said, if you are really interested in latest upstream libpurple, then…
Regarding the error: I looked at `meson.build` file, it tries to find the
talkatu subproject in the system (by using pkg-config, I suppose like `pkg-
config --cflags --libs talkatu` or something similar), fails at that, then
searches "talkatu" directory in `subprojects/` subdirectory, fails again. Idk
what results in the error regarding "Mercurial" though (does Meson try to
download a subproject? I never knew it does that), but I suppose if you clone
`talkatu` into `subprojects/` sub-directory, the error will go away.

But you don't need all that since you only want libpurple. You can safely
disable `gtkui`. That is, execute something like `meson build -Dgtkui=false` (if
you look at paragraph with talkatu dependency, you'll see it is only checked
when gtkui is enabled).

Problem building Pidgin.

2021-05-05 Thread DAVID MAY
Hello,

Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but this is the first time I have
worked with Pidgin.

I am experiencing an error when I attempt to build Pidgin 3.0 on Windows
with MSYS2. Actually, I am only interested in working with libpurple
but it does not seem to be possible to build libpurple as a standalone
project.

I cloned the Pidgin 3.0 Mercurial repository. However meson.build for
Pidgin 3.0 fails with an error message which states that Mercurial is
not installed. This cannot be correct: I can clone the talkatu
Mercurial repository using MSYS2 Mercurial; Meson builds talkatu as a
standalone project; the build products talkatu pass all the tests and
the demo program works.

The full Pidgin 3.0 meson.build output I see is this:

Looking here:

https://pidgin.im/help/windows/#can-i-run-pidgin-on-windows-98-windows-me-windows-2000-windows-xp-or-windows-vista

I see:

Can I run Pidgin on Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP,
or Windows Vista?

It is possible using old versions of Pidgin and GTK, but we do not
support this. Don’t do it.

This page is from 2019, so it seems that for at least that long new
Pidgin versions have not been supported on XP.

Pidgin falling over?

it's open 24x7.

Pidgin WIBNI or option I'm just not finding

2021-04-14 Thread Phil Smith III
When my ISP is flaky, as happens from time to time, it'll disconnect and
reconnect repeatedly. When it does so, I wind up with IM windows full of
sequences like this:

(4:02:44 AM)

106452616995561063094 is now known as xx.

(4:02:45 AM)

106452616995561063094 is now known as YYY.

(7:14:00 AM)

106452616995561063094 is now known as xx.

(7:14:00 AM)

106452616995561063094 is now known as YYY.

(7:36:57 AM)

106452616995561063094 is now known as xx.

Is there a way to suppress those? These appear for Google Hangouts users,
though not all such, which is odd. All are aliased; I'd have said they were
all set up the same, but something appears to be different.

In case anyone wonders, the problem is that this noise makes it easy to miss
actual IMs of significance (typically from my wife, which is Bad).

Thanks for any suggestions!

Greetings programs!

Today we have released Pidgin 2.14.2! You can find it at
https://sourceforge.net/projects/pidgin/files/Pidgin/2.14.2/.
Unfortunately we can no longer us Bintray as they are no longer hosting
files so SourceForge is the only place to get it!

version 2.14.2 (04/01/2021):
* Fix a build issue when compiling with gstreamer but without voice
and
  video. (RR #25)
* Enable cyrus-sasl by default. (RR #26)
* Fix an issue with opening link in Firefox. (RR #503)
(PIDGIN-16589)
* Fix a regression from 2.14.0 where extra whitespace would be
displayed
when pasting elements from HTML. (RR #504) (PIDGIN-17437)

* Require Python 3 for generating the D-Bus bindings. (RR #550)

* Fix an issue where pasting 's and other HTML elements would

eventually lead to a crash. (RR #514) (PIDGIN-17446)

Thanks!

No Stephen, you can not remove your email from public groups as they

You can't log in to Pidgin; pidgin is just a client. You are getting
the message when logging into you instant messaging account. As you are
posting with an Oracle email address, our assumption would be that that
is the internal instant messaging provided by Oracle to its employees.
People on this peer support mailing list generally are not Oracle
employees, and we have no access to information about Oracle's internal
system, let alone any ability to control it.

The same general principle applies if you are trying to use any other
instant messaging service, as, even though people may know about the
service, they will have no ability to control its behaviour.

This is is a peer support mailing list, for a piece of open source
software. We can give advice, but we cannot look into things. In
particular, we cannot look into Oracle's internal instant messaging
services, as we have no access to them, and can only guess the nature of
them.

It seems to me that your problem lies in connecting to Oracle's internal
server, so you need to contact Oracle's internal people that manage that
server.

Also note that the URL you provided redirects to

We can't help you because we are Pidgin users, who do not work for Oracle, not
the people who support Oracle's internal instant messaging server. Pidgin is
only a client, so simply forwards passwords, etc., to the servers.

We can't help you because we are Pidgin users, who do not work for
Oracle, not the people who support Oracle's internal instant messaging
server. Pidgin is only a client, so simply forwards passwords, etc., to
the servers.

Standard response for Oracle users:

We are advised that people within the Oracle network can use
<http://my.oracle.com/site/git/1591/index.htm> for more information; for
outsiders, like us, it just redirects to the public home page.

Please explain to whoever should be supporting you why you went to the
wrong place, and suggest how they could fix that in future.

AOL have closed down their service, so this will obviously happen if you try to
access them!

If you are actually trying to access Oracle's internal service, please note
that details of this are not in public domain, so you will need to contact your
employer's own IT department, as people on this list do not have the
information needed to help you.

Cannot establish an Audio/Video Call in Pidgin : streaming stopped, reason not-negotiated (-4)

2020-04-27 Thread Alain Knaff
Package: libpurple0
Version: 2.13.0-2+b1

Hi,

This is observed with the pidgin & libpurple included on plain Debian 10.

Whenever I try to establish an audio-video call, I get the following error
boxes:

Call with sip:john@hisdomain.lu failed
Conference error

Media error
Conference error

Call with sip:john@ourdomain.lu failed
Error with your webcam

Media error
Error with your webcam

A small investigation showed that this was due to the gstreamer pipeline
not being able to negotiate a common format.

Originally, this pipeline is

v4l2src --> videoscale --> prpl_video_caps --> tee --> ...

prpl_video_caps is a filter on format (video/x-raw), size and framerate.
The odd thing is that there is nothing in the pipeline before this
filter to adapt format and framerate.

Unfortunately, manipulating the pipeline to also include videoconvert
and videorate before the filter doesn't fix this.

However, changing the prpl_video_caps to not filter on format, but only
on size and framerate and then inserting an extra filter with just the
format after videoconvert does seem to address the issue:

v4l2src --> videoconvert --> formatfilter --> videoscale --> prpl_video_caps
--> tee --> ...

Where formatfilter filters on video/x-raw, and prpl_video_caps now
solely filters on width=[250,352], height=[200,288], framerate=[1/1,20/1]

It is weird, as the simpler configuration (one filter to filter on
everything) does work in gst-launch:

gst-launch-1.0 v4l2src ! videoconvert ! videoscale !
"video/x-raw,width=[250,352],height=[200,288],framerate=[1/1,20/1]" !
xvimagesink

Attached is a log with the error, and also a LD_PRELOADable object to do
the GST pipeline manipulation described above which works around the
issue.

N.B. I initially tried to report this to the TRAC bug reporting system
mentioned at https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/TipsForBugReports but
unfortunately, it didn't let me register an account for doing so:
 Error: Not Found
No handler matched request to /register

Thanks,

Alain

Hi Robert,

It sounds like you're after purple-remote (

handles URI parsing and passing off to Pidgin. Different distros will
include it as part of libpurple, Pidgin, or a separate package.

Pidgin invoked via hyperlink

2020-03-27 Thread Robert Moskowitz

This is for pidgin on Fedora 30 installed from the F30 repo:

This week I started using Pidgin to join the IETF Jabber rooms.

The IETF agenda had nice hyperlinks (see:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/meeting/107/agenda.html)

like:

xmpp:privacyp...@jabber.ietf.org?join

Of course if you look after the session time, these links go away

Firefox does not have anyway to process this hyperlink.  Is there some
plugin that will work?

Of course, I would have to configure that plugin as to what handle to
use, and if I have multiple xmpp servers, which to use for accessing the
room...

Thanks for your help.
