[XeTeX] Getting vinculum in fractions with Asana Math and unicode-math when compiled with xelatex
Dear Folks, With this minimal example: --- \documentclass[a4paper,12pt]{article} \usepackage{fontspec} \usepackage{unicode-math} \setmathfont{Asana Math} \begin{document} $\frac{2\pi r}{r} = 2\pi$ \end{document --- I am unable to get the horizontal bar or vinculum for the fraction on the left when I compile the file with xelatex, although I can get it when compiled with lualatex. FYI, I am using TeXLive 2010 on Kubuntu 10.04 and the relevant versions are: XeTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.2-0.9997.4 (TeX Live 2010) unicode-math.sty2010/09/27 v0.5b Unicode maths in XeLaTeX and LuaLaTeX ASsana Math Version 000.928 Can someone please suggest how to compile the file correctly with xelatex? [Rails] Need to add path to routes.rb
Dear Folks, I am Web developer and have experience mainly with the Django Web framework for Python and wish to learn ROR. I am currently using Rails 3.0.3 and was getting a routing error whenever I added a view to a controller until I found out I had to add the path to the routes.rb file under the config directory. Is this new in Rails 3? I am asking this because I was following the example in Agile Web Development with Rails 3rd Edition which uses Rails 2 and getting the routing error. I also find that if use the rails generate command the routes.rb file is automatically updated. Does this mean that the proper way to create views and controllers is to use the above command. If so how do I create a view function in an existing controller without having it being overwritten or is the manual way the only way to do this? I hope that is clear. You have two options: a) finish what you started b) reinstall In case of reinstall, it should be enough if you reinstall context and luatex, I guess that can be done with: tlmgr install --reinstall context luatex You will have some leftovers (extra files), but that should in general not be a problem. (You can try to delete (= first move to some other place) texmf-dist/tex/context before reinstalling if tmlgr won't complain too much about missing files that cannot be removed.) Before I saw your reply I did the following: 1. mv /usr/local/texlive/2010/texmf-dist/tex/context /tmp 2. Installed the ConteXt scheme from the TeXLive 2010 DVD along with the following further customizations, just in case they had been altered: Extra Fonts Recommended Fonts TeX and Outline Fonts Extra Formats LuaTeX packages 3. tlmgr update --self --all 4. luatools --generate context --make The context from TeXLive 2010 works fine but texexec fails with this message: --- ConTeXt ver: 2010.07.30 11:35 MKII fmt: 2010.10.5 int: english/english system : cont-new loaded (/localhost/texlive/2010/texmf-dist/tex/context/base/cont-new.tex FatalError : Your format does not match the base files! -- If something goes very bad, you can of course always reinstall everything, but if the above works, there's no reason to worry. (That's slightly more non-trivial.) I almost forgot about that file when I said that one should also update mtxrun. Wanting to have both context minimals and TeXLive 2010--modified only by tlmgr--coexisting, I tried to install the minimals in a directory called ~/local-context using the following commands: rsync -av rsync://contextgarden.net/minimals/current/context/current/ \ ~/local-context/ rsync -av --include 'mtxrun' --include 'luatools' \ rsync://contextgarden.net/minimals/current/bin/context/linux-64/bin/ \ ~/local-context/bin/ I then set the following environment variables: PATH=~/local-context/bin:$PATH; export PATH OSFONTDIR=/usr/local/share/fonts:/usr/local/texlive/2010/texmf/fonts:$HOME/.fonts; export OSFONTDIR Finally, I ran luatools --generate context --make context --make cont-en mtxrun --script fonts --reload But I got errors about some files not being resolved and context was broken. So, I unset the environment variables, and just to be doubly sure, repeated steps 1 to 4 above, to get a working context (but not texexec) from TeXLive 2010. If there is a complete error-free algorithm/script in future for making TeXLive 2010 and the context-minmals coexist independently I will appreciate knowing about it. Are you saying that re-installing ConTeXt from the TeXLive 2010 DVD and periodically running tlmgr update --self --all should take care of any context updates? In any case, if I wished to use the minimals installation, can I set it up in my TEXMFHOME directory at ~/texmf by modifying the rsync target so: rsync -av rsync://contextgarden.net/minimals/current/context/current/ ~/texmf/ rsync -av rsync://contextgarden.net/minimals/current/bin/luatex/linux-64/bin/luatex ~/texmf Or would I be better advised to stay with what TeXLive 2010 provides for now? [XeTeX] Navigation links not active with beamer and xelatex
Dear Folks, This is a beamer-xelatex question on a problem that arises with xelatex but not with pdflatex, and is hence likely to be xelatex-related. The following is a minimal test file: --- \documentclass{beamer} %\usepackage{fontspec} % Comment out this line for compilation with pdflatex % \begin{document} \begin{frame}{Slide One} Contents of Slide One \end{frame} \begin{frame}{Slide Two} Contents of Slide Two \end{frame} \begin{frame}{Slide Three} Contents of Slide Three \end{frame} \end{document} --- If the second line is commented out as shown and the file compiled with pdflatex, the navigation links at the bottom of each slide are active. If the second line is uncommented and the file compiled with xelatex, the navigation links still show up but are neither active nor functional. FYI, I am on a Kubuntu system running the Ubuntu texlive-2009 packages but using the latest pgf and beamer bundles from CTAN. fontspec is 2008/08/09 v1.18. I am grateful for any suggestion to overcome this problem and am willing to upgrade to TeXLive 2010 if this will solve my problem. Many thanks. [Bug 358654] Re: udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured
LL Phillips: You might want to see http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9796852postcount=10 for StewartM's step-by-step solution if you have previous kernel images that you can reboot from. If you do not have a previously working kernel, you might have to do what Andrux101 has suggested at http://ohioloco.ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8079302postcount=12 and what Aymeric Mansoux has also suggested above. Be sure to prepend sudo to the relevant commands. In any case, here is what I did: 1. Boot from Live CD. Go into console mode [Ctrl-Alt-F1] or fire up a terminal. 2. sudo mkdir /media/newroot 3. sudo mount /dev/sda1 /media/newroot (My root partition is at /dev/sda1; change /dev/sda1 to suit your case.) 4. sudo chroot /media/newroot 5. sudo update-initramfs -u -k all (the all argument is a bit of bravado since I did not know what exactly it would do. If in doubt, try 2.6.32-24-generic instead of all.) 6. Reboot without Live CD. It is a great shame that this bug has resurfaced after a kernel image update. FWIW, my most recent kernels are: 2.6.32-24-generic and 2.6.32-24-preempt in case it is one and not the other theta has triggered this problem. I appeal for an early closure of this problem. [Bug 522814] Re: ibus does not install itself as an option for the all_ALL quasi-locale
I can confirm the reported behaviour for ibus on a fresh CD install of Kubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 on an AMD 64 system. One consequent problem is that if I launch the KDE kate text editor version 3.4.5 for KDE 4.4.5 from the launchpad pparepos, I still get a No Input Window message from the ibus system tray icon. So, input method switching is not available in kate launched from an icon. However, if I lauch kate from a KDE konsole terminal by typing kate then I am able to access in kate the different languages I need through ibus. FWIW, I think this is because my personal ~/.bashrc has the lines export GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus export xmodifie...@im=ibus export QT_IM_MODULE=ibus but the non-availability of the system-wide alternatives as noted above make the ibus language options unavailable to kate launched from an icon. -- ibus does not install itself as an option for the all_ALL quasi-locale https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/522814 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

It is also problematic to install TeX Live or some parts of it separately if one has already installed the TeX packages made available by the distro, as all sorts of things break (or will suddenly break when there is some package update). The tlmgr utility also conflicts with the distro's own package update feature so is typically unavailable. On K/Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) I can trivially install via gui or command line texlive packages currently bearing version number 2009-7ubuntu3. FWIW, maintaining two separate TeXLive distributions, one from the K/Ubuntu packages and another from the CTAN TeXLive repository is likely to be problem prone. After installing the K/Ubuntu packages, one simply updates and upgrades them with apt-get rather than running tlmgr. [STUMP] Crash in VLC Open File dialog
Backtrace at http://paste.lisp.org/display/95662 I had VLC open, and then went to the Open File dialog. Then, while the dialog was still open, I hit C-t C-t to switch windows, and poof. Some thoughts that simias and I had in #stumpwm: - Things seem doomed at (7F5B5001EA10) : 11 (TRANSIENTS-OF NIL) 69 - #'shadows-of relies on #'window-by-id to return something that's a valid argument to #'transients-of; however, #'window-by-id fails silently when given nil as an argument. I'm not familiar with this corner of the X protocol (nor with any other corner), but the silent failure in #'window-by-id seems odd. Any suggestions? Re: Is automatic reload of a module available in Python?
Arnaud Delobelle wrote: Here is a very simple way to improve what you do, which won't require you to change the way you work or to learn a new paradigm: Instead of testing your functions interactively, put your testing code in a file, e.g. 'program_tests.py'. Your can then type python program_tests.py at the shell interactive prompt. To perform the tests again, just re-execute that file. If your tests are divided into different units, you can put these in functions: def test_frobz(): #testing code for frobzation of klops def test_frizz(): #testing code for frizzment of frobzied klops # etc.. So if you want to keep doing interactive tests, you can import program_tests and call whichever testing functions you want. You may even have arguments to those functions to test them with different parameters. I know some people will point at more 'pro' ways of testing but this has the merit of being very straightforward. Then when you move on to more sophisticated techniques, I think you will understand better the motivations behind them. It took me some time to cotton on to exactly what you were saying, but once I grasped it and tried it out, I found it very effective and time-saving. Replacement for e.message() in python 2.6
Dear Folks, In previous versions of Python I used to use e.message() to print out the error message of an exception like so: try: result = x / y except ZeroDivisionError, e: print e.message() Unfortunately in Python 2.6 the message method is deprecated. Is there any replacement for the message method in Python 2.6 or is there any best practice that should be used in Python from now on? Thank you. Is automatic reload of a module available in Python?
Dear Folks, I am currently developing a python program, let us call it generic.py, and I am testing out the functions therein by testing them out interactively in the python interpreter by invoking python and doing import generic Once I hit an error, I need to revise my file and reload the module using reload(generic) The difference in syntax between invoking import and reload is really costing me time and patience. Therefore, I would like to ask: 1. Is there a method of auto-reloading a module while developing it and testing it with the interactive python interpreter? 2. Is there a better way of developing a program? Thank you. Chandra -- http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-list
Executing a command from within python using the subprocess module
Dear Folks, I want to execute a command from within python using the subprocess module. Coming from a Perl background, I thought I could use variable interpolation in strings, but found that this is neither supported nor the Python way. Accordingly, I am a little at sea about how to accomplish it. I have stated what I am trying to do in the minimal example below: --- import subprocess width = 5 height = 30 colors = ['#abcdef]', '#456789'] filename = /tmp/image.png # I want to get the equivalent of variable interpolation in Perl # so that the command # # convert -size 5x30 gradient:#abcdef-#456789 /tmp/image.png # # is derived from the variables above # and executed by subprocess.call() or subprocess.Popen() # from within Python # # Note that the command convert is from the ImageMagick suite # It exists and is executable by the shell; # the remaining values are arguments. # The command has been confirmed to execute correctly. --- Thanks in advance. It works. Now I need to understand why and am able to follow what you are doing part of the way: 1. Assign default values in the function definition. 2. Store the variables existing in the local namespace in the list lookup. 3. Assert that there are no newlines in the values in lookup converted to strings. (Why? Is this because of splitlines() later on?) 4. Assemble a string (array?) for the subprocess.call argument using the format string syntax (section 8.1.3 et seq. of the Python documentation for 2.6.4). Your example works with default option of shell=False for subprocess.call(). 5. I am unable to decipher how you got to format(**lookup).splitlines()) especially the **prefix part, although I guess that splitlines() is dishing out the arguments one by one from each line in the subprocess.call argument. Any correction of (1) to (4) and an explanation of (5) would be most appreciated. All in all, your code is a magnificent example of wrapping the function within python. This is the first time I have seen something like this. Thank you very much. Chandra -- http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-list

It works if I use it so: subprocess.call(s, shell=True) and I think that is because s is a single string assembled in almost the variable interpolation fashion of Perl. It does not work with the default shell=False argument, presumably because the arguments are not split into separate strings (something that was horrible to do by hand using the %s and %() syntax that I had tried out previously). Sorting a list of lists
Dear Folks, I have lines of values like so: 14, [25, 105, 104] 10, [107, 106, 162] 21, [26, 116, 165] I need to sort them in two ways: (a) By the numeric value of the first column; and (b) by the sum of the elements of the second item in each list, which is a list in itself. At present, I have appended each line into a list L so that I for teh above minimal data, I have a list of lists thus: [[14, [25, 105, 104]], [10, [107, 106, 162]], [21, [26, 116, 165]]] I have tried using (a) sorted(L, key = lambda x:(x[0])) and (b) sorted(L, key = lambda x:(sum(x[1]))) and get the anticipated results for (a) and (b0, at least with the above minimal data set. Is this a sensible way to go about the sorting, or are there better ways of doing it in Python? Also, I am baffled because the above fails obviously when len(L) is about a hundred and I can't figure out why. TIA Chandra -- http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-list
Dynamic variable names
Dear Folks, I have read that one should use a dictionary in python to accommodate dynamic variable names. Yet, I am puzzled how to achieve that in my case. Here is what I want to do: 1. The user inputs a number of six-digit hex numbers as a comma-separated list. These numbers represent colours, but the number of colours is not known beforehand. 2. Using these colours in pairs, I am generating image files whose names must be unique. I could use the respective hex numbers for this, but would like to explore generating filenames like colour_1-colour_2.jpg Because I do not know how many colours there would be in advance, I need to generate the colour_n names on the fly. So, my two questions are: 1. How do I do this properly in python? 2. If there is a better scheme than what I have outlined, can someone please point me to a Web link? Thank you. My packages have version number 6.5.8.3-1~9.10prevu1. 2. I ran gscan2pdf with the new package and experienced the same hanging at 50% on saving to PDF. 3. I deleted my ~/.gscan2pdf file and re-ran gscan2pdf. This time, I was able to save successfully to PDF. Interestingly, the progress dialog on saving still hung at 50% but then very rapidly concluded the action and disappeared. 4. Note: on scanning lineart, there is no compression and indeed no choice for compression other than none. On scanning grayscale, I chose no compression again. In sum, changing the imagemagick suite to the latest on the Debian/Ubuntu source repositories and removing the old ~/.gscan2pdf file did the trick. [Bug 368053] Re: Jaunty fails to recognize USB-connected cell phone as device
On Kubuntu Karmic 9.10 I have the same problem with an Sony Ericsson K750i mobile phone. Here is what I did to get around the problem: 1. sudo apt-get install usbmount pmount 2. Create /etc/udev/rules.d/75-mobile-phone.rules with this content: SUBSYSTEM!=usb_device, ACTION!=add, GOTO=mobile_phone_rules_end # Sony Ericsson K750i mobile phone SYSFS{idVendor}==0fce, SYSFS{idProduct}==d016, GROUP=plugdev, MODE=0660 LABEL=mobile_phone_rules_end 3. Unless I'm missing something, the (format t %~a len) in format-expand should actually be appending onto the output (since the idea is to add the literal string if there's no format char). That looks like a bug to me too... I guess one solution would be to wrap it with (setf output (concatenate 'string output (format nil ...))). The patch itself has a minor bug in that from-left-p is referred to as from-end-p at one point (only just spotted that thanks to a compile warning). Other than that it looks fine (although I think the function as a whole could do with a cleanup, especially if we add more stuff like this), and I'll push it shortly if nobody else has comments to make. Thank you for catching that bug. I'll try cleaning up that function as a whole (once you've pushed my fix, to avoid merge conflicts...), does anybody have any suggestions? [STUMP] Patch to STUMPWM::FORMAT-EXPANDER in primitives.lisp
Greetings, fellow tilers of windows! I've written a little patch for a friend, that enables the use of ^ after a number in a format expansion string (such as *SCREEN-MODE-LINE-FORMAT* or *WINDOW-FORMAT*) to trim from the left, instead of the right. I picked the #\^ character because it's fairly standard for an end-of-string anchor, because of its use in perl-compatible regex. I considered using one of the FORMAT modify characters, but since format expansion strings aren't format strings, I ended up settling with this. Thoughts? Comments? Cookies? Flames? Patch attached. The patch was made against commit 95c420e6214908d96e08eeed27bb7a1ee0d103bf from the official git repo. I've made a commit in my local repo, so I could push this myself if that's more convenient. [Bug 362186] Re: Spurious lines on print outs
I replaced /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops with the new Poppler-based pdftops filter and changed its permissions to 755 as advised at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/362186/comments/43 above. Now, the job does not get printed although it shows up in the printer queue. The printer light does not flash to show a pending job either. Could it be missing an end-of-file marker? Reverting to the original /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops reactivates printing but with the original problem. So the non-printing is a direct result of using the new filter. -- Spurious lines on print outs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/362186 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 362186] Re: Spurious lines on print outs
I have re-installed poppler-utils and used the latest Improved Poppler- based pdftops and printed the PDF. I can report the following: 1. The small piece of the lower border of each letter [being] added to the upper border problem has now gone. Thank you very much for that. 2. When I superimposed this printout with one of the same page printed on the same printer from another PC running Intrepid, I find the following differences on the new printout: (a) Header is moved down by 4 mm (b) Footer is moved up by 7mm (c) Left margin is moved inward by 4mm (d) The same line occupies a shorter length I wonder whether these result from different default paper size settings and scale to fit options on the two PCs. I will re-install the printer on the Jaunty machine and report back if these differences still exist. After re-installing the printer on the Jaunty PC, the new printout is raised by 2 mm for the whole page. I can confirm the same problems as reported above, with PDF documents written with Adobe Minion Pro and Wranock Pro on Kubuntu 9.04 on an AMD 64 PC. However, a PDF embodying Linux Libertine OTF, Lohit Tamil, and Lohit Hindi fonts does not suffer from the small piece of the lower border of each letter [being] added to the upper border noted by Till Kamppeter above. [sage-devel] Corrections to tutorial
Dear Folks, I am working my way through the Sage 3.4 Tutorial from my local copy of it, with sage running in a terminal. I have encountered some pitfalls., some typographic errors, and some mystifying errors. I am collating these into a text file. But before I put in too much effort into it, I would like to ask what would be the best way for me to communicate these suggested changes, as simply appending a text file of changes in an email would clutter this mailing list. Thank you. [sage-support] Re: Error in solving system of non-linear equations
Jason Grout wrote: R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar wrote: Would you recommend that I compile from the source tarball instead? Personally, that's what I recommend. Sage development moves at a nice pace, and you're already missing out on a lot of very nice features and a lot of bugfixes because the debian package hasn't kept up. The Sage that you download is self-contained in one directory, which you can delete or move around, so it is trivial to have multiple versions of Sage installed in parallel in your home directory, for example. Thank you. I have downloaded, compiled and installed sage-3.4 from the source tarball on my Kubuntu Intrepid PC. It has been packaged really well because there were no hiccups. I only did two things after that. 1. On the first invocation of sage after installation, with sudo sage I ran install_scripts('/usr/local/bin') at the sage: prompt. 2. I also symlinked the sage script so: sudo ln -sf /path-to-untarred-sage/sage-3.4/sage /usr/local/bin/sage After that, things have been running smoothly and the problem with solving non-linear equations that originally prompted this thread has gone. Does running sage -maxima run maxima? Can you solve simpler equations? This time, on running sage -maxima I get: --- Maxima 5.16.3 http://maxima.sourceforge.net Using Lisp CLISP 2.46 (2008-07-02) Distributed under the GNU Public License. See the file COPYING. Dedicated to the memory of William Schelter. The function bug_report() provides bug reporting information. --- For the benefit of the debian-sage team, the result for the Debian package was --- Maxima 5.13.0 http://maxima.sourceforge.net Using Lisp GNU Common Lisp (GCL) GCL 2.6.8 (aka GCL) Distributed under the GNU Public License. See the file COPYING. Dedicated to the memory of William Schelter. This is a development version of Maxima. The function bug_report() provides bug reporting information. --- Perhaps the differences between these two versions, including the type of Lisp, (plus other possible differences) contributed to the error I originally saw with the Debian package. [sage-support] Error in solving system of non-linear equations
Dear Folks, Pardon for the double-posting since I am unsure which list is more appropriate. In section 2.4.1 of the Sage Tutorial, there is a non-linear equation example from Jason Grout that I tried out, but it failed. Details follow. My version is built from the Ubuntu jaunty package source and runs on a Kubuntu Intrepid AMD 64 PC. The startup banner is -- | SAGE Version 3.0.5, Release Date: 2008-07-11 | | Type notebook() for the GUI, and license() for information.| -- When I load the file with these contents for the example: === var('x y p q') (x, y, p, q) eq1 = p+q==9 eq2 = q*y+p*x==-6 eq3 = q*y^2+p*x^2==24 solve([eq1,eq2,eq3,p==1],p,q,x,y) === I get this error (with directory paths anonymized): --- ValueErrorTraceback (most recent call last) /Path-To-File_non_linear_eq_sage_0.py in module() 8 eq2 = q*y+p*x==-Integer(6) 9 eq3 = q*y**Integer(2)+p*x**Integer(2)==Integer(24) --- 10 solve([eq1,eq2,eq3,p==Integer(1)],p,q,x,y) 11 12 /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/sage/calculus/equations.pyc in solve(f, *args, **kwds) 1386 s = m.solve(args) 1387 except: - 1388 raise ValueError, Unable to solve %s for %s%(f, args) 1389 a = repr(s) 1390 sol_list = string_to_list_of_solutions(a) ValueError: Unable to solve [q + p == 9, q*y + p*x == -6, q*y^2 + p*x^2 == 24, p == 1] for (p, q, x, y) WARNING: Failure executing file: Path-To-File_non_linear_eq_sage_0.py --- The version of the tutorial that I am using came with the version of Sage installed. So, I do not think it is a version incmpatibility problem. Can someone tell me what the workaround is, or whether I need to file a bug report. Thank you. Jason Grout wrote: I'm not sure what is going on here. Version 3.0.5 is from quite a while ago, at least in Sage terms. The calculation works great in the current version of Sage (version 3.4, just released yesterday, as tested on http://www.sagenb.org.) Did you say that this was from the jaunty source, as in the debian packaging of Sage? Yes. It is from the prospective Ubuntu 9.04 (April 2009) Jaunty release built from Debian packages that might be customized for Ubuntu. Would you recommend that I compile from the source tarball instead?
