[ECOLOG-L] Ecology Conference in PA

2017-09-01 Thread Sarah Princiotta
Lacawac Sanctuary and Biological Field Station is excited to announce the
6th annual Lacawac Ecology Conference (LEC) to be held October 27-28, 2017.
It will be held at Lacawac Sanctuary in the Pocono Mountains of
Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Registration is now open!

LEC provides:
- A great venue for connecting with regional scientists
- An opportunity to discuss research ideas in an informal setting (for both
faculty and students)
- Building new collaborations in the Northeast Region
- Lodging in our beautiful and historic Great Camp Lodge, which is listed
on the National Register of Historic Places

This year we have Dr. Courtney Wighdal-Perry of SUNY Fredonia as our
plenary speaker. Dr. Wighdal-Perry's primary research interests are in
understanding how environmental change influences organisms that live in
lakes. This includes aspects of phytoplankton ecology, lake response to
climate change and anthropogenic effects, regional synchrony of such
responses, and the influence of physical lake characteristics in shaping
food web interactions.

For more details or to register, see our webpage:
http://www.lacawac.org/lacawac-ecology-conference.html

Registration should be received by October 15, 2017. Please contact Sarah
Princiotta (sarah.princio...@lacawc.org) with any questions.

[ECOLOG-L] Ecological Genomics Workshop in PA

2017-03-31 Thread Sarah Princiotta
Lacawac Sanctuary and Biological Field Station is hosting a two-day
workshop on ecological functional genomics 24-26 May 2017. This workshop
will introduce ecologists and evolutionary biologists to computational
methods for the comparative analysis of genome sequences. Topics discussed
will include finding homologous sequences within a genome and in other
species, gene family construction, multiple sequence alignment,
phylogenetic tree reconstruction, analysis of gene duplication and loss,
and tests for selection in protein-encoding genes. The workshop is intended
to enable researchers to ask and answer questions in molecular ecology,
such as those focused on genetic underpinnings of phenotypic
diversification.

A limited number of scholarships for currently-enrolled undergraduates are
available.

The deadline to apply is 14 April 2017. Please visit
http://www.lacawac.org/workshop-on-ecological-functional-genomics.html or

information.

[ECOLOG-L] Freshwater data in Pennsylvania

2017-02-15 Thread Sarah Princiotta
The Lacawac Sanctuary and Biological Field Station is collecting baseline
biological, chemical, and physical data for Pennsylvania’s freshwater
ecosystems (lakes, rivers, and streams) and compiling it into a database to
aid in climate change research. This project is a long-term venture funded
by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The
goal of this project is to develop a collaborative database and use it as a
tool to better understand and illustrate how climate change is shaping
freshwater ecosystems in Pennsylvania. Data obtained by the Lacawac
Sanctuary will not be published without obtaining the permission of our
data sources. The final database will be shared with the PA DCNR as per
requirements of the Wild Resource Conservation Program.

We're interested in current and historical data. If you are interested in
volunteering data please contact Stephanie Harper at scie...@lacawac.org.

Thank you in advance for you time and assistance. If you have any questions
regarding the project or data we are collecting, please do not hesitate to
contact us.
