Bug#500653: apt-get must use faster download algorithms or aria2 as a backend downloader
Package: apt Version: 0.7.14 apt-get apparently currently uses some simple wget-type sequential download algorithm for all its functions that download anything from the net, like update, install, dist-upgrade, upgrade, build-dep, source etc. This really does not well use the available broadband bandwidth of most users. Hence I am forced to use home-cooked scripts to extract the URLs to download and then pass them to aria2 (GPL) to download, so that the thing is done faster. If it is built-in, everyone can benefit. Granted, the user may not want his entire bandwidth hogged by apt-get, but at least provide this as an option -- use a faster split-download algorithm, or at least use a good backend downloader like aria2 which provides high-speed downloading. I am a downstream (Ubuntu) user of Debian apt, and the downstream people redirected me to here from http://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/275994 Shriramana Sharma. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Package: gzip Version: 1.3.12 bzip2 gives a -k or --keep option which prevents the source files from being deleted. gzip does not have this. Bug#497971: May be a patch will help
Bastian, Xavier is right. Japan and other folks will suffer from this solution. 1) Either this dirty fix shall be desribed in the release notes of Lenny with BIG LETTERS. 2) Or I can (I believe) provide a patch that will create new Debian regulatory domain for mac80211 cards which will be a superset of all regulatory domains. Sure, this is not correct from political point of view, but anyway this limitation is too artificial. What do you think about the second solution? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#487946:
Why limit this comment to apt-get *source* ? Any command that causes apt-get to download suffers from this. apt's sources.list should be revised to read like this: [Mirrors] ftp.de.debian.org ftp.us.debian.org osuosl.org/ftp.debian.org [Distributions] sid sid-updates sid-backports [Components] free non-free This would be equivalent to many lines specifying all the components for each distribution for each mirror. For catering to cases where this appropriate is not appropriate (eg local self-styled repos and third-party repos that do not follow Debian's component system etc), have an Old-style section where the user can enter old-style lines like: [Old-style] deb file:///home/ramram/local-deb-repo / deb http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt sid main deb http://apt.wxwidgets.org/ sid-wx main deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian sid non-free So lines in this old-style section will be processed as before, and the newer type lines will be construed to apply for all mirrors listed. Bug#284092: apt-get should not add epoch numbers to the filenames of downloaded packages
Hello. On all Debian (and Ubuntu) mirrors the filenames of the deb packages do not contain the epoch information. The epoch information is only used by the apt system to determine which package should be considered newer than which and this information is present inside the deb file itself. So it is not really required in the filename. Further, seeing as the deb packages on the Debian mirrors do not contain this epoch information, apt-get should not add this %3a1 or such characters to the file names. I encounted problems maintaining my local repository (of downloaded packages) due to this meaningless behaviour of apt. Please disable this mis-behaviour of apt. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#500656: ability to create patches from older states of topic branches
Package: topgit Version: 0.3-1 Severity: wishlist Tags: upstream To my understanding, topgit can create a patch for the current state of a topic branch. It would be nice if it could extract patches corresponding to a historical state too. Specifically, assume that there's a 'pristine' branch, a number of topgit branches, and a branch (topgit or not) from where a Debian package is built. Once the package is built, the commit is tagged, e.g. debian/1.0-1. Development continues, the topgit branches are tg-updated, and now it seems impossible to extract the topgit patches that went into debian/1.0-1. It seems like the solution is a tg-tag command, which, when called like tg-tag debian/1.0-1 tgbranch[, tgbranch, ...] tags the top-bases and tips of all specified tg-branches, e.g. like this: refs/top-tags/debian/1.0-1/base and refs/top-tags/debian/1.0-1/tip Now, tg-patch could learn to deal with a tag name, and it would simply use those two refs instead of the top-base of the current branch and the tip. Yes, there is time. l10n updates are easily accepted by the release team, so the timeframe is about: - 7 days for the translation update round - 10 days for ageing - enter testing So, unless lenny is released in less than 3 weeks (and it will not, according to the RC bug count and the fact that the installer is not yet released), the update will go in it. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#500592: Using pngcrush warns of different versions for png.c and png.h
Kapil Hari Paranjape said at 30/09/2008 01:51: Here is what is written in the changelog regarding closing #203020 * debian/patches/pngcrush_relocate_warning: relocated warning about different versions to verbose header. Closes: #203020. The keyword is relocated as opposed to eliminated. Since this bug does not affect the core functionality of pngcrush, I am reducing the severity to minor. The full story follows. The Debian binary package makes use of the dynamically loadable libpng for a number of reasons. The warning indicates that libpng has been upgraded but pngcrush has not been re-compiled. The upstream author provides a version of pngcrush that uses its own version of the png routines and feels that this is a better way to do things. However, in order to make it easier for Debian, this -nolib version is also provided. Thus, the warning when there is a mis-match. Originally, the warning appeared everytime pngcrush was run which was annoying, especially when it was run in cron scripts. Thus the warning has been _relocated_ to be shown only when pngcrush is run in verbose mode or when you explicitly ask for version info. Hope this clarifies matters, Hi Kapil, Thanks for the clarification. It appears the change was made for 1.6.4-4 whereas etch has 1.6.4-3 which explains why I see the warning every time the program is run. Very annoying but as you say does not affect the core functionality of pngcrush. I guess this bug can be merged with 203020 and closed. Apologies for the noise. Bug#500656: topgit patches from tags
martin f krafft wrote: I wish people would change subject lines more often... Yes, it was time :-) See #500656. Interesting... With Manoj's arguments and this bugreport, I now paradoxically understand the point in having two separate build/master branches. IIUC, the problem is being able to recreate the patch series of an earlier release: Manoj doesn't care and Martin keeps it in a branch, but this branch is more an artifact than a real working branch. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Concerning #500656, and Martin's suggestion: It seems like the solution is a tg-tag command, which, when called like tg-tag debian/1.0-1 tgbranch[, tgbranch, ...] tags the top-bases and tips of all specified tg-branches, e.g. like this: refs/top-tags/debian/1.0-1/base and refs/top-tags/debian/1.0-1/tip Doing it that way would pollute the tag namespace, IMO. What about keeping this data in a dedicated, special branch, like pristine-tar does? Then it would be quite easy to implement some kind of tg-debcheckout that could checkout a specific Debian release (i.e. the right revision + the right patch series). I am CC'ing #500656 with this suggestion. I don't mind having one tag per Debian release, but if we do what I say in the previous paragraph, I think the tags would be meaningless, and even misleading. Another solution would be to create short-living branches at each Debian release, that would just include the patch series and a final tag, before being deleted. Something like this: (master)---+--++- \ \\ 0.3-1 0.3-20.3-3 This approach seems clean to me, but I am not so fond of it after all because it is quite error-prone (more than likely interference of things related to git and things related to packaging), and I wouldn't recommend it for a collaborative maintenance. (I know, I am strange to propose things I don't like myself, but my thoughts might be interesting to someone...) After all, Martin's current approach (collapsing all the short-living branches into one build branch) achieves the same goal, and now I kind of agree with it (it wasn't the case when I've started writing this mail!). also sprach Stéphane Glondu [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2008.09.30.1019 +0200]: refs/top-tags/debian/1.0-1/base and refs/top-tags/debian/1.0-1/tip Doing it that way would pollute the tag namespace, IMO. Yes and no. Normal tags are in refs/tags. I am proposing the refs/top-tags namespace, which is reserved for topgit anyway (topgit reserved refs/top-*). Sure, gitk and the like would still show those refs (as grey refs, not yellow tags or green branches), but git-tag wouldn't. What about keeping this data in a dedicated, special branch, like pristine-tar does? You want to keep files with SHA-1 refs in a branch? I am not sure I like that at all. First of all, this clearly seems like a feature for upstream, and second, Git is all about keeping track of refs, storing them as payload in a branch seems like patching patch files :) -- .''`. martin f. krafft [EMAIL PROTECTED] : :' : proud Debian developer, author, administrator, and user `. `'` http://people.debian.org/~madduck - http://debiansystem.info `- Debian - when you have better things to do than fixing systems an avocado-tone refrigerator would look good on your resume. digital_signature_gpg.asc Description: Digital signature (see http://martin-krafft.net/gpg/)

Bug#496655: State of pci.ids
Hello and thanks for the prompt response! Martin, what is the pros of having this striped data available? In many cases, the subsystem ID is needed to reliably identify a PCI card as the manufacturers are used to make multiple cards with the same chip, but wired differently. Dropping this information in the udeb is if course a good way of saving space, but the full package should contain everything. Bug#499469: #499469 llvm-examples: binNMU-unsafe dependency on llvm-dev
Hi, while looking at our RC bugs, I discovered this one and thought I could fix it by loosing the Dependency on llvm-dev to = ${source:Version}, but after looking at the package, I wondered if the Dependency is needed at all. The package contains only example sourcecode, which I would understand as a kind of documentation. The code is still readable and understandable without the llvm-dev package (even if not complileable). Thus I think llvm-examples should only recommend llvm-dev without any version (or does llvm break it's API with every release?). Regards Evgeni pgpOq0LyRe8B5.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#500656: topgit patches from tags
martin f krafft wrote: Yes and no. Normal tags are in refs/tags. I am proposing the refs/top-tags namespace, which is reserved for topgit anyway (topgit reserved refs/top-*). Sorry, I didn't pay attention to this. I guess this needs a special cloning/pushing/pulling procedure, then? BTW, you don't talk about pushing/pulling/sharing with others in your quick tuto (but you do talk about cloning). You want to keep files with SHA-1 refs in a branch? I am not sure I like that at all. [...] Yes. [...] First of all, this clearly seems like a feature for upstream, [...] What do you mean by a feature for upstream? [...] and second, Git is all about keeping track of refs, storing them as payload in a branch seems like patching patch files :) Indeed, it seems so. But I was getting inspiration from pristine-tar. I guess *.id files that are committed there are not meant to be used (and/or alterable) by human beings. Do we want this for historical bases and tips of tg branches? I am not really at ease with mixing live and dead script-manipulated references in the same place. Bug#500674: iptables: non-relevant documentation included
Package: iptables Version: 1.3.6.0debian1-5 Severity: minor Iptables on lenny still seems to include the old NAT-HOWTO and packet-filtering howtos for kernel 2.4 series. Since Lenny won't support 2.4 anymore, this docs are not relevant and even misleading (it *seems* iptables includes proper documentation when that's not the case). I'd wish to log this with higher priority since I'm one of those that think that software without proper documentation is (almost) as broken as if it has functional issues, but I understand others won't feel the same. Proposed course of action is: 1) See if there are more recent versions of those HOWTOs relevant to kernel 2.6 and, if so, include them on Lenny. 2) If that's not the case, fill a bug against HOWTOs' upstream maintainer and DELETE them from Lenny: I think that's a better output than current situation. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-6-amd64 Locale: LANG=es_ES.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=es_ES.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages iptables depends on: ii libc6 2.3.6.ds1-13etch7 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libselinux11.32-3SELinux shared libraries iptables recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#500677: live-helper: update lh_binary_rootfs to better support wildcards in file exclusion
Package: live-helper Version: 1.0.1-1 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch I'm interested in file exclusion mecanism when building Debian Live filesystem from chroot. The nice thing about topgit is that it's really just a thin layer on top of Git, so everything Git also works with TopGit. Bug#481369: run ioniced and in background
On Mon, 02 Jun 2008 10:53:33 +0100, Scott James Remnant wrote: Running it in the background would mean you were seeking the disk all over the shop, On a solid state disk (CompactFlash, USB stick or otherwise), there is no overhead due to seeking. For rotating disks the kernel uses an elevator algorithm that minimises the amount of seeking necessary. This elevator algorithm works best if there is multiple concurrent IO, because if there is only one thread doing IO, there is not much to schedule. For example, the readahead() call blocks according to its manpage, so if you just run readahead-list, you might actually see more disk seeks if the list itself is not optimised for the layout of the blocks on disk than if it runs in the background. and attempting to readahead pages that were already read by an application running in parallel. That is not a problem at all, the pages won't be read twice, the readahead will just be a no-op since the pages are already in memory, and readahead-list will then just continue with the next file. Likewise ioniceing readahead is basically moronic. If you run it in the foreground, it doesn't make a difference. If you run readahead-list in the background it will. Unless readahead-list really accurately predicts what files to read in what order, it could be that some boot scripts might start earlier or behave different than when the boot was profiled, and then they might want to read in some file that was not readahead yet. In that case you want to give that script precedence over readahead-list. -- Met vriendelijke groet / with kind regards, Guus Sliepen [EMAIL PROTECTED] signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#496289: [pkg-fso-maint] fso-frameworkd: consider moving /usr/share/openmoko/scenarios/gsmhandset.state to /etc to make it conffile
Hi there! FWIW, I haven't had the time to look deep into this issues. On Tue, 30 Sep 2008 12:24:21 +0200, Timo Juhani Lindfors wrote: Joachim Breitner [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I’m not sure how well that would work with the revamped sound handling in the next release of the framework, maybe Guillaume or whoever works There is now a 'scenario_dir' option in frameworkd.conf which defaults to /etc/alsa/scenario These scenarios doesn't belong to ALSA and, even worse, are not directly managed by any upstream ALSA utils. Instead, they're specific to frameworkd: why not default to /etc/freesmartphone/scenarios? This is how I see it, from an outside POV, but still according to the FHS [1]: - /usr/share/freesmartphone/scenarios default scenarios, not to be modified by the end-users since they are in a read-only position [2] - /etc/freesmarphone/scenarios modified scnearios, since they are configuration files [3] When frameworkd needs a scenario it looks for it in /e/f/s/ and if it doesn't find it it loads the default one, i.e. the one from /u/s/f/s/. I can see only one problem with /u/s/f/s/: usually, there's not one general scenario, but each one is specific to the sound chip. In this case, the solution would be something like /etc/frameworkd.conf: [odeviced.audio] # this is for unmodified scenarios, please don't change it default_scenarios_dir = /usr/share/openmoko/scenarios/ # this is for customized scenarios scenarios_dir = /etc/freesmarphone/scenarios This will also help each distribution (like Debian) to untight scenarios file from frameworkd: e.g., Debian could ship frameworkd binaries in fso-frameworkd and scenarios in openmoko-scenarios [4]. On Debian, one thing that you should consider about mixer levels is that as soon as you install alsa-utils, by default mixer levels are stored and restored on shutdown and bootup, respectively. how about migrating the debian package to use that? This is clearly an upstream problem, which means that I'd prefer to wait for upstream to solve it :-D Thx, bye, Gismo / Luca Footnotes: [1] http://www.pathname.com/fhs/ [2] http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html#PURPOSE18 [3] http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html#PURPOSE6 [4] this package name is just an *example* pgpVSbu9flBGU.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#500430: gconf2: gconfd-2 not shutting down after user's logout
This should not happen, since gconfd-2 does not keep any open file in /home. Could you check what files are open at the time the umount is blocking? Confirmed. The file is ~/.gconfd/saved_state. gconfd-2 keeps it open for about 30 seconds after the session is closed. I have tried, as a workaround, to add a script in runlevels 0 and 6, that executes the first, and reports every proccess accessing the nfs-homes filesystem an then kills it. This is the output: USERPID ACCESS COMMAND /home/cfs: jmcorral 4201 F gconfd-2 With this script killing the gconfd-2 proccess, shutdown sequence proceeds normally: no errors, and the computer powers off.

Bug#498737: (no subject)
You can't find wx-config via packages.debian.org because it is only a (indirect) link to /usr/lib/wx/config/gtk2-unicode-release-2.6: /usr/bin/wx-config - /etc/alternatives/wx-config /etc/alternatives/wx-config - /usr/lib/wx/config/gtk2-unicode-release-2.6 These links are installed by the postinst script of the package libwxgtk2.6-dev So you have to install libwxgtk2.6-dev (or libwxgtk2.8-dev). This statement is also valid for version 2.8 (replace 2.6 by 2.8). Maybe the manpage of wx-config is in the wrong package? Would it be reasonable to add the keyword wx-config to the package description of libwxgtk2.6-dev and libwxgtk2.8-dev? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#500677: live-helper: update lh_binary_rootfs to better support wildcards in file exclusion
Frederic Boiteux wrote: about using -wildcards to mksquashfs to achieve this, but it is used only when LH_CHROOT_BUILD=disabled. ...because if you build chrooted, you can just remove the files, since the 'temporary' chroot inside the chroot to generate the rootfs is trashed right after creating the rootfs image anyway. I use the default value of this parameter, enabled (I don't understand what it stands for) it controls wheter the host systems tools are used to generate the rootfs or not. if you're using the host systems tools, you are possibly tainting the image if you the host system is not the exact same distribution as the target system is. Instead, I've modified a bit the other mecanism set to exclude file in Debian Live filesystem generation to also support wildcards, so that it works wichever LH_CHROOT_BUILD's value. i'll have a look at that in the evening. -- Address:Daniel Baumann, Burgunderstrasse 3, CH-4562 Biberist Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Internet: http://people.panthera-systems.net/~daniel-baumann/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
