What are you basing that statement on??The Hamspots page? You need to take

was auto-generated by the ROS software -- BOGUS spots! The real spots are

IIRC, KISS mode should be used completely under software control. IOW, the
software puts the TNC into KISS mode and takes it out of KISS mode. KISS mode
is not really for manual operation, the software you use in KISS mode
determines what the TNC does and how it does it.

packet at all AFAICR.
Keep your TNC in case you want to run Airmail, but also setup a soundcard
interface to use the NBEMS software and modes.
Also, you might want to look at the Paclink software which will work better
with your TNC than Airmail will.

they're likely to have their ham gear with them while they're on the playa.

$1000 modems are not going to be viable! Not if you want widespread usage.
Stick with open-source non-hardware based solutions.

By your own admission, most psk qso's are short. In addition, the band can

Hi Andy,
Keep in mind that this is all 3rd part hearsay -- supposedly Kantronics
implementation of Pactor I was by agreement with SCS and the part of that

was reneged on by SCS.
I don't know if the agreement was legally
Actually, I suspect that it will be nearly impossible to do. Given the number

Hi Jeff,
AFAIK, the current release version of WSPR does NOT have the QSO capability in
it. What the message was apparently about was the first successful WSPR QSO
using a beta version of the software with that capability.

WSPR is a propogation testing mode. It stands for Weak Signal Propogation
Reporting and is based on MEPT_JT (Manned Experimental Propogation Testing by
Joe Taylor). WSPR.exe is the program used and the object is to use the lowest
power setting you can get away with and to transmit a 2 minute
Rick,
My interests are similar to yours, ie, effective emergency comms, and just
trying out all the different modes.
I have two main issues: 1. Being brand new to digital modes, I find it rather
difficult to tell what mode I'm seeing on the waterfall. I recognize PSK,
RTTY, MFSK16 (now),
are correct.

I'm personally more concerned with the expensive proprietary nature of the

Any comments??
