Re: Need help with opening my Gnucash software

2018-02-02 Thread David T. via gnucash-user
Rick,

It is far easier for the OP simply to click the “Close” button (which continues
starting GnuCash, but without loading the missing file) and then using the
GnuCash File->Open command to locate their file.

This is what I have just put as unsubscribe text.

You are no longer subscribed to the Gnucash-user list. You can no
longer post to the list. If you receive the list mail through Nabble or
Gmane or another reflector, you will have to unsubscribe there so that
you do not receive any more list emails.

I should add that in Windows, if your path doesn't contain the folder
the program is in, you'll have to either add the path or navigate to the
directory where it resides at or include the complete path in your run

Re: GNUCASH Free Accounting Software

2018-02-02 Thread Bob Lehmann
Dear GnuCash Friends:

Thank you! It is good of you to "persevere" for me. I am really
appreciative, of the Gnucash program ... it is quite similar, in several
ways to the old Moneycounts program that I used for years, making it easier
for me to "navigate" iin this program. I have version GnuCash 2.6.15 and
am running it on and ASUS CG8480 computer using Windows 10 Pro 2016 ... It
has an Intel (R) Core (TM) i7-377 OK CPU @ 3.50 Ghz ... the 64 bit
version with 16 Gig RAM memory.

Now, my apologies for not knowing where to route my question and it ending
up in your spam folder! ... When I didn't hear from you earlier in the New
Year, I kept struggling to solve the issue (with the help of the manual,
which I had printed) ... Then one morning, out of the blue, it seemed, I am
unsure even today, what I might have done ... there, my data was all back
and everything was normal ... true, I have not been able to print out any
kind of year-end statements, [probably, because I am a bit afraid to try
again] ... and my account entries are just being added onto the previous
year's entries... At this rate, by 2025 the lists will be pretty long!!!
... So ... I am still in need of further help ...

If you are willing to advise: 1. How do I do a year end statement?
 2. How do I start a New Year's
set of books?
 3. How do I access last years
records from the New Year's set of books, if I need to review something?

Other than this issue, everything has been, SO GOOD, and I thank you, so
much!

Yes, in advance, I Thank you so much for the further help.
Bob

Sounds to me like that was the last file you had opened, then
moved/deleted it, so it  is trying to open that file again, but it can't
find it.

If that is the case, go to a terminal window or a cmd window in Windows,
and enter the following command: gnucash --nofile (might be different in
Apple?)

It should open up a blank copy of GNUCash. Then you can go to file/open
or file/new to open or create a file.

Re: Reconcile problem

2018-02-02 Thread DaveC49
If its any help the reconcile dialog should allow you to change both the date
and the ending balance. The observed behaviour on Gnucash 2.6.18 ( and it
hasn't changed for me since changing from 2.6.16 or from previous versions
over the last 2-3 years) on Linux Mint 18.3 (Ubuntu 16.04) is that if you
change the date, the initial reconcile dialog updates the ending balance to
what the account record indicate it to beat that date. If your external
record shows a different balance at that date then you can enter that
balance and hit enter. It then opens the main reconcile window with the
ending balance set to the value you have just entered.

A mouseover of the icons on the toolbar also brings up the tooltips and
again that behaviour was the same in previous Gnucash versions for the past
4-5 years.

If you are not seeing the tooltips, perhaps it may be a problem/difference
with the library versions installed on your operating system. As far as I
know dpkg works on SUSE so it may be worth doing dpkg -l and comparing the
loaded libraries against the dependency list for 2.6.16. If there is an
older than recommended library, that may be a possible explanantion.

Re: Need help with opening my Gnucash software

2018-02-02 Thread David Carlson
Lorrie,

From the forward slashes I surmise that you are using GnuCash on an Apple
device which has a strange (at least to Linux or Windows users) way to find
files.

That said, I think that once you get to that error you can click on File>
Open > then seach the directory to find your file. I doubt that you
actually named it I'm balance, so I do not know where that came from. The
spell checker renamed your filename in my previous sentence and experience
tells me that it will be impossible to correct.

Re: How to edit and post 'duplicate' customer invoice?

2018-02-02 Thread Adrien Monteleone
If it turns out you can't edit it, then some sort of reversing transaction
should be in order. However, doing that manually might be as equally
problematic. (there is also a 'create reversing transaction' in one of the
menus)

I'd ask Geert, John or someone else to chime in on how best to adjust or
fix this.

Re: GNUCASH Free Accounting Software

2018-02-02 Thread David Carlson
Bob,

Glad to see that you are again able to see the transactions. There is no
single report that shows everything. I am guessing that you got lost in
the process of trying to create a report. I would suggest that you
experiment with the reports, perhaps first trying to do a balance report
for today's date.

While there is a feature available called something like Year End, all it
does is automatically zero out all the income and expense accounts by
transferring them all to Equity. A lot of us don't bother with it as it is
not required for accurate reports anyway.

Then all your history is still there. There is discussion in this list
from time to time about the relative merits of the various ways to handle
year end.

Please never ever directly manipulate invoice related transactions in A/R or
A/P registers!

Gnucash is not designed to be used like that. If you want to duplicate an
invoice, open that invoice and select "Duplicate Invoice" from the menu. That
will do what you are after.

Also if you ticked the "?" to change it into an "I", you have effectively
created a transaction you can not remove any more. You could try to run check
& repair on the register to check whether that will undo it. I have not tried
that myself yet (it's a bit late here).

Transfers not showing

2018-02-02 Thread dplank
I have entries in my checking account for payments made to credit cards.
Usually, when I import the data and then select the credit card account in
the transfer column, it shows up as a payment when I look in the credit card
account. That is not happening for one credit card account. Any suggestions
to get payments from a checking account to show as a transfer to a credit
card account. I am running GNUcash 2.6.5 on a Mac 10.8.2.

Re: How to edit and post 'duplicate' customer invoice?

2018-02-02 Thread Fran_3 via gnucash-user
Running v2.6.19 on Windows 10 PC
When I duplicate an A/R or Sales Transaction there is no option to "Post"
Search -> is Posted -> untick
returns nothing
using an experimentl gnuCash file I created another "duplicate" of an A/R
transaction and did not click on the"?" and then attempted various
Business -> Customer -> Find Invoice
searches... some using the regex dot/wildcard operator ... searching for ID and
by Company Name...
Still, the "duplicated" A/R Sales transaction only appears in those two
registers and can not be found using any search technique I can find... It is
as if the record does not exist...
We really would like to use the "Duplicate" A/R Transaction and/or Sales
Transaction but if we can't post, edit, or find the duplicated entry then we
will have to continue manually entering each transaction from scratch.
Thanks for any additional help as we were really depending on using gnuCash.
Thanks,
Fran3

Hi Fran,

Did you post the duplicated invoice first time around?

I find that the Search -> Is Posted ->  unticked (or set "not true" depending
on the GC version) is often useful...

You may have shot yourself in the foot when you clicked on the ?  If you
click it again does it go back from I to ?  ?

What OS are you using (both on the old and the new machine)?

Michael,

Where did you get Alex's email address? You lost a month in getting a
answer by not using this list in the first place.

As has been posted in the help manual and on the GnuCash website and FAQ
and WIKI, you only need to copy the data file to your thumb drive. There
are some settings in a .gnucash folder that are optional. You jus abandon
the progam and download a fresh copy to your new machine.

Good Luck.

Re: GNUCASH Free Accounting Software

2018-02-02 Thread David Carlson
Mr Lehmann,

You may need to register for the Gnucash Users list to reply if you haven't
already done so.

It is not clear from your brief description what happened. There is a hint
that you are on a Windows OS and if you have been using GnuCash for about a
year and you probably have GnuCash release 2.6.something.

One thing that is not clear is whether you are using a recent release of
Windows (7 or newer) on a reasonably new computer. If that is true, you
should be able to simply close the program and re-open it and everything
will come back.

If you are using a very old computer then it is possible that the system
date is not correct or there is some other problem, and you may need a new
battery or better yet, a new computer.

We look forward to hearing if you have solved your problem or if you can
shed more details.

Re: Themes

2018-02-02 Thread Fross, Michael
Hello Edwin,

One way to remove any custom theme and get back to default is to remove the
.gtkrc-2.0 file in your home directory (which is probably
*C:\users\YourUserName* directory.

To change your theme, run the program (assuming you installed in the
default location):

*c:\program files (x86)\gnucash\bin\gtk2_prefs.exe*

This will update your .gtkrc-2.0 file with the new theme information.
You'll have to restart gnucash to pick up any changes.

I hope that helps.

Michael

Future change in handling the Alpha Vantage API key

2018-02-02 Thread Geert Janssens
Just a heads up that starting with gnucash 2.6.20 and 2.7.4 (beta release to
become 3.0) it will no longer be necessary to edit the gnucash environment
file to get Finance::Quote working with the Alpha Vantage quote source.

Instead there will be a new option under Edit->Preferences->Online Quotes
where you can set the key from within gnucash.

This has two advantages:
1. (most obvious) this should be easier
2. you only have to set the key once. It won't be overwritten during a gnucash
application update.

I have updated the gnucash FAQ [1] accordingly. The only remaining issue is
that gnc-fq-update will not retrieve the key from the gnucash settings. So if
you run gnc-fq-update you will still need to add it to the environment as
described in the FAQ.

On a related note, as of the same future gnucash releases you will also find
the version of Finance::Quote that gnucash discovered on the system in the
Gnucash About dialog.

Regards,

Geert

Fwd: GNUCASH Free Accounting Software

Subject: GNUCASH Free Accounting Software
To: Alex Aycinena

Dear Sir:

I am a senior citizen who used to use Money Counts which was discontinued
years ago but I still ran it on an older windows version for the last few
years. then I found and have been using GNUCASH for just a year now and
have been very pleased with every aspect. Now at the turn of this new
year, I was trying to see if I could print some kind of a Year End
Statement and accidentally and seemingly irreversably
found myself in December 31, 2018 with all of my accounts gone and zeroed
out.

I am wondering if you might have some idea of how I can get all of my data
back. I would so much appreciate it if you would take a bit of time to
respond ... thank you
Bob Lehmann

Re: filter by transfer account?

2018-02-02 Thread David Carlson
I think that the only choice would be to start in the account that you want
to be your base for the filter then do ctrl-F and select the criteria All
Accounts = . So, for example, to
find transfers from Bank1 to Cash you would start in Bank1 and select
Ctrl-F , select All Accounts from under Description, then select Cash from
the account list.

Crude but I just tried it and it works.

filter by transfer account?

2018-02-02 Thread Elmar
Looking at a particular account, I would like to filter by the transfer
account within it, or perhaps just sort by the transfer account, which
would accomplish the same thing.  How can this be done? - Elmar

Hi Fran,

Did you post the duplicated invoice first time around?

I find that the Search -> Is Posted -> unticked (or set "not true" depending
on the GC version) is often useful...

You may have shot yourself in the foot when you clicked on the ? If you
click it again does it go back from I to ? ?

HTH,
Maf.

Thanks but unfortunately it didn't work... here is what I did... Clicked
Business> Customer > Find Invoice > Company Name > matches regex > "." (without
quotes)
Shows the three invoices we have entered (num     01, 02, 03) but
does not show the duplicated invoice. (fyi, we duplicated 01)
I can clearly see the duplicated transaction in A/R and Sales Ledgers but can
not see or get to it any other way.
Thanks for any help!

Try using the invoice search window again. This time change the search to be
“Customer” “matches regex” and use a period “.” (without the quotes) as the
search term. This will show ALL invoices in the system.

Adrien

How to edit and post 'duplicate' customer invoice?

2018-02-02 Thread Fran_3 via gnucash-user
H E L P - hours spent on this so far and no joy:-(
>From the Accounts Receivable or Sales ledger view... (can't remember which)...
- I selected a customer invoice and duplicated it.- it asked for a date and id
number- I entered the date but not the id number as I thought it would auto
increment and populate - it did not- In Accounts receivable view the"Type" was
a question mark '?' so I clicked that and it turned into an 'I' (that's a
capitol 'i' and not an 'L')
The Problem:
- No "Ref" number appears in A/R Ledger or Sales Ledger view- Can not find the
invoice via Business > Customer > Find Invoice- Alternately clicking Reports >
Business > Customer Report shows the original customer invoice but not the
'duplicated' one
The Question:
How can I get to this 'duplicate' invoice to edit it and then post it?
Should I have entered an id number when I originally 'duplicated' the original
record?
If so I would have to guess the next auto increment number right?
Thanks for any help.

Well, Bob Summers' dilemma would be a good place to start.

I can write Python if you have a specific job or jobs that need doing.
My C is good but very rusty, I've never done C++ and I very much doubt
that CORAL 66 or Monk are of much use :)

I've plenty of spare time as I don't work due to long term ill health.

A bit tricky if the OP is on Windows.  Of course I'd consider Python

biased in any way :)

Re: File Format : XML v MySQL / postgres / sqllite

2018-02-02 Thread ebridges
Hi,

Just catching up on the archives and came across this thread.

I began work about a month ago, for my personal use, of a simple easy-to-use
way to quickly get information out of a Gnucash Database:
https://github.com/ebridges/accounting-reports

Right now it's pretty minimal (balance reports, chart of accounts), but
could work as a way to illustrate how to use Piecash. As well, I'm open to
suggestions (and PRs :-)) to improve it!

Cheers,
Ed
