[IMail Forum] Automated Response from rules.ima

2001-12-05 Thread Zul J

Hi there,

I've already created a rule that will delete any
email messages that have an .exe attachment. When I did a test, IMail will
respond with an email that have a subject of "automated response - NUL" and a blank body. How can I key-in a message in
that email ?

Thanks.

Hey, all

I´m really sick and tired (can I say so?) with your saga Imail, declude,
AV, etc. And now, you started (I´m referring to the list, not to Scott)
putting the declude + f-prot forum inside this forum.

Why don´t you create another forum so that you fight till eternity passes
away and another list for declude + f-prot forum ? you can gently tell us
here how can we subscribe that list (the people that uses declude + f-prot)

I think we can have already an idea a little bit better about these
topics...

I'm just wondering why not Ipswitch modify Imail so that we can have another

I don't mean to piss them off but isn't this possible?

Pardon me coz I'm not a programmer or whatsoever but logically it can be

You need to go a little further than just exes. :)

You can forward the message to a mailbox (that you will obviously not
check with Outlook Express) and set an autoresponder from there. For
instance, I forward to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and
autorespond with the message below. I go in every couple days through
web mail and delete all the messages.

Possible Virus Alert:

Hello. This response has been automatically generated to inform you
that an e-mail you sent to a user on our system has been intercepted
due to the fact that it may contain an attachment with, or refer to a
file with an extension of exe, vbs, scr, shs, worm, com, bat, lnk, or
pif. Due to the proliferation of e-mail viruses, this has been set up
to protect our users and our mail system.

If you intended to send this file, you will need to resend it in a
safe format, such as zip, or remove the extension and have the
recipient manually replace the extension.

Our apologies for any inconvenience. If you need to reply to this
e-mail, please use the address below. E-mails to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] will not be answered.

The problem is that it isn't easy to do. In order for the rule to be
useful, it would need to find attachments where ever they were, and not
have false positives (such as someone saying In this HTML tag, you can use
an ID or NAME such as 'name=gone'...).

In order not to have any false positives, the search would have to know
exactly where MIME segments started and ended. This sounds easy, but it
can be very difficult. You also have to decide which protocols to use
(just MIME, or also handle uuencoded files, Binhex, etc.).

The problem actually appears to be an IMail setting on your end:

- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
 (reason: 501 unacceptable mail address)

Although this makes it look like there's a problem with the
[EMAIL PROTECTED] account, it's really something different:

- Transcript of session follows -
... while talking to ppiserv01.peake.com.:
  MAIL From:[EMAIL PROTECTED] SIZE=120
 501 unacceptable mail address

The problem is that IMail isn't accepting the MAIL FROM: address. I'm
guessing it's because of the SIZE=120 that is on there. Looking at the
past few thousands E-mails we've received, I haven't seen any E-mail arrive
with the SIZE= in the MAIL FROM: address. The RCPT TO:'s often have DSN
(delivery status notification) information, but the MAIL FROM:'s don't seem to.

I am currently blocking VBS and SCR extensions using rules.ima.

Does anyone recommend any other extensions to block?

you can pick out the extensions we run in IMGate from these regex's (wrapped)

/^(content.*[[:space:]]+|[[:space:]]*)(filename|name)=.*\.(exe|eml|dll|scr|pif|com|bat|shs|shb|vxd|rm|chm|vbs|ini|cmd|do|hta|reg|lnk|js|jse)/

REJECT

#double extensions, w and w/o double quotes:

/^Content-Disposition: attachment;
filename=.*\.(doc|zip|exe|xls|jpg|gif)\.(scr|pif|bat|com|exe|lnk)$/ REJECT

/^Content-Disposition: attachment;
filename=.*\.(doc|zip|exe|xls|jpg|gif)\.(scr|pif|bat|com|exe|lnk)$/ REJECT

A smarter policy would be default block all extensions, and then before
that, make your pass extensions rule.

Also, I wrote a short little cold fusion script that copies the master .ima
file to all of my various domains. I would be happy to post that here if

That's another advantage of IMGate policies, they are global by default for
all domains, with exceptions per-domain or per-user.

One possible cause is that there was a break in the user's connection during
the attach process. this will a .tmp file in the user's directory. If this
file exists then IMail will not accept a subsequent attachment.

[IMail Forum] Best way to send message that we don't accept certain attachments using IMA rules

2001-12-05 Thread Andy Paluch

Sorry about the long subject line.

I would like to automate sending a message whenever our users get sent an
email with certain forbidden attachments like .v b s and .e x e and others.

I have an IMA rule to look for the presence of the attachments. I then FWD
to a mailbox that has a vacation message on it. This message would tell the
sender that their message was being rejected because of the attachment and
how to get around it by renaming.or whatever.

Problem is a lot of people send their favorite Christmas screensaver or
whatever to everyone on their address list. Our automatic response generates
a lot of pissy emails to us from the senders as to how are they going to
know which of their recipients emails were not received.

Anyone know of a way to deal with this. Any way of identifying who the
recipient is of the mail that being rejected?

Thanks!
Andy

Re: [IMail Forum] rules.ima

2001-12-05 Thread Len Conrad

Len,

Do you send an email to the people whose email was blocked because of an
attachment.

IMGate rejects the msg at the SMTP dialog level, here's the SMTP session
transcript:

Transcript of session follows.

Out: 220 mgw1.MEIway.com - ESMTP - Postfix Relay Hub - ATTN: UCE trespassers
  will be pursued.
  In: EHLO mail.anngel.com

So their mail server should inform the sender of the delivery
failure. The above case is the rejection due to regex filtering of headers
or body+attachment. That particular routine in postfix doesn't allow, now,
for your own text. (you can always modify the source yourself, and
somebody in the IMGate list has done just that)

here's session for RLB reject:

Out: 220 mgw1.MEIway.com - ESMTP - Postfix Relay Hub - ATTN: UCE trespassers

reason: Blackholed by ORDB -- see
http://ordb.org/lookup/?host=202.108.251.80

Is there a way to do that with IMGate/Postfix? I would like to
explain to people why they were being blocked and tell them to rename the
file or whatever.

It's very hard to explain to people your many policy reasons that
trigger rejections. Some people are just unreachable by the written
word. :))

People who are smart enough to understand your explanation are already
smart enough to :

1. re-send the same msg, x times.

2. then send another msg, that gets through.

3. figger something out.

In other parts of IMGate and IMGateAV, you do have the possibility of
entering your own text behind the SMTP response code, or in the virus
detected notice msg.

But in some cases, BOFH is an attitude that is its own reward. :))

Re: [IMail Forum] Attachment rule for .com files

2001-12-05 Thread Mark Pardee

Trouble is, I am not using Declude (though maybe I should be.) I have the
new integrated Symantec Anti-Virus addon. And it is NOT CATCHING ALL THE
VIRUSES! Our IMail rules have bailed us out SEVERAL times, when Symcscan
let the virus pass. (this is happening mostly with the BadTrans virus).

So, I have been trying to come up with a rule for .co!m files as well, as a
backstop to Symcscan. But when I try something like this... it acts
quircky.
B~Name=.{1,9}\.co!m\s

If I use (any word character -- \w) instead of the (any character .) then it
seems to work much better like this:
B~Name=\w{1,9}\.co!m\s

But this, of course, wouldn't catch a file with white space in it.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If you are using Declude for your virus scanning, you can use the BANEXT
option to prevent .com files from being sent (which will catch .com files,
such as someprog.com, but doesn't get false positives such as
www.yahoo.com.lnk).

[IMail Forum] external anti-virus calls...

2001-12-05 Thread Jeff Pajor

Hello all,

I'm sure this has been covered somewhere before, but my searches on
previous posts didn't turn up much. I am using the F-Secure product
and trying to do external calls to the command line scanner when an
email comes in. Following the procedure described here
http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IM-2517-DM01.htm
is very little use, it gives me an error in the log file. Does the
external scanning require a batch file or something to fully process
the file? Any help would be appreciated. I called support and they
told me to put the command line scanners' complete path in the
SendName registry as described in the article and said that would
work...

Thank you,
Jeff

[IMail Forum] Horrible Lesson about Spamming

2001-12-05 Thread Dale Chavez

This might be construed as slighly off-topic and if so, my apology.

I discovered yesterday that we couldn't send email to one of our clients
(very large client) and I called Ipswitch support (they were very
helpful BTW) to try and resolve the problem. Well, about 2 minutes into
troubleshooting we discovered that our email was being rejected by our
client's servers because our domain name ended up in a Spam abuse
database!? Sure enough, the SMTP Security options setting was set to
allow everyone to relay mail. Don't recall for the life of me how or
when it got set to this option, but nonetheless, there it was.

I of course fixed that problem, and now I needed to find out where these
databases exist (the support guy couldn't help me here). After some
searching I found a site (http://mail-abuse.org/referred.html) that
spells out exactly what I needed to do to verify that our domain was in
the database(s) (it was) and how to request it be removed (I did). This
is extremely frustrating and embarrasing because I'm (usually) on top of
things like this, but this fell through the cracks obviously. Now I
have to wait for our client to update their database (could take 24-48
hours I'm told) so we can send mail again. Live and learn.

After all that, I *do* have a question. How can I tell by looking at my
log file that my server was indeed used for relay spamming? The only
other thing we can think of is that we sent unsolicited email to our
current and former clients asking if they'd like to subscribe to our
company newsletter. Perhaps we really upset someone who reported us.
Yes, we thought about the issue and risk of sending unsolicited email to
current/former clients, but obviously not *all* the risks.

Regards,
Dale

[IMail Forum] Filtering attachments/rules

2001-12-05 Thread Marc Archibald

I've been trying to set up rules to stop or at least filter/monitor email
that has double extensions. For example the recent W32Badtrans virus which
has the double extension with either .scr or .pif. and the W32.Goner.1@mm

How would I set up rules to scan the email body for attachments with double
extensions (e.g. file_name.doc.scr) and if it finds a match either Kill
it or send someplace where it can be viewed? I've tried what the KB
instructed but couldn't get it to work correctly.
This is what I had in the rules

You need to go a little further than just exes. :)

You can forward the message to a mailbox (that you will obviously not
check with Outlook Express) and set an autoresponder from there. For
instance, I forward to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and
autorespond with the message below. I go in every couple days through
web mail and delete all the messages.

pif. Due to the proliferation of e-mail viruses, this has been set up
to protect our users and our mail system.

If you intended to send this file, you will need to resend it in a
safe format, such as zip, or remove the extension and have the
recipient manually replace the extension.

Nearly all software vendors are looking for ways to manage the support

just leading the way to next step: abandoning the support list as well.

Ipswitch employees used to take part in the list quite a bit. I even
received a call from the president of the company one time after posting a
negative response to a licensing change. The main problem with Ipswitch
is
they just don't listen to their customers anymore. They must have a few
really big customers who don't mind the price and provide their own
support.

I have used Imail since v3.0 and boy have things changed since then. I
 guess success spoiled them.

Re: [IMail Forum] external anti-virus calls...

2001-12-05 Thread Jerry Murdock

At minimum you would need a program(or batch file)to file to run the scanner,
determine if the message is infected, and then call smtp32.

There are a lot of issues with this. Does the scanner handle MIME encoded
files well, etc.

I looked at doing thins a while back, and decided for $495, Declude was the
easier solution. It simply would have taken a lot more than 5 hours to
implement and test.

Subject: [IMail Forum] external anti-virus calls...

 Hello all,

I'm sure this has been covered somewhere before, but my searches on
previous posts didn't turn up much. I am using the F-Secure product
and trying to do external calls to the command line scanner when an
email comes in. Following the procedure described here
http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IM-2517-DM01.htm
is very little use, it gives me an error in the log file. Does the
external scanning require a batch file or something to fully process
the file? Any help would be appreciated. I called support and they
told me to put the command line scanners' complete path in the
SendName registry as described in the article and said that would
 work...

 Thank you,
 Jeff

NO. Imail doesn't work on the POP level for transferring mail. You would

My customer is still getting this error message. Does anyone have any
suggestions.

That almost always means that a mail loop is occurring. You can check your
logs to see when the E-mail came in, and any copies that were
forwarded. For example, if the user has an AOL account forward to an
account on your server, which forwards back to the AOL account...

You can set up IMail to receive mail on a different port -- go to
http://support.ipswitch.com and search for port and one of the top
results will explain how to do it.

IMail can't send mail to a different port, since that shouldn't be
necessary -- all mail servers that accept mail from the real world (not
just from a local server) will use port 25 to receive mail.

Are you using Outlook? I know from experience how easy it is to get
duplicates on the client-side, if you fail to check the and stop
processing more rules option as the final rule in your filter setups.
Take a look at the message id in the headers, to see if they are indeed

I have the rule from Ipswitch's site that blocks .vbs and .scr

latter is the case, how well does it work? I may have a situation where
gane.scr has come through, and this would help in determining one angle

Ipswitch
is
they just don't listen to their customers anymore. They must have a
few
really big customers who don't mind the price and provide their own

I have used Imail since v3.0 and boy have things changed since then.
I

Re: [IMail Forum] Imail and Declude - Rules.ima and Declude?

2001-12-05 Thread R. Scott Perry

I have the rule from Ipswitch's site that blocks .vbs and .scr
attachments. What happens when declude is in the loop? Does it nullify
the rules? Or, does Imail process the rule first, so declude never sees
it? Or does declude pass it then Imail process the rules?

Declude will process the mail before the rules -- so if Declude catches a
virus, or is set to block .VBS and .SCR files, Declude will block the
E-mail before the rules take effect.

You can set up IMail to receive mail on a different port -- go to
http://support.ipswitch.com
and search for port and one of the top results will explain how to do it.
IMail can't send mail to a different port, since that shouldn't be necessary -- all mail servers that accept mail from the real world (not just from a local server) will use port 25 to receive mail.

[IMail Forum] Parsing Email Content

Hi Listers,

Can anyone guide me in the right direction?

How would I parse and load an email IMAIL (IDX + MDX) file into a

I've seen.

Is there a utility that does this? The requirement is to automatically
parse in a structure way.

RE: [IMail Forum] How can I change Template to send Messages with Priority

2001-12-05 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 Hi People
I am newer in this fórum, my name is Wagner, I work on a
website and I am making the the webmail of my Imail Server 7.04
 for Windows NT.

Hi Wagner.

I am having some troubles when I try to change the templates:

Join the club. See links in my sig when you're ready to outsource your
template modifications. :)

1 - How can I put in the sendmail.htm the box to set the
message priority and a registered message?

You can't. IMail's web messaging service isn't set up to take those
options, and only it could set the headers of the message appropriately.
To accomplish this, you'd need to design a whole new message composition
system using something other than IMail's web messaging service.

2 - How can I remove the words: (Binary Atachment) that cames
beside of the link to Atached File?

You can't. Those words come from the server, and there's no way to alter
them with the templates.

3 - Same email came truncated with estrange caracters, and in
another emails when I click on the link of the atached File it
cames the message: No Atached File or An error occurred in
Web Messaging. Error Code: 80020009 Contact your system
administrator. How can I solve this problem

There are many known problems with IMail's webmail attachment handling,
due primarily to the myriad of variables at play (MIME types, encoding
methods, browser settings, spaces in filenames, etc. etc.). Sending Zipped
filesets is the safest, most reliable attachment method. If you find a
reproducable method of creating a file attachment error, send the detailed
report to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [IMail Forum] external anti-virus calls...

2001-12-05 Thread R. Scott Perry

I'm sure this has been covered somewhere before, but my searches on
previous posts didn't turn up much. I am using the F-Secure product
and trying to do external calls to the command line scanner when an
email comes in. Following the procedure described here
http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IM-2517-DM01.htm
is very little use, it gives me an error in the log file. Does the
external scanning require a batch file or something to fully process
the file? Any help would be appreciated. I called support and they
told me to put the command line scanners' complete path in the
SendName registry as described in the article and said that would
work...

Whoever told you that was mistaken. Putting a virus scanner into the
SendName registry entry will stop all E-mail from going through your server!

In order to use that registry entry, you need a program (like Declude) that
will take care of locking the appropriate files, decoding MIME segments,
calling the scanner, calling the SMTP32.EXE process, etc.

Why not use a POP control (there are a zillion of them for DLL and

If you were to parse the mailbox as ASCII, you have to be aware of

Re: Re[2]: [IMail Forum] Imail, Declude, AV

2001-12-05 Thread NetQuick Mail Administrator

I think this forum is a great resource and I would like to point out
that despite whatever opinions have been expressed here Ipswitch has not, to
my knowledge, censored any of them. Imail as a product has it's fine
points, however it is still a developing product, under (I hope) constant
improvement. As long as they continue to make improvements to it and it
still provides a good value for the dollar my company will continue to use
it. Customer support techs will always be a bone of contention for most
companies. The salaries rarely attract the best of breed and on the rare
occasion it does, these individuals usually move up (rather quickly I might
add) the corporate ladder and out of the direct customer support arena. I
think we should all realize this is common to most companies, as the real
profits are in the sales and not in the after sales support. It is a bit of
a sad commentary on the industry as a whole. I could name a number of other
software/hardware venders who's customer base could benefit immensely if
only they had a forum half as useful as this one.

Well enough maudlin thinking and back to fixing what ever broke, blue
screened or whatever in the time it took you to read this.

Has anyone had success installing Norton Anti-Virus for Gateways and Imail
on the same box? Is this even possible considering that Imail can only be
configured to send and receive SMTP traffic on a single port?

You can set up IMail to receive mail on a different port -- go to
http://support.ipswitch.com and search for port and one of the top
results will explain how to do it.

IMail can't send mail to a different port, since that shouldn't be
necessary -- all mail servers that accept mail from the real world (not
just from a local server) will use port 25 to receive mail.

It is incorrect, and does solve your problem.

With that registry entry, IMail will listen on port 1125, but send on port
25 (even though the KB article says otherwise).

It seems that I would need to set NAV to listen on 25 and send on
1125, and Imail to listen on 1125 and send on 25.

That's correct.

smtp servers typically ask the OS for an available tcp port above 1023 and
send on whatever that is.

Configure NAV listen on port 25 to receive MX incoming, and send to

Tell IMail to listen to the port NAV is sending to, eg, 10025. ying meets
yang, let's roll.

Have tried RTFM for NAV?

I setup McAfee Webmail with another mail server and it works fine.

Just follow the directions and all will be OK.

Imail will send and receive on Port 1125.

NAV will listen on Port 25 and 1125, check for viruses and then send out on
Port 1125 for local addresses (and of course IMail picks them up) and
Port 25 for non-local.

The power of money: If they do, tell them you don't think it's right, and
if they don't let you send .exe's, then switch to another provider.

I am not an imail owner, but rather a domain administrator at an imail

bothers me that hosts would block particular files as attachments. This
should be on the end user's head, it is not the host's responsibility or
right to block any of my incoming files. I might need and want them.

That depends on who runs the mail server. A business that has a mail
server for their employees to send/receive mail with should (in my opinion
at least) have the right to block all .SCR and .PIF files, if they feel
that it will be safer not to accept them.

For an ISP, however, it's a very different story.

One could also argue that they have no right to block spam. After all, how
are my employees going to find out how to visit web sites involving doing
strange things with animals? (In spite of the serious nature of my initial
thoughts, I am not without a sense of humor.)

G There are always a few people who would prefer to receive spam and not
have their mail scanned at all (although I haven't heard of anyone who
didn't want their mail scanned for viruses).

[IMail Forum] Comparison of IMail, MDaemon and Merak

2001-12-05 Thread Brian G. Stephen

I was ready to buy
IMail (with the AntiVirus add-on and Support Subscription) until I recently
subscribed to this list. In the last couple of days, I have read
about:
- Problems with
IMail Version 7being very buggy.
- Problems with
IPSwitch Technical Support (this was one of the BIG reasons that I had chosen to
go IMail).
- Excessive cost of
Anti-Virus option.
- Acusations of
unprofessional conduct by IPSwitch.

I have only been on
the list for 2 days!!! The only good thing I have observed, is that
IPSwitch seems confident enough about their product to allow a loosely moderated
discussion group like this to exist.

Obviously, I am now
rethinking which product to buy. MDaemon (new version, now in beta) will
have their Web-Based Calander ready within a month, along with "full" LDAP entry
integration (also has inexpensive anti-virus add-on). Merak will have LDAP
available in 2 months (will work with 3rd party anti-virus add-on). Both
have IMAP4 and Web Access.

I need IMAP4, Web
Accessand access to a Global Address book (LDAP or?). Shared
Web-Based Calender (low end group-ware) would also be nice, but not
critical. Can anyone provide me some input (or firsthand
experience), comparing features, of IMail / MDaemon / Merak assuming price is
not an issue?

Thanks in
advance,

Brian
S.

I'd suggest you try convincing them to send just straight ZIP files. It
would be safer for all concerned. After all you risk is their risk.

Ditto that.

Re: [IMail Forum] Comparison of IMail, MDaemon and Merak

2001-12-05 Thread Sheldon Koehler

I have only been on the list for 2 days!!! The only good thing I have
observed, is that IPSwitch seems confident enough about their product to
allow a loosely moderated discussion group like this to exist.

Brian,

As a user of Imail for over 5 years and using it in an ISP environment, I
would strongly recommend Imail. And I have been vocal lately about some of
the problems I perceive with Ipswitch. You mentioned this list and this list
is one of the strongest reasons to purchase Imail!

Imail has one of the largest installed email server bases on the Internet.
And if memory serves me correctly, Imail is number one in the pay for
software mail server products. Sendmail is number one, but it is a free
program.

You see a very vocal minority on this list. Good and bad, this is just a
small drop in the Imail installed base. For us, Imail has been a very stable
product. I can sleep at night and not worry if my mail server is going to
crash on me (although we run WhatsUp Gold and I carry a pager...).

Personally, the only real reason I have not upgraded to Imail version 7 is I
cannot convince my partners to spend the money on Killer Webmail Templates
(yet). And I refuse to go through and edit all of the web templates again!

BUT, Ipswitch did drop the ball on version 7 and way too many bugs were
present in the first releases. Some people are still having issues, but
there are many that will say that version 7 is working fine for them.

My main complaint with Ipswitch's support is that they have too many
underlings and only 1 or 2 chiefs. The underlings know less than many of the
people on this list and trying to get your problem escalated to a tech with
more than 2 brain cells touching is a trial in patience to say the least.
Just do not use email support at all! Make a phone call and if the person
you talk to cannot fix the problem, demand to talk to his boss.

I would recommend lurking on this list for a bit longer. You will find as
many saints as jerks hang out here and they all have badges in plain sight!

And to answer a yet not asked question, we are using Scott's Declude for our
virus scanning and Len's IMGate for Spam filtering. Ron's Killer Webmail is
my next project. We do have a current support contract for all 3 of our
Ipswitch products (Imail unlimited, WhatsUp Gold and WS-FTP 10 pack site
license). Our contract does not end until May 2002, but at this time I plan
on renewing. (Disclaimer: May 2002 may bring a different story!).

FWIW,
Sheldon
