I think having a comfortable "beater grade" bike that you don't have to
worry about is an excellent idea. You just have to resist the temptation to
swap parts and upgrade! I've never been able to. ;)

Some data points for you: sold a f/f/hs when I lived in the bay area, a

Got a 61 cm complete bike locally for $1500 (Rich wheels, ultegra brakes,

I’ll throw this out there as a wild assertion without much support.
The Rivendell Bombadil exhibits the most perfect fork bends of any Rivendell
model ever. Nobody has a Rivendell with a better looking bend than Bombadil
owners. Rivendells are consistently “good”. Bombadils are perfect.

78mm drop on the Redwood. Works fine with 47mm tires. Likely fine with 42mm

The Clem certainly is the most versatile and I'd be more inclined to load
up this one for camping trips vs the Redwood. I have 2.1" Thunderburts

I don't like cushion or slippery grips, but I do like thicker grips than
cotton alone. So I've settled for the past few years on a layer of cotton
with a layer of leather. So far, very happy.

I have a really good 700c Wheelset that has been hanging up and collecting
dust for a long time.. These were on my Ram, circa 2000 for a couple of
years before being replaced with White Hubs and a couple of more spokes.

there are still nice olde tyme wheel-magnet-counting cycling computers
available -- to my eye anyway. My most recent cyclocomputer purchase was a
Cateye Strada Slim which I like better than any other traditional cycling
Cyclemeter for smartphones, the free version, and turn off update
notifications. Good enough for me!
Elapsed time, mph, average, odometer, cumulative miles -- week, month, year
-- cumulative total and by bike; average speed; elevation gain and loss;

The bike in the Craigslist ad is the size Rivendell called 52cm. I rode a 56
which had a 60.5cm top tube and an 85cm standover with max tires.
