protocol you were / are using in pidgin.
Deleting the program and starting over has nothing to do with your problem.

Isn't that a function of the IM server, not the client software? I've
had that come up in Yahoo a number of times - when I accidentally
copy and paste HTML junk. If I paste the same text into Windows
Notepad (which gets rid of all the HTML), and then copy / paste, it
goes through.
