I am not sure to what you refer to below, but it could be the tax issue.

 In 1995, after the Oklahoma City bombing, security at the borders was greatly
increased.  Rich was trying to cross the border and was stopped and questioned
about his music equipment.  He had tickets on him because he was on his way to
NY and the border patrol deduced that he was performing in the US without paying
taxes... and Rich ended up not being allowed (or maybe just not wanting to)
return to the states until it was straightened out.  This had NOTHING to do with
anything but the IRS and the laws here.

Well I am not 100% sure of this but I remember reading somewhere about how
Richie *did* go to Detroit to play sometime in 95-96, had a really rough time
at this dance party- and vowed never to go back there again. Those who have
been on the 313 around that time will remember the fiasco because it is in
the archives somewhere - but the site for it is currently down due to
reconstruction and there are too many messages to sort through.
