Carole Marvin being white, actually, was neither here nor there. That's a whole long crazy story, which you've probably heard most of. It started out the first year she was content to have Carl be Artistic director, and she was content to leverage her experience with the Jazz Festival to help put something together on the Plaza. At some point, though, she kind of lost the plot, and fired Craig, I guess because she felt like the festival was 'hers.' Unfortunately she'd fired a massively popular figure locally and internationally, and came off looking pretty Lady Macbeth. She put on the festival in 2002 with a group of people who traditionally did not get along with the 'Detroit Inner Circle' so well, and ... well I'm sure you can read up on it.
She still owns the trademark on DEMF as far as I know. I feel kind of sorry for her because she went from hero to villain in Detroit, and I don't know if she ever quite figured out why. You should try and talk to Alan Oldham some time. He lives in Chicago now. Whatever you hear in Detroit he's the contrarian. He's a great guy, but whatever someone else in Detroit tells you is white, he'll tell you it's black.
