Rob beat me to the link but there is tons of Detroit jazzsters, and it seemed to be an important area. At times there was quite a community vibe going on, from what I can tell. The Detroit jazz scene of the early 60s, for example, seems SO tight knit: the Jones brothers, Donald Byrd, Joe Henderson, Kenny Burrell etc. When an artist was from Detroit it really seemed more important to them than Chicago did, say, to a Chicago artist. Or so it seems to me. On the back of "Mode For Joe" for example, Joe Henderson's just saying, "He's a Detroit cat" like some badge of pride. Which is cool. Also there's all the Tribe stuff which is proto-UR/Submerge in it's DiY ethos.
Check out the IPL link Rob sent because that's a great site.
