God, I hate that sort of thing... I remember some interview where Juan
Atkins said he didn't quite understand how people could be into techno and
not like sci-fi. It's slightly weird to me that people who like sci-fi tend
to get drawn into that "filk" sort of scene! I once asked a bunch of people
who like Iain M Banks' Culture novels what music they'd use as a soundtrack
if the novels (which always seemed very "techno" to me) were produced as
films, and people were suggesting Travis, Radiohead, and stuff like that.

So I'd be cheeky and say that "filk" isn't the musical heritage of science
fiction, but instead the musical heritage of science fiction *fans*... which
I often like to think of as two separate things :)
