I'm really surprised that people pin basically abstract music down to
such an obvious sad/happy association.

I personally listen to Mahler's 4th Symphony when it snows, John
Coltrane or dub reggae when it rains, hard techno when it is sunny, and
deep house/nu-jazz/broken beat/jazzy old skool hiphop when cute females
are visiting. Detroit techno fits in with about anything though, in my
opinion. It's not THAT melancholy, it's actually rather uplifting in my
opinion, just in a more realistic way, rather than a
fake/cheesy/corporate-manufactured/there-are-no-problems-in-the-world
way.

have a bearing on things too.
