>Photek - all his stuff on Photek Productions and Science but
especially check UFO

UFO must be one of the best dance tracks ever. eerie, cinematic,
and dark, but not in that irritating way that drrum and bass is
now, but more like an emotional darkness. and photek's beats are
just killer. he's a total inspiration to me. i remember reading in
like 1996 that he spend about 3 weeks on just the drums for each
track. wild.

>4-Hero - the earlier you go the better - check Cooking Up Your
Brain 12" Parallel Universe LP; their stuff as Tom and Jerry is
good too though difficult to find.... Mr Kirk's Nightmare

i dont know, i think 4 hero have been pretty consistantly the
bomb. they had no real down periods. the older hardcore stuff was
great, the tom and jerry stuff is some of the best, but their new
stuff though not exactly drum and bass related is also fabulous.
theyre heroes of mine for sure.

>Goldie/Metalheadz - Terminator is a massive tune - think it has
just been reissued; Inner City Life is great too and the Timeless
LP. Goldie went down hill in a big way after that...

i have to disagree with this as well. while his second LP wasnt
anywhere near as good as timeless, any track or rmx by Rufige Cru
is pretty much essential. the liquid fingers rmx is totally larry
heard making a jungle tune, that "beachdrifta" track has one of
the best string lines ever, totally detroit styled emotional dance
music. and "the shadow" which he did in 97 with rob playford is
another dark cinematic emotional masterpiece. i also cant say
enough about goldie. he is THE MAN.

>Shy FX - most stuff on Ebony and SOUR is brilliant - Original
Nuttah with UK Apachi has the maddest fast rapping on it you ever
heard - was recently reissued; Gangsta Kid probably the next one
I'd pick out as a recommendation (also Gangsta Kid II!). Also
check Bambaataa, Cry (T-Power remix)....

id definitely say that shy has no 313 relevance, but he's still
really good. he's churned out enough anthems without putting out
much if any filler material. its crazy.

>Omni Trio - Renegade Snares is their big tune - just reissued but
don't think it has the original mix on it...

the high contrast mix is very good though. it maintains so much of
the original that its impossible to not like it. omni trio for me
is the most consistantly detroit drum and bass artist.

>Alex Reece - Pulp Friction - classic tune, gets used quite a lot
on TV these days for some reason! Alex remixed Model 500 tune on
R&S though I think it was the Frank de Wulf mix I preferred; also
his remix of Tricky's Brand New Your Retro...

alex reese is another very techno influenced cat. some of the
fallen angels stuff from 99-00 was like techno with a fast beat.

>Jonny L - Piper Grooverider remix

jonny l's recent stuff is actually structured just like a harder
more loop based techno track. lots of loops and no breakdowns, the
basslines even sound like some harder euro techno. good stuff
though, very funky.

>Prizna - Fire - this one got reissued a while back and is a on
the same lines as Original Nuttah

except much much much much better. "fire" and "the arsonist" are 2
of the best ragga tunes ever, ive never seen them get played
without being rewound.

>Origin Unknown - Valley of the Shadows - just reissued - it tends
to appear for a couple of weeks each year and then vanish;
sometimes known as Long Dark Tunnel...

someone mentioned pfm's "cruising detroit" on the "storm from the
east" comp. thats the tune. both storm from the east comps are
good. i dare anyone who doesnt like jungle to listen to photek's
rmx of the ez rollers' "believe" (on SFTE 1) and try to say that
jungle isnt a beautiful emotional expressive form of dance music.
