I think she's an acquired taste, same with Yoko Ono (love Francois K's remix
of Walking On Thin Ice, I might add!!!), Kate Bush and Lene Lovich. It's the
nature of the voice.
When Mary J Blige surfaced people didn't like her voice (it's a little
sharp) but that blunted (or textural) quality defined hip-hop soul, and
people connected with the emotion, and she's endured for a decade, before
that people said Anita Baker couldn't sing and, ridicuously Aretha had
critics! People hated the overvocalising of Mariah and Whitney but their
styles defined a moment too.
I've always liked Bjork's voice but I am sure it's like mushrooms/oysters,
etc, you like it or you don't.
Do you recall the track? I am curious now. ;)
