Not quite near downtown, but on Michigan ave and The Southfield freeway there's Al-Berdouni's(sp) for excellent Arabic food and Rosa's Mexican Resturant on the same block. I used to work at a car audio shop that was there years ago and we ate there daily.
Plus there's always American Coney Island on Lafayette/Michigan ave/Woodward right downtown.
