i think it's easiest to describe detroit techno if you describe the prototype records and dont worry about how it's evolved and branched off over the years. ie strings (!), soulfulness, depth, experimentation, futurism etc etc. you dont have to worry about giving a picture perfect description. thats what people have ears for. and like any other genre of music you need a bit of context to get the point across. somebody who is unfamiliar with dance music isnt going to be immediately open to the nuances, they will need some reference points. screw it, just give them a copy of techno rebels and a tape/cd. that's what i've done more than once.
