i think what is confusing this discussion is that on one hand we're talking about digital djs and the other digital live acts.

typically a live act has a 'set' that they perform. so a band is not that much different to a live laptop performer in that they are both prescriptive in the way the music is presented.

a dj on the other hand should (i say 'should' as not all djs are like this) be responding to the reaction on the dancefloor and tailoring the music played accordingly as well as being prescriptive (it's the interaction that makes djing interesting). someone who knows what they are doing with, say, Ableton Live plays literally live with the software and the only precooked thing is perhaps the "dj's" own edits or reworks.
