the mailman delivers again. :)
don't wanna be no yussel here, but since *a* debate is going on...
about the commercial... who cares.
the real question is are MA tracks any good?
first i have to say this: i bought MA#1 when it came out, 2 copies (sold
one later for 50euros hehe). i liked and played it a lot and still do so
today. i still buy all their records (never bought any of the other
neo-disco-dub-boogie stuff or any dutch neo-italo for that matter, seems
pointless to me). if it wouldn't have been for theo parrish a bit
earlier i guess it would have been MA to get me interested in disco,
italo, 80s boogie, etc (to get me interested in things other than techno
again!) and to open up a whole new world for me. one could even say that
MA started a new (retro) genre all by themselfs. plus certain aspects of
MA tracks certainly are original, the pairing of disco sensibilities
with (post) detroit moodyness, the production, some sort of melodic
minimalism, the pairing of the "laidbackness" of deep house with again
disco-boogie elements ... huge props are due.
but today i'm not as naive anymore as i was in 1999. today i can see
that MA's style, the sounds, the arrangements, the ideas are *old*.
sometimes (most of the times?) the ideas are lifted straight from old
tunes! today i rather hear some weak song from the original era than a
MA track, at least you can be sure that the original track has some
weirdness in it (or something i at least perceive as strange), while the
MA track is nicely debugged. not all music has to live up to the high
standards of originality, most of the times it's enough that the tune is
a good tune and basta (and i own many many good tunes), but i really
love and respect songs or tracks that are good (ie which i plainly like)
*and* which are new, unheard of, pushing boundaries (or i which at least
perceive as such). morgan geists's "today's r&b" tracks fall in this
category imo.
i'm awfully bad at following up my statements. please forgive my if
there should be replies to my comment and i maybe won't respond to them.
